To think I can still get away with wearing short shorts?

I’m 23 and a UK size 10 with an 18 month old dd. My legs aren’t particularly toned but I don’t think they’re completely awful! I was looking at clothes for the summer earlier (when we can finally go out!) and I came across a pair of pink shorts that I really liked the look of. I asked my dp what he thought and he said perhaps it would be best to wear trousers or 3/4 lengths now that I am a mum and that my legs aren’t completely toned! I was really annoyed! I had suggested wearing them with a white jumper/ long sleeved t-shirt so it’s not like I would be showing my stomach. When I asked him why he said that he said that whilst I am still youngish I need to dress appropriately now that I have a child. It’s taken me ages after having my dd to feel comfortable within myself and I just feel upset now. Aibu to think that I can still wear shorts?

This is even worse, mid thigh isn't short, I'm pretty sure you can see my butt / thigh crease in my beach shorts.
Pack his bags, he's only going to get worse and you're so young you don't need this for the rest of your life. He will wear you down and make you miserable with no self esteem or self worth.

Queenoftheashes · 28/03/2020 13:21

Wtf how does he dare ? My bf’s life wouldn’t be worth living if he said shit like that to me! You need to start criticising him hard and see how he likes it

incognitomum · 28/03/2020 13:22

@crosspelican pmsl Grin

Fuck him op! ( or rather don't) I'm 52 this year and wear shorts.

I'd be wearing them now with tights to annoy him.

Heatherjayne1972 · 28/03/2020 13:22

It’s a free country
Whether you’re thin fat or anything else - Wear whatever you like

Bet he’s no Adonis

Thymelord · 28/03/2020 13:23

He will only get worse, that is guaranteed. You're 23, it is so young (and I'm not being patronising). Don't waste the best years of your life on some inadequate little prick who thinks he can tell you what to wear. I implore you not to.

chatterbugmegastar · 28/03/2020 13:23

What a bellend he is. But why ask him if you know he's a bellend? His opinion is permanently irrelevant

Ellaandtoddler · 28/03/2020 13:25

@PianoTuner567 before I had my daughter he always complimented how i dressed. I’m back at work full time and wear a uniform for work so he’s ok with that. If I go out with friends he doesn’t like me to wear dresses that are too short or bold in colour

I don't like shorts that are so short that the wearer's bum cheeks hang out the bottom. But I don't think that people should wear 'age appropriate ' clothes. I think they should wear what they like. I remember my mum telling me that when women get to a certain age they should have their hair cut short. Weird.

Washyourhandsyoufilthyanimal · 28/03/2020 13:26

You’re not “youngish” you are very young still! I’m in my 30s I have kids and still wear short shorts. Don’t dress for anyone but yourself. He’s controlling.

RingaRosie · 28/03/2020 13:26

Has your body changed a bit since having the baby? (of course it has!) Is that why he commenting on your appearance? Did he used to do it before?
It’s really hurtful behaviour. Try commenting on his looks / clothing / weight and see how he reacts. He might get a taste of his own medicine.

TheBlueStocking · 28/03/2020 13:27

Jesus, I'm most of the way to forty and I still wear short shorts.

Manda34 · 28/03/2020 13:27

I'm 32, 2 kids, slim but have a few varicose veins from pregnancy that I'm saving up to fix. I wear shorts fgs!

RingaRosie · 28/03/2020 13:27

Just read your last update, OP. That’s what I was thinking...

BillysMyBunny · 28/03/2020 13:29

YABU to want to wear shorts with long sleeves. This is just such a bizarre look to me - if it’s cold enough for sleeves how can it be warm enough for shorts?

Merename · 28/03/2020 13:29

Are there other aspects of your life that he tries to control in this way, op?

comingintomyown · 28/03/2020 13:32

At 23 he said you are youngish ? Sorry he sounds controlling and awful but you are maybe too young to realise what other messages this gives and what may well come further down the line

Thymelord · 28/03/2020 13:32

The next thing will be that he stops you going out with your friends. Are you OK with that? If not, DITCH HIM. You get one shot at life, this is it.

Nearlyalmost50 · 28/03/2020 13:32

He sounds controlling, what happens if you wear a dress that is short or colourful, or have you stopped doing that as he controls it?

Why would he put you down, make you feel worse, try to put you off looking attractive?

MurrayTheMonk · 28/03/2020 13:33

Wear what you like. For heavens sake.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 28/03/2020 13:33

I'm 50ish and wear a bikini.

He gets to choose what he wears, not what you wear.

Has he changed his wardrobe since becoming a dad?

Thought not..Confused

CountFosco · 28/03/2020 13:34

I'm old enough to be your mother and have 3DC. I wear shorts above my mid-thigh. MIL is in her 80s and wears shorts above her mid thigh, she looks fab in them. Keep the shorts if you love them.

jackstini · 28/03/2020 13:37

I'm 47, mum of 2 and still wear shorts if it's hot

You should wear whatever you love and feel comfortable in - it is absolutely nothing to do with your dp!

Buy the shorts - in every colour they come in Grin

Pickupapenguinnnn · 28/03/2020 13:38

He sounds very controlling. I'd seriously consider leaving him. Soon he'll be telling you not to leave the house and you'll end up looking back wondering why you wasted your youth on an abusive twat.

JKScot4 · 28/03/2020 13:38

You should comment of his clothes bet he’s not got off the catwalk!
Sounds like he’s going to get more controlling and jealous, nip it in the bud or get rid.

coffeeandcreamer · 28/03/2020 13:38
