To think I can still get away with wearing short shorts?

I’m 23 and a UK size 10 with an 18 month old dd. My legs aren’t particularly toned but I don’t think they’re completely awful! I was looking at clothes for the summer earlier (when we can finally go out!) and I came across a pair of pink shorts that I really liked the look of. I asked my dp what he thought and he said perhaps it would be best to wear trousers or 3/4 lengths now that I am a mum and that my legs aren’t completely toned! I was really annoyed! I had suggested wearing them with a white jumper/ long sleeved t-shirt so it’s not like I would be showing my stomach. When I asked him why he said that he said that whilst I am still youngish I need to dress appropriately now that I have a child. It’s taken me ages after having my dd to feel comfortable within myself and I just feel upset now. Aibu to think that I can still wear shorts?

Oh Ella! You're not youngish, you are very young indeed!

So he

Wants you to get your hair short and curly like your 55 year old neighbor

Doesn't like bold colored or short dresses

Doesn't think you should wear shorts now you're a mother

He sounds incredibly controlling and to be honest, rather vile.

You deserve SO much better than this.

I'm 43 size 12-14 & wear shorts that are short (but not hot pants) in the summer.
I wear shorter skirts & dresses too!!
I don't have anyone to tell me whether or not it's appropriate so I just wear what I like...

At 23 you should be enjoying fashion!!
At your age I went out clubbing in my white Morgan mini & knee high boots with my Miss Selfridge PVC mac, actually I was a size 8-10 then. Or I would wear a tight pencil skirt with heels & a little top to a UK Garage club & dance all night (in heels!!).
Sigh. Those were the days etc

Terralee · 28/03/2020 16:52

Anyway never let a man tell you what to wear, or to criticise you or make you feel bad. That's what I've learnt in life.
Life is far too short to put up with that shit!!

EmeraldShamrock · 28/03/2020 17:16

This says a lot about his mind set? Does he believe women can never dress sexy after they give birth. Wear the shorts buy many colours size 10 or 30 as long as your happy. Don't let him ruin your confidence.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 28/03/2020 17:20

What else have you to stop doing now you are a mother OP?

Almostfifty · 28/03/2020 18:28

I'm in my late fifties, milk bottle legs (though pretty toned) and I wear shortish shorts.

Do not let any person tell you what to wear, you're 23 and absolutely at the top of your game.

Sparrowlegs248 · 28/03/2020 18:30

Ffs. 23 and a size 10, yes, yes you can wear short shorts. I'm 42 and if I was a size 10 would also wear short shorts, on holiday, beach etc.

Ellaandtoddler · 28/03/2020 18:49

@Robstersgirl you look lovely!

I feel really sad reading all the comments. I will post in the relationships section a bit later. I always thought I had a great relationship- it was just this one thing that picked away

no, mutton dressed as lamb isn’t a “bad look” ffs, it’s a misogynistic concept to keep women in their place.

I think a 63 yr old woman wearing hot pants is unbecoming. Not sure thats misogyny...

lmcneil003 · 28/03/2020 19:19

Same as a 56yr old man wearing jeans hanging off his Arse and a baseball cap.

PhoneLock · 28/03/2020 19:20

Well, I have a few years on the OP and have absolutely no qualms wearing hot pants. In the appropriate situation, obviously!

To think I can still get away with wearing short shorts?
lmcneil003 · 28/03/2020 19:57

I doubt many people look like you phone. You're in great shape....

TeacherForGood · 28/03/2020 20:26

Your partner is simply wrong.

Nanalisa60 · 28/03/2020 20:34

God god your 23!! Show off your pins!!
I wore shorts till I was about 45 I did not make a decision to stop wearing them I just stoped buying new ones and eventually the old ones got worn out and thrown away.

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 28/03/2020 20:35

Buy the shorts, and some wine. Ditch the husband. I bet you’re gorgeous

pointythings · 28/03/2020 21:06

lmcneil003 don't worry, you've shown plenty of misogyny on other threads. Now you're just adding ageism to the mix. Nice... Hmm

'Unbecoming' indeed - hello, it's 2020!

TheTeenageYears · 29/03/2020 06:18

So he's a bit overweight and rather than focus on what he can do about that so that you remain interested in him he would rather try and control you so no one else is interested in you.

He gets the best of both worlds - no effort required by him to eat/drink/exercise but low risk of you having your head turned by someone because he controls how you look.

It's been mid 30's in the summer several years in a row - the world and his great granny is wearing shorts. Trousers or 3/4 length trousers would be hell.

Raffathebear · 29/03/2020 06:31

Your DH is awful.

peachypetite · 29/03/2020 06:51

Your DH sounds very controlling

Shoxfordian · 29/03/2020 06:53

Buy the shorts, divorce the controlling knobhead

H1ghC0r0na · 29/03/2020 07:05

He sounds jealous (of your body after birth) and insecure.
Buy him some short shorts too. Then he doesn't have to feel left out.

ploughingthrough · 29/03/2020 07:25

You can wear whatever you want. I am a UK size 12, have slightly wobbly thighs and 2 children and I'm 34- I live in a hot country and wear shorts all the time! Don't ask your DH next time!

StarlightLady · 29/03/2020 08:06

I’m in my 40s. I wear short shorts and sometimes go braless on warm summer days. You go girl!

Bluntness100 · 29/03/2020 08:13

It sounds sadly op he wants to make sure you don’t look attractive to other men, with the don’t wear shorts and cut your hair. So yes it’s insecurity,

I’m fifty one, in the summer I will wear shorts that are mid thigh, to be fair I don’t wear them out usually, more round the house and garden, and i have long hair.

He’s trying to control you, as said, I suspect because he’s worried men will find you attractive, so he wants you to look as frumpy as possible.

Do not do as he asks, keep your hair as you like it, wear what you wish. Don’t let his problems be yours.
