To be pissed off at DH who made me look a twat?

DH and I were going on a night out last night with his mate and his mates wife. He told me they were called Alan and Borgenstein. Obviously I questioned the wife’s name but he insisted she was Dutch and that was her actual name.

We got there and his mate did indeed refer to his wife as Borg so fair enough but DH whispered to me that she likes to be called her full name and only her hubby calls her Borg. So a while later I refer to her as her full name. Only that is not her real name at all. DH bursts out laughing and his mate punches him in the arm and calls him a twat. DH then explains its an in joke between the pair of them. His wife looked uncomfortable and I felt like an absolute twat. DH thinks I’m over reacting but I’m so annoyed. I struggle with social anxiety and this will play on my mind for months if not years.

Why is it funny to take the piss out of someone's name? Fine to take the piss out of your own name, but why someone else's, and also set someone else up to be the one who is being rude, why is that funny?

I wonder how many people on here who think it is hilarious were unwittingly bullies at school, if they think taking the piss out of someone is funny?

Olawisk · 07/03/2020 16:02

For all the people saying its hilariously funny- i bet they wouldnt feel that if they were in a different country and the locals were mocking their name and laughing about it

I really wouldn’t care because I have a sense of humour and can take a harmless joke

ineedaholidaynow · 07/03/2020 16:04

It's interesting on baby name threads that people will say you can't use certain names as children can be cruel and will make jokes out of the name. It appears that it isn't children that is the problem.

diddl · 07/03/2020 16:09

It's not just about mocking someone's name though.

If it was that then wouldn't the husband have done it himself?

CorianderLord · 07/03/2020 16:11

Bit annoying of him, am sure she loves him mocking her name

And are thick skinned and socially unaware.

crapette · 07/03/2020 16:15

WATF was her name then?

How many times????????

Her name is Borg which is likely to be short for Ingeborg or something very similar. It actually says in the OP that her partner was calling her Borg. The pathetic DH told his wife that the full name was Borgenstenn (a little bit like Frankenstein) and the OP used this name in good faith.

Laugh? I never started.

lesleyw1953 · 07/03/2020 16:18

Ask his mate's advice on his poor sexual prowess? Bet he finds that hilarious ...

This would probably seem funnier to me if I was a thirteen year old boy and all my mates thought it was funny as well.

Otherwise it sounds like a pretty stupid stunt tbh.

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/03/2020 17:13

It’s kind of pitiful when people defend laughing at this kind of shit as “having a sense of humour”.

PickAChew · 07/03/2020 17:17

It's not funny. It's bloody humiliating.

Not everyone finds racist jokes that humiliate people to be "harmless" HTH!

FrenchBoule · 07/03/2020 17:32

Your DH is an arsehole OP and so is his mate. Shame they decided to have fun at your and the friend’s wife expense.
I would be absolutely horrified and apologize profusely to the woman while giving “D”H bollocking of the year.

Yeah, its pathetic. I would imagine people who find this to be a hilarious "joke" probably havent developed much since age 12. Says alot about their "personality"

dorisdog · 07/03/2020 17:55

I would so bored by this kind of tedious 'joke.' I know the scenario exactly. If you don't laugh along, somehow it's you that doesn't have a sense of humour, right? Christ. So dull.

copperoliver · 07/03/2020 18:07

You should have just apologised to her and said I'm sorry I didn't realise these two had no social skills. X
