To feel pissed off with tailgating drivers!

Hi,

I’ve never been a person who goes above the speed limits when driving, obviously I’ve had a few moments were I’ve unintentionally gone over without realising but I’m not an intentional and persistent speeder.

Anyway, nearly everyday, I’m tailgated. More so in 30mph zones. I can’t stand it. I just can’t Understand why they feel I’m not going fast enough if I’m driving right at 30 in a 30. It really annoys me so much.

I try not to allow it to intimidate me but it really does. On my way home from work I was doing 55 on a 60mph road and was tailgated the whole way. When I got to the end of the road, I had to stop because it was a junction, and I looked in my mirror and I saw the driver staring at me and he flapped his arms up in the air as if I had been too slow which obviously I wasn’t. I got pissed off and pulled the fingers at him. He then flashed his lights at me (aggressively)

Just needed a rant I guess!

Nothing you say is going to convince me that you aren't the problem.

ACoupleofPeaches · 13/03/2020 09:35

the rest of us will stay not being tailgated every single time we are behind the wheel

It happens to me all the time and if I went out in the car twice a day I am pretty sure it would happen to me twie a day.

However:

a) it only really started when I moved to a rural area of the Midlands. It never tended to happen as much when I lived further south.

b) I am normally a few mph over the speed limit, if I'm honest

Both of which suggest it is not so simple as it's just driving 5mph under the limit that provokes that behaviour.

I think some people are just totally in denial about stopping distances and what's safe.

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:37

And do I care? @isallthedramaMickiloveit

You don’t know me and have never seen me drive so how would you know? This thread was about being annoyed at tailgaters, not if my driving is up to standard.

If I’m doing the speed limit and taking hazards into consideration then I’m not doing much wrong. That’s what you’re meant to do. DVLA should take your licence off you, make you do your lessons again and sit your theory and practical test again. Awful attitude

That’s very true. On a motorway I always leave a sensible gap between me and the car in front and other cars incessantly pop into it. Almost immediately after I’ve widened the gap again another bugger does it!

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/03/2020 09:40

Op you will be glad to know, i drove at 40mph in a 50mph.

It was chucking it down with rain but then it stopped and i drove the speed limit.

SharkasticBitch · 13/03/2020 09:42

Hmm, would not appear to be true of everyone...

"Previous research has shown tailgating to be the chief bugbear among road users. But new data from an independent national survey of 1,200 motorists, reveals it’s much more than just a nuisance.

The study, conducted by Select Car Leasing, revealed that tailgating is also the thing that causes motorists to be the most frightened and distressed while behind the wheel - trumping the fear of actually having a crash.

Almost a third – 32% of survey respondents - said ‘drivers driving too close behind me’ was their biggest road-related fear.

Tailgating was ahead of breaking down (31%), being crashed into (25%) and getting lost (22%)"

Haha I love it when the batshittery of MN peaks before 10am. Gives me a good laugh for the rest of the day.
Yea. I stand by you being the problem.

SharkasticBitch · 13/03/2020 09:44

And from the Highway Agency...

"Nearly 9 out of 10 (87%) drivers say they’ve experienced or witnessed it.

Tailgating is a factor in 1 in 8 casualties on the strategic road network."

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:45

@vodkaredbullgirl and that’s exactly what I’d do as well. At least we are on the same page now.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/03/2020 09:47

You are provoking me by saying I’m at fault if I won’t drive at 60 on a dangerous bendy road.

Again with the bad faith. You do know everyone can read what is actually written, so your persistent and repeated attempts to twist things doesn't work. Why can't you have a discussion based on what is actually being said rather than what you are trying to fabricate?

(I see it has turned into a "dangerous bendy road" now too)

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:47

@isallthedramaMickiloveit that’s your opinion. I don’t care as you haven’t seen me driving so you couldn’t possibly know if I’m at fault or not.

Like I said, I drive legally and considerably to the dangers on any particular road. That’s doing things correctly. Tailgaters don’t give a damn if there’s a bend until they hit at 70mph and go straight through a hedge.

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:49

@BuzzShitbagBobbly Grow up. If you saw the road I am talking about you’d agree that 60 is not appropriate for it. If you wanna go flying at 60 when it’s not safe to do so, that’s your problem. Just because you’re dangerous doesn’t mean I am.

OP posts:
vodkaredbullgirl · 13/03/2020 09:49

Which road are you talking about?

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:50

@vodkaredbullgirl I’m not disclosing it. It’s quite near where I live and I’d rather not disclose my location on the internet to strangers

OP posts:
Vulpine · 13/03/2020 09:53

Where are all the tail gaters going that's so important they have to drive fast all the time?

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/03/2020 09:54

Maybe they need to pee lol

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:55

Maybe they do maybe they don’t. The fact is tailgating is unnecessary, it stresses me out and it just makes me slow way down to piss them off. So they may feel that they’ll intimidate to speed up, but I’ll just do the opposite. They aren’t going to gain anything

OP posts:
BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/03/2020 09:57

You appear utterly incapable of engaging with the facts - nowhere have I said anything you are saying I have, you are obsessed with putting false words in my mouth to make your view sound better. So telling me to grow up is weird when you're behaving like that.

And please stop @-ing me on this thread, thank you.

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 10:00

@BuzzShitbagBobbly you are clearly making me out to be someone who can’t drive and that I am too slow. Re read all your pp’s. If it is safe to drive at full speed, I do it. I’m not slow unless there’s a reason to.

OP posts:
BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/03/2020 10:07

I'll ask again - please stop @-ing me on this thread, thank you.

No I am not, I am saying that you should at least be willing to look at yourself, because the level and frequency of hassle you are experiencing is crazy high. I would be considering the same thing if I was in your shoes.

You are reading far more personal slight into mine and others' comments than is being made and I think that anger is affecting your responses.

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 10:10

I do look at my driving. But I see nothing wrong in regards to the tailgating. I’m doing the speed limit or under if it’s necessary.

The amount of tailgating I receive doesn’t necessarily mean that I am doing things wrong, it means the amount impatient drivers there are are on the rise

friendineed · 13/03/2020 10:16

@BootShakin Do you have a big car and a little dick?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/03/2020 10:16

Have you contacted your local police force road safety team? If the problem is really very persistent on this specific road, they may already be aware and another complaint could be enough for them to put up a temporary camera or schedule a traffic police presence.

If you can supply dashcam footage (maybe borrow an extra one or turn your front facing cam round temporarily?) that would also help - and you may be able to upload it directly to the police in your area? That will give them info about your speed, the tailgater's speed/closeness/identity, the road and weather conditions etc.

There may also be some community speeding initiatives you could get involved with or set up that may help the source issue of speeding as you see it.

All practical suggestions for you which are probably better for your blood pressure than ding-donging with me on MN! (that is a friendly joke btw Grin )

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 10:21

Fair enough. And haha, yeah I’m not on here to fight. I was just proving a point that it’s not necessarily my fault
