AIBU to think that after the PM's speech tonight which could not be more clear in its meaning and instruction, that if this does not keep people at home then I despair for the country and it's future.

Whatever happened to pulling together in times of crisis?
Seems it doesn't stand up to internet anonymity.

However, it's very different from other crises. In wartime, for example, there will be shortage of food and material products. If areas are being bombed then civilians are directly at risk. But people could band together, support and help each other, you didn't have to practice social distancing. Now, we aren't even able to go near one another for fear of catching/transmitting the virus. So no, no banding together while there is still the option of anonymously telling people online that they're stupid, selfish twats who deserve to die anyway. Sad

It also wasn't clear about split parents. Can a child leave one parent's home to go to.

Or you could just adopt the Borris Johnson approach and not bother having contact with your offspring at all.

Moanranger · 24/03/2020 05:50

Liquorice read my post. I am on a livery yard, not a DIY yard. He will get seen to by grooms.
PPs in general going to work is clearly not limited to key workers. Construction cannot be done from home.BJ is trying to avoid shutting down the entire economy. But those parts of it that are causing people to loiter together are being shut. It is pretty clear.

Loooobyloo · 24/03/2020 07:24

I clean in a nursery which is staying home for key workers children. Do I clean or don't I? am I considered a key worker? Of course I'll contact my boss later but it's a bit early now. If she says yes I'm not sure I want to go, I live with a vunlnerable adult with asthma.

I also clean for a lady with cerebral palsy who won't have anyone else to do it. I told her I couldn't come last Friday and she didn't get it, she was very, very angry, not at me as such but at the situation.

I've already had a few clients who are at home and capable of doing their own cleaning saying "I'd appreciate not if you could come" really?!

elshajd · 24/03/2020 07:43

If asked just say you live together. I don’t think you’ll be expected to show your council tax registration. Hold hands when out just so everyone knows you’re a couple

Have you always been like this or is your irresponsibility a new problem?

Whoareyoudududu · 24/03/2020 07:47

My DH’s workplace isn’t essential but the company have said they all have to continue going to work until/unless the government demands they shut Hmm. I mean, I think that’s kinda what Boris said last night but what do we know?

He’s a materials engineer fwiw, works within the construction industry. Most, if not all construction has ground to a halt so DH isn’t sure why they’re still insisting on being open. Further nail in coffin is the fact my DH can WFH as he has a work laptop and phone. So angry right now, I’m pregnant so ‘high risk’ and we have a DS with asthma.

Just read the government guidance on the gov.uk website. It still doesnt say only key workers are allowed to go to work. It says only if absolutely necessary and if you cant work from home. So lots of businesses will still ask their staff to come in.

Xenia · 24/03/2020 08:02

Yes, we need lots of workers to continue to go to work to keep the country going and ensure tax is paid to pay for all these measures. ON which businesses must close it is a limited list - if you are not on it then you do not have to do so it seems to say

On which must close the following is useful:-

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/874732/230320_-Revised_guidance_note-_finalVF.pdf

eg lots of shops must close but garages and vets can open as can hardware shops, launderettes, dry cleaners, post offices, banks, newsagents. If you live at a caravan park as many do you can continue to live there.

Places of worship can remain open for solitary worship and for live streaming of a service without parishioners there.

The way they have done it is if your business is not on the banned list you can remain open.

In terms of timing this new list is not law yet

"As of 2pm on 21 March 2020, closures on the original list [ they mean not the list issued yesterady] from 20thMarch are now enforceable by law in England and Wales due to the threat to public health. The government will extend the law and enforcement powers [ they mean the list I link above it not yet the law ] to include the new list of premises for closure. Further measures on enforcement could be taken following the passage of the Coronavirus Billthrough parliament."

Kay burley has just said that you only go to work if the work is deemed essential.

Makemeaname · 24/03/2020 08:08

From the govuk twitter. Updated from last night where it said key workers only, now saying anyone who can't work from home.

Prime Ministers speech
FunkyKingston · 24/03/2020 08:32

Kay burley has just said that you only go to work if the work is deemed essential.

And yet Kay Burley went to work.

daisypond · 24/03/2020 08:38

And yet Kay Burley went to work.
Journalists and public service broadcasting are on the key worker list.

TabbyMumz · 24/03/2020 08:47

It's not clear that only key workers can go to work. Kay Burley has just repeated the confusing sentence which said only if absolutely necessary and you cant work from home.

FunkyKingston · 24/03/2020 08:57

Journalists and public service broadcasting are on the key worker list.

I am aware. It was a comment on the fact that Burley and Sky news are both a bit shite. Someone who'd spent 10 years watching no news would be better informed than someone who'd spent a decade watching Sky news.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 24/03/2020 09:08

The builders who are doing next door's patio just turned up with a load of hardcore. Obviously it's business as usual here, as people clearly need patios in these dark times. Hmm

Xenia · 24/03/2020 09:18

Makeme, I am glad the gov changed that tweet from last night as last night's was very very wrong (referring only to key workers). Many many work places are lawfully open and we need them open to earn money to pay the wages of nurses. It is vital they stay open.

elshajd · 24/03/2020 10:02

The government need to publish a detailed list of who can and can't go to work to make it completely clear and remove any doubt whatsoever.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 24/03/2020 10:45

Have you always been like this or is your irresponsibility a new problem?

Explain how that’s irresponsible? They are going to be living together for the duration of the lockdown. Like a couple who live together. Her partner isn’t going back and forth to a separate household. It’s no different to any other couple who live together in terms of risk of spread. Nothing irresponsible about it.

Xenia · 24/03/2020 15:05

Everyone can work unless (a) they are on this list or (b) their work can be done from home assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/874732/230320_-Revised_guidance_note-_finalVF.pdf[ so once this is in force - it is not in force yet by the way - that is the list

elshajd · 24/03/2020 15:26

Explain how that’s irresponsible? They are going to be living together for the duration of the lockdown

Your advice was "just say you live together" and "you aren't going to be asked to show your council tax bill" - you are recommending that they lie.

It's people like you that are making this mess worse.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 24/03/2020 16:28

I asked you to explain how I was being irresponsible. Them lying poses absolutely no risk to life or spread of the virus. None. They are in exactly the same situation as a couple who live together on paper. For the duration of the lockdown they are one household.

It's people like you that are making this mess worse.

Ha! Try an advanced search on my name over the last few days. You’ve got the wrong person here.

Punkyfish3000 · 25/03/2020 08:06

@sulkyswede Jollyes pet shops are still open, I can’t comment on other chain pet shops though
