To feel pissed off with tailgating drivers!

Hi,

I’ve never been a person who goes above the speed limits when driving, obviously I’ve had a few moments were I’ve unintentionally gone over without realising but I’m not an intentional and persistent speeder.

Anyway, nearly everyday, I’m tailgated. More so in 30mph zones. I can’t stand it. I just can’t Understand why they feel I’m not going fast enough if I’m driving right at 30 in a 30. It really annoys me so much.

I try not to allow it to intimidate me but it really does. On my way home from work I was doing 55 on a 60mph road and was tailgated the whole way. When I got to the end of the road, I had to stop because it was a junction, and I looked in my mirror and I saw the driver staring at me and he flapped his arms up in the air as if I had been too slow which obviously I wasn’t. I got pissed off and pulled the fingers at him. He then flashed his lights at me (aggressively)

Just needed a rant I guess!

I think most women drivers are shit.

Maybe, but accident statistics say that significantly more men are more shit. Particularly when it comes to the sort of driving which is actually dangerous rather than a parking prang.

Most drivers think they're better than average (particularly men) - clearly this cannot be true.Grin

SpaceDinosaur · 13/03/2020 00:13

Tailgaters infuriate me.

If I am driving at the speed limit and you want to sniff my arse then darling I will slow down. I will fucking stop traffic until you stop presenting yourself as a hazard to my vehicle.

It rarely happens to me. The only times seem to be on the "back roads" which are single lane, national speed limit but full of hills, blind corners, farm vehicles and narrow areas.

There's a VERY popular hotel near me and slebs in their 4x4s seem to treat these roads behind the venue like they're for fun. I have happily pulled over at a farm entrance before now and, on one occasion passed the offending overtaking tailgating twat a mile up the road in a hedge.
They were fine. I checked and they had called for help. I then left them with the parting comment "and now you see that's why I wasn't driving like a twat. Stay safe"

I had someone tailgating me at 30 in a 30. I spotted an ambulance so signalled and pulled in, he obviously wasn't looking behind and thought I was pulling over for him. So he made to overtake me. Very narrowly avoided a crash with the speeding ambulance. Very scary.

This happened locally a few years ago. A car pulled over to let an ambulance past and the driver behind hadn’t seen the ambulance approaching and overtook the car that had pulled over. The ambulance driver and the patient in the back were both killed.

I recently passed my driving test and I had to drive down a very long and windy rural road which has a 60 limit. I drove down it at 35mph and got one minor for not going “a bit faster”. On this particular occasion I didn’t feel safe heading towards 40 or more, as I was taking my test in a heavy 4x4 with a long stopping distance and it was raining. On this particular route you are expected to go 35+ to pass.

Some roads are 60 when they shouldn’t be.

Osirus · 13/03/2020 00:52

Oh, no one tailgates you when you’re driving a big 4x4 with L plates on Grin

ivykaty44 · 13/03/2020 04:34

do pull over to the slower lane. The fast lane is for people who want to go FAST!

There is no slow or fast lane, they are overtaking lanes 🙄 Perhaps try reading the Highway Code especially around lane discipline

KatherineJaneway · 13/03/2020 06:48

The fast lane is for people who want to go FAST!

It's not called the fast lane you idiot 🤣

Vulpine · 13/03/2020 06:51

I've always thought there was a correlation between people who think they're better drivers than everyone else and road ragers, a kind of blinkered deluded arrogance.

DippyAvocado · 13/03/2020 06:57

Tailgaters are a scourge. Tough shit if the person in front is driving to slowly for you. You either have to put up with it or find a safe overtaking place. Tailgating causes accidents (and the insurance will put the tailgater at fault no matter what their excuses about the person in front going too slowly for them).

BootShakin · 13/03/2020 06:59

Fast lane, right lane, you know what I mean. And calling me an idiot LOL Grin

KatherineJaneway · 13/03/2020 07:03

Well you are LOL 🤣

I often get tailgated when I drive my small yellow car. I drive my DH's large black car in exactly the same way, speed etc and never get tailgated.

I had small cars (Micra, Nova) but then got a Cavalier. It was stunning how much better other people's driving suddenly became (especially White Van and Beamer men).HmmGrin

Hoggleludo · 13/03/2020 08:43

My mum lives in the forest. There’s also some dubious roads in West Sussex which are 60. But you can’t go faster than 30 down them.

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:04

The “fast lane” still has the same speed limit as the left hand lane.

I often find I’m tailgated if I go into the “fast lane” if I need to turn right. It’s also for right turns as well as overtaking so they can fuck off

I thought I might get this with my Toyota Yaris but it hasn't happened that much. When I had my dad's Honda Jazz though - completely different story!

Yes, it's always a balancing act between pulling out too early and not being able to get over at all. I was forced to go straight on in Reading a few weeks ago because a woman in an SUV refused to let me move over to the right hand lane I needed. So the next time I used that route, I moved out much earlier.

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:12

@cologne4711 I have that problem quite often.

I used to try not going over too early so that it didn’t piss overtakers off, I do agree that there is nothing more annoying than a dickhead driving along at 2mph in the overtaking lane.

But I find that if I leave it too late I can never get over at all and I can’t go the way I want to go

I swear some people here have never driven a national speed limit country road

Yes try some of the country lanes in Devon! In fact there's a great example on the A30/A303, I can't quite remember if it is before or after the two roads join before Honiton but there is a farm called Court Moor Farm close to it. At that point the speed limit on the main road is 50. To the right, if you are coming towards Exeter, there is a steep and narrow country lane - with a national speed limit sign on it! It's laughable that you could do 60 (or even 40) up there!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/03/2020 09:13

It’s not even every once in a while, there must be at least two times a day I’m tailgated
Twice a DAY, day in, day out?! And you still think you are the perfect driver?

you’re twisting my words yeah, it's annoying when that happens isn't it Wink

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:18

@BuzzShitbagBobbly nothing wrong with my driving so stop trying to provoke me please.

Like I said, tailgaters think speed limits don’t apply to them. All I ever do is stick to the limits or drive in accordance to hazards, I am not unnecessarily slow for no reason if I don’t need to be.

So that is the tailgaters problem. Hopefully one day they’ll crash and wreck their cars and that’ll teach them a lesson.

OP posts:
BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/03/2020 09:26

Well, I agree that some drivers are twats, but I don't wish any of them to crash, blimey!

People aren't trying to provoke you, we're logically pointing out that with the outrageous level of hassle only you seem to get, maybe it's not all everybody else's fault?

It's not a bad thing to take a second look at our own habits if we are continually in danger like you say, so I don't know why you are taking such offence to the concept. But hey, you do you and the rest of us will stay not being tailgated every single time we are behind the wheel.

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:30

@BuzzShitbagBobbly maybe a crash would knock them into reality!! Maybe that’s what it takes unfortunately?

I have already stated my driving is not perfect. I make mistakes all the time. I’ve had plenty of near misses. Just the other day I had a sneezing fit and I was drifting onto the wrong side of the road.

You are provoking me by saying I’m at fault if I won’t drive at 60 on a dangerous bendy road.

If that’s how you drive, then you’re not very safe

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 13/03/2020 09:31

Your driving is the problem.

Whenisithometime · 13/03/2020 09:32

Nah it’s really not. Give over. If tailgaters want to go faster they can overtake instead of sitting up my arse. I slow down if they do that

Some people on this thread scare the life out of me! Your attitudes are horrendous! Please do take the bus next time you need to go somewhere

I stand corrected re narrow country lanes - fair point.
