To feel pissed off with tailgating drivers!

Hi,

I’ve never been a person who goes above the speed limits when driving, obviously I’ve had a few moments were I’ve unintentionally gone over without realising but I’m not an intentional and persistent speeder.

Anyway, nearly everyday, I’m tailgated. More so in 30mph zones. I can’t stand it. I just can’t Understand why they feel I’m not going fast enough if I’m driving right at 30 in a 30. It really annoys me so much.

I try not to allow it to intimidate me but it really does. On my way home from work I was doing 55 on a 60mph road and was tailgated the whole way. When I got to the end of the road, I had to stop because it was a junction, and I looked in my mirror and I saw the driver staring at me and he flapped his arms up in the air as if I had been too slow which obviously I wasn’t. I got pissed off and pulled the fingers at him. He then flashed his lights at me (aggressively)

Just needed a rant I guess!

On the A roads where I live, most people I've encountered drive at 5-10mph below the 60mph limit, so you're not alone, OP.

Lots of people drive between 55 and 65mph on the motorway, too, because apparently the most fuel efficient speed.

Lots of anger on this thread!

SignOnTheWindow · 12/03/2020 22:01

I got my dad a rear window sticker that says "The closer you get, the slower I go..."

Whenisithometime · 12/03/2020 22:05

@12345ct don’t think I should get the bus. Would you rather I drove fully at 60 round a big bend and then killed somebody? No xxx

So according to many of you, those of us who are not as confident as most drivers should stay at home or use public transport. Charming!

Whenisithometime · 12/03/2020 22:07

@TheSparklyPussycat she is just doesn’t know what she is talking about. Let’s hope she never has an accident with that attitude

I've learnt not to give a flying fuck. And I don't

Palavah · 12/03/2020 22:14

Why were you driving at 55 in a 60 zone?

The speed limit takes account of bends and inclines.

If you were to drive as you've described in your test ( i don’t think 50 is fine tbh. I slow down to 40 when I take the bends ) then you would fail.

Have you thought about taking the advanced test so you can drive appropriately for the conditions?

AufderAutobahn · 12/03/2020 22:16

This thread is laughable. In some people's minds, if you're not driving right at the speed limit even on bumpy and bendy roads, you must be an over cautious nervebag who should be taking the bus. There's no between ground. OP, YANBU.

Palavah · 12/03/2020 22:17

You can slow down a bit on roads but it shouldn't be necessary to slow down to 40 in a 60 zone!

dkanin · 12/03/2020 22:19

I was actually considering making a similar post earlier! I was tailgated through heavy traffic on an A road this afternoon by a massive lorry and all I could see in my mirror was the black of the grille, it was about a foot behind my hatchback boot. I was wondering whether to report it but I wasn't sure how or who to

ImGoingSlightlyBrad · 12/03/2020 22:20

I swear some people here have never driven a national speed limit country road.

You do 60mph in any round here and you'll go straight into the ditch. That's not nerves or caution or whatever. That's just fact.

I suspect most are assuming a nice, slightly bendy town road with a 60mph limit. A world of difference.

SignOnTheWindow · 12/03/2020 22:23

If you were to drive as you've described in your test ( i don’t think 50 is fine tbh. I slow down to 40 when I take the bends ) then you would fail

Not true at all. There are plenty of 60mph roads round here with bends that require even the most reckless drivers to slow to 40mph. I guess it depends where you live.

Fespital · 12/03/2020 22:23

I've been tailgated many times for doing 22mph on my speedo = 20mph on my sat nav in a 20mph. Including being zoomed past at a place with a MASSIVE flashing activated 20mph sign.

Dicks will be dicks. Drive at a safe speed for the road conditions and those with high blood pressure at slow drivers remember better a slow driver than a dead driver.

mrsBtheparker · 12/03/2020 22:25

I just turn my rear view mirror sideways so I can't see usually.

Find the exact position to flick the rear view mirror so it reflects straight back, wonderful at night, similarly adjest your wing mirrors! Braking when being tailgated is useless but changing down a gear works very well.
You were going slow, though to him. Maybe pull over next time if you dont want someone up your arse.
No such thing as 'too slow' on UK roads, I don't think we have a minimum speed limit as some other cpountries do. I'd certainly not pull over if someone wants to break the speed limit and I say that as someone described by my OH as Lewis Hamilton on a bad day!

TinglyFeets · 12/03/2020 22:27

If you were to drive as you've described in your test ( i don’t think 50 is fine tbh. I slow down to 40 when I take the bends ) then you would fail.

No you wouldn't. What clap trap.

The OP said the speedometer read 55 - perfectly legal and within test limits. 50 came from everyone else saying they thought 55 on a car speedo was 50 in reality. Maybe true but a test instructor will go by the car reading.

They also said they slow down to 40 for bends. As you or I haven't seen the bends we have literally no idea if 40 was too slow, too fast or just right.

FurryMuzzles · 12/03/2020 22:31

The speed limit takes account of bends and inclines.

The speed limit is not an indication that it is safe to go round a bend at that speed. Can you imagine taking 90 degree residential corners at 30 mph just because that was the limit?

It's bonkers to suggest a nsl road is always safe at 60mph at all times. One near me as a bumpy railway crossing in a 50mph zone. You'll do some car damage if you drive across it at top whack.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 12/03/2020 22:40

OP first your driving "at the speed limit"

Then it is 55mph

Then it's becoming 50-55

Then it's slowing down to 40 for the bends

You clearly don't ' drive at the speed limit'

Your clearly not as competent a driver as you think you are. And you drive too slow.

Alsohuman · 12/03/2020 22:44

Have you thought about taking the advanced test so you can drive appropriately for the conditions?

On many country roads that’s not 60, despite that being the speed limit. I’m sure a majority of posters on this thread live in cities and otherwise only drive on motorways.

TheSparklyPussycat · 12/03/2020 22:58

The speed limit doesnt change according to whether there are bends in the road, as a PP seemed to think! Sometimes it says SLOW on the road itself, if coming up to a junction, and sometimes on motorway exits that curve it will say eg 50mph.

Whenisithometime · 12/03/2020 23:12

@DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon you’re twisting my words. What you’ve said I’d untrue. I said that I drive at full speed when it’s safe to do so

I slow down when it’s not and I definitely slow down for bends.

I am a competent driver FYI

BootShakin · 12/03/2020 23:14

I think most women drivers are shit. There I said it. And if you intend to drive under the speed limit, do pull over to the slower lane. The fast lane is for people who want to go FAST! not saying over the speed limit but I HATE slow drivers with a passion.

Yes PLEASE!!!!

Whenisithometime · 12/03/2020 23:17

@BootShakin are you a male? Why are you on here? And I am not a shit driver. I do not drive slowly. I drive in respect to the conditions of the road. Clearly some people on here lack these standards and it worries me that such tossers are on our roads

OP posts:
Whenisithometime · 12/03/2020 23:21

Do you not know that it’s really not safe to take sharp bends at 60mph road??? Hence why most of them are painted or signposted as “slow” !!!

Good god, DVLA should read these comments. They’d have a field revoking some of your licences.

OP posts:
Whenisithometime · 12/03/2020 23:27

@Palavah don’t talk nonsense. The speed limit does not take bends Into account, it is up to the driver to do that themselves.

Residential streets / housing estates etc are a 30mph limit but it’s only safe to do between 15-20mph in most of them depending on how narrow the streets are
