AIBU to think that after the PM's speech tonight which could not be more clear in its meaning and instruction, that if this does not keep people at home then I despair for the country and it's future.

Oh yes sorry bank and post offices for sure.

I think more onus should be made on employers of those in office based jobs which can be done from home, the government should be telling them that they must enable work from home unless they can provide sufficient rationale.

Aragog · 23/03/2020 21:51

I'd really like to know about solicitors' offices and banks

Banks came under key workers

Some solicitors came under key workers too - wills and probate, criminal (linked to courts)

So that needs new clarification if it's changed

Doggybiccys · 23/03/2020 21:52

Genuine question. Friends DH is a taxi driver and most of his regulars are old biddys to and from shops - can he still do that? These are elderly people many with no family nearby but not in the very vulnerable category. Are other services addressing their needs?

cassgate · 23/03/2020 21:53

This is the problem, I have friends who work within an industry deemed to be essential. Their individual roles are however not essential but they have been told they have to go in. Until the government tell these essential companies that they also must comply with the rules and only those who are necessary to ensure that the systems can be maintained are deemed key workers then nothing will change. My DH works for a big insurance company all workers are WFH however one of his team told him that he was going to take up a key worker space at his child’s school so he could WFH. DH told him that he would rather he not work at all than do that as his role was not essential and the company would not collapse without him so in the reality he was not a key worker at all.

I don't think it was clear at all. The news is saying we are in lockdown but I don't think that's what he said.

Doggyperson · 23/03/2020 22:02

I've started work as a courier and we're classed as essential workers. Not too sure how I feel about delivering someone's 'essential' next parcel!

I realise a lot will be ordering online now all the shops are shut but I'm feeling a little vulnerable. We touch parcels that have been here there and everywhere. We aren't provided with gloves or sanitiser.

We do just put on the doorstep and walk away but still.

DoTheNextRightThing · 23/03/2020 22:02

I'm trying to figure out what to do about my partner. I technically live alone, but he's here with me at least 4 days/nights a week. He's here right now. I don’t want to be completely alone for the next three weeks (or more!) - but technically he isn't "a member of my household" Sad

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 23/03/2020 22:04

Post offices are definitely staying open as I was recruited to work in one during the crisis.

Lanurk · 23/03/2020 22:08

I wish they’d clarified by saying something along the lines of “if you’re not a category 1-3 key worker then you ARE NOT to go to work as your work is non essential.”

BigChocFrenzy · 23/03/2020 22:08

"The news is saying we are in lockdown but I don't think that's what he said."

Politicians avoid actually using the word "lockdown"
but the rules he stated do define a lockdown similar to those in other European countries.

I agree that Boris is not the most coherent of politicians,
but he actually was reasonably clear tonight, for once

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 23/03/2020 22:08

@DoTheNextRightThing can he stay with you for 3 weeks? If so keep him there.

Thedogscollar · 23/03/2020 22:23

After reading some and I stress some of the posts on here I fear we are heading up Shit creek with no paddles for sure.
This is not rocket science guys your life will depend on it.

"The news is saying we are in lockdown but I don't think that's what he said."

Does he really need to use a specific word for people to understand what he said?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 23/03/2020 22:29

It has become glaringly obvious during this situation that the level of intelligence in the Uk spans a broad spectrum.

ZombieFan · 23/03/2020 22:39

Why are so many adults so short of a few brain cells. The message was very clear, sort your shit out and stay at home.

Stop making excuses about such trivial crap, peoples lives are at risk.

DoTheNextRightThing · 23/03/2020 22:42

@JuanSheetIsPlenty he can yes, we work for the same company so we're both WFH now. He's also my transport since I don't drive, so without him I have no way of getting supplies. I just hope that doesn't get me into trouble!

Makemeaname · 23/03/2020 22:43

Wish they had made the announcement earlier in the day.

Especially confused regarding the "only go to work if your work is essential" vs "only go to work if you can't work from home" thing.

And because it was an evening announcement, I'm off to bed in a minute not knowing whether I'm going into work tomorrow, because they haven't had a chance to coordinate a plan

StandUpStraight · 23/03/2020 22:45

Yep. It has been astonishing to watch. I reckon the govt were going to hold out for another day or so, but took one look at the weather forecast for tomorrow, and decided to pull the plug.

OlaEliza · 23/03/2020 22:45

🙈

It's pretty simple. Just stay at home unless your work is essential. Only go out for food.

It's all detailed on his Instagram.

StandUpStraight · 23/03/2020 22:48

Official advice up now, sorry if this is a duplicate post www.gov.uk/government/publications/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 23/03/2020 22:52

It was very clear

There is always going to be a number of scenarios that will arise - you just have to apply the information given

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 23/03/2020 22:54

I just hope that doesn't get me into trouble!

I doubt it will. If asked just say you live together. I don’t think you’ll be expected to show your council tax registration. Hold hands when out just so everyone knows you’re a couple Grin

Pinkpeone1 · 23/03/2020 22:57

It was clear. STAY HOME

Pinkpeone1 · 23/03/2020 22:58

Why is the UK the last country in the world to get this?

AlternativePerspective · 23/03/2020 23:06

Are people being deliberately thick or is it a gift they were born with/

It was very clear. You don’t go out unless to work where you are not able to work from home.

Non essential shops to close as well as libraries.

If your work involves having to go into someone’s house then you don’t go there because you should only have the people who live in that house there.

Why is it people need to be spoon fed every tiny detail
