To think I can still get away with wearing short shorts?

I’m 23 and a UK size 10 with an 18 month old dd. My legs aren’t particularly toned but I don’t think they’re completely awful! I was looking at clothes for the summer earlier (when we can finally go out!) and I came across a pair of pink shorts that I really liked the look of. I asked my dp what he thought and he said perhaps it would be best to wear trousers or 3/4 lengths now that I am a mum and that my legs aren’t completely toned! I was really annoyed! I had suggested wearing them with a white jumper/ long sleeved t-shirt so it’s not like I would be showing my stomach. When I asked him why he said that he said that whilst I am still youngish I need to dress appropriately now that I have a child. It’s taken me ages after having my dd to feel comfortable within myself and I just feel upset now. Aibu to think that I can still wear shorts?

This is not about the length of your shorts. It is about a man that feels threatened by you and is trying to exert power over you.
Wear your shorts. He will probably also tell you that you need to cut your hair.
Be ready. Knowledge is power.

I don’t think the issue is the clothes. It’s why he feels the need to comment. Bold colours FFS??? Who comments on the wife’s choice of colour in clothes?
If he isn’t controlling in other ways and putting the best possible spin on it maybe you ask him ‘how do I look?’ and he takes it very literally and thinks he should give a critique. Some people, especially men, don’t understand these types of questions.
Sit him down and explain really clearly that when his is critical of what you wear it harms your self esteem and also it’s non of his business. If you say ‘how do I look?’ the response should be ‘stunning’.
How does he dress OP?

Wear them. What an idiot. Is he dressing differently now he's a dad??
I'm 42 and my legs are fatter than yours, I still wear shortish shorts.

I'm 60 with not great legs, and if I want to wear shorts I wear shorts! Wear what you like, your DP doesn't get to tell you how to dress.

Wear the shorts!

I'm 45 and wear them, I have great legs with failing eyesight Wink

I'm 60 and this thread has inspired me to put my shorts on today!

If I was 23 again instead of turning 40 I'd wear a thong out never mind shorts.Wear the shorts!

ColourMyDreams · 07/04/2020 11:41

I would wear them every day of the week with a smirk for the next six months.
No one gets to tell you what to wear or how to wear it.

I'm 53. I have great legs too (that's how I got my username) — and, with surgically corrected vision, there's nothing wrong with my eyesight Grin

Go ahead and rock the shorts, OP!

Wear what you like. In the meantime buy him some tweed trousers a brown cable knit zip up cardi, -pref with leatherette elbow patches, flat cap and pipe to wear now he’s a dad
