To think the holiday home is my only option?

I live in a different country. I was over here visiting family from the start of March and several cancelled flights/worldwide pandemic later me, my dh and ds(2) can't get home.
My parents are very high risk and don't have enough space for us. On paper my in-laws have enough space on paper but in practice this isn't the case (currently squished in a room filled with storage boxes while dh sleeps on the floor).
No other family can accommodate us BUT my gran has a mostly unused holiday cottage in a tourist hot-spot that she has offered us for the duration and I've accepted. It is literally around the corner from where we were living before we moved abroad 2years ago.
I am now being made to feel guilty by various people because me and my family are 'part of the problem', 'running to our holiday homes and swamping these places', 'overwhelming the medical services' etc.
I'm doubting myself, we can't stay where we are for months, we can't get home, and we are not choosing to be here. We are having to pay astronomical rent and pet care costs in the country we are living in and can't afford to rent somewhere so I really cannot see that we have another option.
Wibu to carry on with our plans despite the naysayers?

Well if you self isolate in arrival for 14 days you will not lake a risk to them. Smile
You can’t stay where you are - so I would go but be strict about the self isolation.

pumpkinpie01 · 21/03/2020 23:11

To me that sounds the perfect solution - a house is empty , you are currently living in very cramped conditions. Don't feel bad you are doing the best for your family.

YABU - post on the covid board

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 23:12

Self isolate in the cottage. People are angry in the villages because they don't want to end up all in and whole village quarantined and that risk rises if people from more populated towns come in now. If you self isolate and don't go for scenic walks etc, they shouldn't have a problem in the end

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 23:13

I have a feeling I know which country🙈

AlexaShutUp · 21/03/2020 23:14

It sounds sensible to me. You have nowhere else to go.

Mamimawr · 21/03/2020 23:17

If it's in north west Wales PLEASE do not come here. We only have 11 critical care beds in Ysbyty Gwynedd for the whole of Gwynedd and Anglesey. It's like August bank holiday here at the moment and the NHS won't be able to cope.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 23:18

Wait. I got it turned around. you are stuck in uk, not other countryBlush oops

TheSmallAssassin · 21/03/2020 23:21

It’s not the same as people fleeing the cities, I don’t see that you have any choice! This is going to go on for months, you can’t all live in one room all that time!

tryingtoprep · 21/03/2020 23:24

It's not your fault you can't get home. You need somewhere to stay and have a family member's home to stay in. Self isolate when you get there but yes go.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 23:25

Do you have citizenship in the other country, or residency? Embassies are collecting people and providing emergency transports.

NoClarification · 21/03/2020 23:26

Mamimawr but she has no realistic other options, it isn't like she's coming for the sea air. Also, there aren't enough critical care beds anywhere in the country.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 21/03/2020 23:27

I think you've misunderstood what people are saying about certain people running to their holiday homes. People aren't taking issue with anyone sheltering in a random holiday home. They are annoyed with those idiots who are taking the opportunity to go on an actual holiday to their holiday home and swan around like nothing's wrong.

L0bstersLass · 21/03/2020 23:28

What @Mamimawr said.
Please stay away from north-west Wales.

Waterandlemonjuice · 21/03/2020 23:31

Perfectly reasonable to go there! You don’t have much choice. Just be sensible re isolating

Vinipote · 21/03/2020 23:33

Our villages in North West Wales have been swamped with tourists today 😔

nocoolnamesleft · 21/03/2020 23:42

Cumbria also having problems. And we have very limited hospital care at the best of times.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 23:43

Of course you should go. It makes sense.

Thelaughinggnome123 · 21/03/2020 23:49

Of course you should go. Self isolate for 14 days.

L0bstersLass · 21/03/2020 23:49

@RosesandIris - it doesn't make sense for the local population to have more people moving to the area. OP should stay where she is.

2fallsagain · 21/03/2020 23:54

I don't think you have a choice. You can't stay where you are.

FrenchBoule · 21/03/2020 23:54

Please stay away from the Highlands.
8 beds in critical care at Raigmore in Inverness

RossPoldarksChest · 21/03/2020 23:57

You have a good reason to need to use it. You're not fleeing your town house for your country house.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 21/03/2020 23:57

Do you have the correct immigration status? Especially, are you an EEA national with the right to reside? In which case you have every bit as much right to be there and to use the medical facilities as the people already there.

Becca19962014 · 22/03/2020 00:02

I'm in rural mid Wales. If you come here and get ill or need prescriptions you'll be sent back home. Holiday parks, hotels, b&bs etc that are registered as such are all being closed and emptied of people.

Too little too late in my opinion. But it's the only way. We don't have the resources for those who live here.

I appreciate your situation but I know here it's become a zero tolerance approach, we have no hospital, no ICU. Most GP surgeries have already been closed, those there are are triaged via 111, the cottage hospital triaged via 111. Pharmacies are only open four hours a day from tomorrow; most shops are closed; nothing other than food shops are open and those barely have anything in.
