AIBU to think that after the PM's speech tonight which could not be more clear in its meaning and instruction, that if this does not keep people at home then I despair for the country and it's future.

No he said you can go out with your family members and 2 others.

No he flipping didn’t! Shock

You are allowed out with the members of your household. You aren’t allowed to bump into two friends and go for a walk!!

Any gatherings of more than two people (except for family households) are banned! So you can go out on your own (just you!) and bump into your friend margaret on her own and say hi. But if she is with her husband John then you can’t say hello, you must leave them alone.

Poppinjay · 23/03/2020 21:33

I have never been stopped by/had any involvement with the the police! What do I do if they challenge me on my way to my Grandads?

You just tell them where you're going and why.

LittleSweet · 23/03/2020 21:33

He was clenching his hands so tightly they were white.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 23/03/2020 21:34

I'm a self employed cleaner and already two of my clients are saying, I'd really appreciate it if you'd come in. Bloody hell, it's not getting through to some is it!

same! I had someone trying to book me for this week. Err no!!

Willow2017 · 23/03/2020 21:35

He said you can be in a gathering of your household that you live with and 2 others

No he didnt!

we will stop all gatherings of more than two people in public – excluding people you live with
one form of exercise a day - for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household
So if you are a family of 4 you can go for a walk together if you stick to social distancing from others.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 23/03/2020 21:35

and bump into your friend margaret on her own and say hi.

But don’t do this. There’s really no need to take that risk. Just wave at her from 10 feet away. You don’t need to be right beside anyone.

Maryann1975 · 23/03/2020 21:35

A bloody library book? Are u serious???? Libraries are now shut anyway
I assumed the person asking about the library was joking. There are many ridiculous questions popping up on mumsnet it what is essential and I assumed this poster was mocking them a bit.

daisypond · 23/03/2020 21:36

How is this going to be policed? So many flouted the guidance at the weekend. Are people - I assume the same people - actually going to take any notice?

Dizzywizz · 23/03/2020 21:36

@SkaLaLand he said you can go out to care for vulnerable people, so your grandad would count under that

sulkyswede · 23/03/2020 21:36

That will stop schools who have key workers children in from going on walks and so on, they will now have to stay on the school premises.

cardibach · 23/03/2020 21:36

@TabbyMumz that is absolutely not what it said! This is why we are where we are, people just deciding their own interpretation of very clear instructions.
You do not meet with friends or anyone else you don’t live with. That was absolutely crystal clear. If more than 2 people are seem together and don’t seem to be family, they will be separated. You can’t go out with all your family and 2 fandoms. FFS!

Frozenfan2019 · 23/03/2020 21:37

I feel sick and I have already done a frightened poo

I'm sorry I know it's not funny but I am just imagining the poo emoji looking terrified.

Skalaland visiting your vulnerable grandparents is fine. If the police stop you just explain you are visiting your vulnerable grandparents. They are just human beings like us. They are decent people. We are not in the US where they will pull a gun on you!!

Treaclepie19 · 23/03/2020 21:37

@TabbyMumz This is from the transcript. You should only go out with members of your house. He was so clear about this.
"one form of exercise a day - for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household;"

maddening · 23/03/2020 21:39

Here is from the transcript :
That is why people will only be allowed to leave their home for the following very limited purposes: Shopping for basic necessities as infrequently as possible; one form of exercise a day, for example, a run, walk, or cycle alone or with members of your household; any medical need to provide care or to help a vulnerable person; and traveling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home. That’s all. These are the only reasons you should leave your home.

And further on

To ensure compliance with the government’s instruction to stay at home, we will immediately close all shops selling non-essential goods, including clothing and electronics stores and other premises, including libraries, playgrounds, and outdoor gyms and places of worship. We’ll stop all gatherings of more than two people in public, excluding people you live with. And we’ll stop all social events including weddings, baptisms, and other ceremonies, but excluding funerals. Parks will remain open for exercise, but gatherings will be dispersed.

Doggyperson · 23/03/2020 21:41

The other thing is, he's said exercise is allowed once a day. I went for a run on the canal path yesterday and it was very busy so all those stuck in will now be going out and exercising more. So I expect the canal path to be even busier and the countryside. So the threat is still there.

Thymelord · 23/03/2020 21:41

It was clear to me; however, I think many places are going to say that it wasn't clear and flout it. My office is clearly going to remain open, otherwise I'd have been contacted by now and I haven't. There's absolutely nothing essential about the work we do but there you go.

Metoyoutoo · 23/03/2020 21:42

Only go to work if it’s an essential business

Prime Ministers speech
maddening · 23/03/2020 21:44

So yes I think work piece is open to interpretation and it would not hurt the government to come out and clarify.

So the only shops open are food shops and pharmacies, petrol stations also I would imagine. It does not mention closure non-retail and non-public business and this is not in the same part that talks about travel to work.

LochJessMonster · 23/03/2020 21:46

When does this start?
Can I take my dog for his evening walk now?

daisypond · 23/03/2020 21:46

I’m sure banks and post offices will stay open - they are essential services.

maddening · 23/03/2020 21:47

The wording around work was not essential - it was "when necessary and cannot be done from home"

Xenia · 23/03/2020 21:47

There are a lot of essential businesses where work cannot be done from home and that is accepted by the state. We need all those factories making drugs. We need face masks. We need garages to repair cars. We need people's heating at home to be repaired so they do not die in winter. We need people like my son driving to work then to deliver groceries for 10 hours to people at home day in day out.

I suspect it will be policed gently at first eg I doubt a team of police will raid a Stamford Hill yeshiva or a Brent mosque to check the numbers attending. Baptisms are banned so are also Jewish circumcisms even if only the parents and the person doing the non essential operation?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 23/03/2020 21:48

If more than 2 people are seem together and don’t seem to be family, they will be separated.

Or fined and/or arrested.

Lou0390 · 23/03/2020 21:49

@PumpkinPie2016 so sorry for your loss Thanks
