To feel pissed off with tailgating drivers!

Hi,

I’ve never been a person who goes above the speed limits when driving, obviously I’ve had a few moments were I’ve unintentionally gone over without realising but I’m not an intentional and persistent speeder.

Anyway, nearly everyday, I’m tailgated. More so in 30mph zones. I can’t stand it. I just can’t Understand why they feel I’m not going fast enough if I’m driving right at 30 in a 30. It really annoys me so much.

I try not to allow it to intimidate me but it really does. On my way home from work I was doing 55 on a 60mph road and was tailgated the whole way. When I got to the end of the road, I had to stop because it was a junction, and I looked in my mirror and I saw the driver staring at me and he flapped his arms up in the air as if I had been too slow which obviously I wasn’t. I got pissed off and pulled the fingers at him. He then flashed his lights at me (aggressively)

Just needed a rant I guess!

Last night I had a tailgater. He overtook me and sped off. I pulled up next to him at the Red. Light and I laughed at him. He did look sheepish but sped off the I caught up. With hi. Again and he turned left. Solihull, white Range Rover gwatm

30mph roads

Tailgating isn't an effective way to pass a slower vehicle. You need to be a little way back so you can go down the gears and get your speed up to pass them. Sitting right on their are means you pull out into the opposite carriageway at the same speed they are doing, forcing you to accelerate whilst on the wrong side of the road, so you take longer to pass.

That alone qualifies tailgaters as low on the Mensa scale.

BigGee · 14/03/2020 11:01

Right on their arse, that should say.

Agree. As for this idea that if you drive fast enough you never get tailgated or only slow drivers get tailgated? what a load of garbage. I like to drive fast- I drive a fast sports car and Ive frequently been right up to the speed limit and even over and still been tailgated.

Tailgaters are aggressive morons and will tailgate no matter what the speed of the person in front. Ive seen it happen on multiple occasions and not just to me either- to other drivers who were also driving fast. Theyre dangerous idiots who like to show off and peacock their aggression and perceived superiority on the road. The problem is with them and their single brain cell, not the fault of the person in front.

I agree that some of the posters on this thread have never driven on properly rural road. There's an A road near me which is single carriageway with lots of bends and dips that have a tendency to flood. There are only very limited places where you could pull over as well. It's pretty typical of a lot of roads in Cornwall, I would say.

In theory, the speed limit is 60- but as other have said you would have to be suicidal to do 60 along it, especially on the bends.

The worst thing is when people tailgate, when you aren't even at the front of the traffic, so have no real control over the speed. This actually really scares me, as I saw an accident a few years ago where the car at the front did an emergency stop, the one behind was able to stop without hitting them, but the car behind that hit the second car and rolled, because they hadn't left an appropriate stopping distance.

I live in Somerset so plenty of rural roads.

Agree. I went on a speed awareness course in Jan (yes, i know, i know!) and they told me that speed limits on roads only stay in place UNTIL there is a serious accident. Then, when that happens they will re-sign the road to a lower speed. They admitted that there are many bendy country roads which are signposted as 60 or 50 but are not safe to do that speed. They said nothing will be done until there is a bad accident.
This just shows that just because a speed limit is in place, doesnt mean it is SAFE to do that speed. Common sense is also involved.

Whenisithometime · 14/03/2020 13:59

I completely agree MimiLaRue and SansaSnark!

It just shocked me how some people on here didn’t know that you don’t always have to do the speed limit

Its obvious that you slow down when it comes to bends.

Whenisithometime · 14/03/2020 19:50

@vodkaredbullgirl exactly, some people didn’t seem to know that yet they have driving licences. Strange
