To be pissed off at DH who made me look a twat?

SlashsSnakePit · 07/03/2020 09:00

DH and I were going on a night out last night with his mate and his mates wife. He told me they were called Alan and Borgenstein. Obviously I questioned the wife’s name but he insisted she was Dutch and that was her actual name.

We got there and his mate did indeed refer to his wife as Borg so fair enough but DH whispered to me that she likes to be called her full name and only her hubby calls her Borg. So a while later I refer to her as her full name. Only that is not her real name at all. DH bursts out laughing and his mate punches him in the arm and calls him a twat. DH then explains its an in joke between the pair of them. His wife looked uncomfortable and I felt like an absolute twat. DH thinks I’m over reacting but I’m so annoyed. I struggle with social anxiety and this will play on my mind for months if not years.

OP posts:

Very unkind behaviour. Just remember, OP, that none of it reflects badly on you at all. Neither DH’s mate nor his wife seem to have found it funny, from your Op. probably because they realised you were hurt.

Chickychickydodah · 07/03/2020 14:34

I would have apologised to the wife and told her your husbands full name is “ Fuckwit Gobshite “ and for her to feel free to call him that anytime 🤣

HappentoHappen · 07/03/2020 14:34

@ravenmum There are plenty in their 40s here in Holland Smile

‘Borg’ is the word for a deposit (eg for rent) in Dutch so although there may well be people with that as their actual given name, there are probably not too many.

Halloweenbabyy · 07/03/2020 14:37

Lmfao that’s hilarious @StillCoughingandLaughing

Hotchocolate321 · 07/03/2020 14:39

I laughed, was I not supposed to? If my husband did that I’d call him an idiot and laugh too! Is the woman’s name actually Borg then or does her husband call her that for a joke too?

Sagradafamiliar · 07/03/2020 14:43

What's funny then? To the posters who say it's funny.
Is there a witty play on words that's gone right over my head or something?
To me it's just a piss take of the wife's name with 'enstein' randomly added onto the end of it and the 'hilariously' tricking the OP into thinking it was the real name. It's stupid.

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/03/2020 14:46

was I not supposed to?. You weren’t supposed to do anything, but if you find this sort of nonsense entertaining you have to accept what it says about your level of intellect.

ZZPer · 07/03/2020 14:51

Borg is undoubtedly a shortform for Ingeborg. Just like some Christinas, Martinas and Valentinas go by or are named Tina. Ingeborg is just a normal, slightly old-fashioned name in the Netherlands and in a number of other countries.

The Borgenstein nickname strikes me as Borg with the -enstein suffix from Frankenstein that is often used to say something is a monster, bit of a nightmare or looks ugly.

SunshineCake · 07/03/2020 14:58

I seriously doubt if MN is a laughingstock on the internet Hmm and even if it was, so what.

OP, your dh is a dick and if you have the wife's number I'd text an apology.

Daisier · 07/03/2020 15:00

When I meet dome for the first time I always introduce myself.

If she didn't do that then it's not your fault if you got it wrong. I'd find it funny though, and yes, I have terrible social anxiety too.

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/03/2020 15:02

She was introduced as her actual name, Daiser

HaddawayAndShite · 07/03/2020 15:03

It’s unfair to make his wife and you the butt of the joke when you don’t have that close relationship.

You should have pantsed him and exposed his teeny weeny peeny to the world. Immature yes. But Might have wiped the smile off his face Grin

ravenmum · 07/03/2020 15:06

Exactly, her name plus the end part of Frankenstein - either suggesting something monstruous, or just because it sounds Germanic - because her name is already "hilariously" Germanic/Nordic and they are exaggerating that even further.

The "funny" part people are presumably laughing about is OP's husband tricking her into seriously using this as Borg's actual name.
Which does have potential for humour if you ignore the underlying idea that a Germanic-sounding name is hilarious and that they are putting a foreigner on the spot about being different, while she is surrounded only by Brits.

Skittlesss · 07/03/2020 15:09

If they’re thinking along the lines of Frankenstein then the joke is on them - Frankenstein isn’t the monster, he’s the man who created the monster.

SnoozyLou · 07/03/2020 15:15

A joke only DH finds funny. The mark of an excellent comedian.

Tell him not to give up the day job.

But I wouldn't worry - they know it wasn't you.

user1492809438 · 07/03/2020 15:15

Are these grown men? Sound like immature children to me. Tell them that.

KatherineJaneway · 07/03/2020 15:17

I'm sorry but I actually think it's funny! Can't you all take a joke

But it isn't a joke. It is about the two men laughing at the humiliation of someone at their dinner table.

He's lucky he's not married to me, I'd have thrown my drink in his face and left.

shinyredbus · 07/03/2020 15:20

When you have social anxiety - it’s not a joke. And some people with social anxiety can’t just ‘laugh it off’ like some of you have mentioned/can. I get it OP. Sorry it’s happened. And I agree - this will play on your mind.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/03/2020 15:27

Only on mn is a badly thought out joke racist , abusive and worthy of a drink thrown in the face Confused

ineedaholidaynow · 07/03/2020 15:28

Has anyone who actually finds it funny explained why it is funny?

ShouldIcall · 07/03/2020 15:29

WATF was her name then?

VenusTiger · 07/03/2020 15:30

The wife will definitely think your DH and her DH are dicks @SlashsSnakePit - she wont think any less of you, especially how she saw things unfold after you'd said it.

IntergalacticSuperstar · 07/03/2020 15:33

The Borgenstein nickname strikes me as Borg with the -enstein suffix from Frankenstein that is often used to say something is a monster, bit of a nightmare or looks ugly.

That's how I took it too.

But it isn't a joke. It is about the two men laughing at the humiliation of someone at their dinner table.

One of their wives, no less.

iswhois · 07/03/2020 15:36

Sorry this has really tickled me but I would be really pissed off as well as your DH has effectively made you unknowingly take the piss out of someone's name to her face

So is her name actually Borg then?

Anotheruser02 · 07/03/2020 15:43

Oh that was a shitty thing to do. I hope it was a one off dick move and that isn't just him.

I had a hilarious brother who would do things like that, I don't are what anyone else would call it, it was and is bullying to set someone up like that. Particularly when they have social anxiety. I was shy and awkward all of my childhood, I really did think I was lesser like there was something embarrassing about being me that I couldn't put my finger on. About 2 years after I last saw that hilarious cunt I realised I'm as good as anyone and my confidence grew so much.
