To think the vet/RSPCA are BU and what do i do now?

Saturday afternoon person knocks on the door to say that they have seen my cat staggering into the back garden and they think its been hit by a car as its dragging its legs. Me and DSs go and hunt for the cat which we find but it turns out not to be ours. Its quite clearly got cat flu or the like as has green snot running out of its eyes and its nose is completely caked over. It also doesn't seem able to stand.

I ring the vets to say can I take it in to be told they don't have a stray cat account and so to ring the RSPCA to get a log number so they can see it and the RSPCA will pay for it. Done and we take the cat in.

The good news is that theres nothing wrong with its back end, it seems to be staggering because its got an ear infection as well as the cat flu. Vet can't keep cat in surgery because there is noone there on the Sunday, so its agreed it will come home with me until Monday and I am given some medication to give it Sun night / monday morning.

Its the cutest little thing and mega friendly but its not eating or drinking and I ring the emergency vet sunday night to ask advice as medication is to be given on a full stomach. They say not to give one lot of the medication and ring my surgery first thing Monday as originally planned.

I ring my vet this morning and am basically told there is nothing they are willing can do. They can't have it at the surgery as they have healthy cats in and no isolation room. They won't see it or give it any more treatment as the cover vet on Saturday did a lot and bill is already £150 and she has only ever known RSPCA to pay up to £80 so they already won't get paid whole amount so cant do more. She knows local cat charities are full and it will be difficult for any of them to take cat it. Suggests I ring RSPCA

I ring RSPCA and am basically told to release the cat back where I found it as emergency treatment has been completed. I point out this likely means the cat will die and am basically politely told tough crap. After falling out with the call handler, it has been agreed that she will pass a message onto someone higher up the chain and see if there is anything else that can be done but am told that the policy with strays is emergency treatment only and then release.

AIBU to think both the vet and the RSPCA are utter jerks and what can I do with it now. I don't really have the funds for any expensive treatment for her, but I could pay to have her PTS rather than leave her to a long lingering death outside but that just seems grim.

I'm so sorry she didn't make it. You gave her the best end-of-life possible though, which is a huge gift.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 04/03/2020 10:19

Bless little kitkat. And bless you for helping her.

PuppyMonkey · 04/03/2020 10:31

So sorry - OP you did all you could and thanks for trying.

Chaosdragon · 04/03/2020 10:40

Thanks everyone. Just feel a bit numb with it all today. She honestly looked so great earlier that evening and then such a massive deterioration in her in just a few hours. Cant help wondering with the what ifs. But as DS said this morning whilst sobbing into his cornflakes - I'm glad we had her for these days and loved her even though its ended with us upset rather than her be out there on her own and us not be upset. Hes a good un is DS.

Final photo of her with DS before we went the vets. We haven't had her back sadly but we are going to plant a flower for her in the beds where our other past pets are and a photo of her will be going up on the wall with the others.

Its odd really. I am far more a dog person than a cat person. Our existing cats are more for failing at rodent control than because I wanted them. But I am genuinely devastated about her which given I had her for only 3 days is madness.

I dont know how rescuers do it. Hats off them! I'm definitely not cut out for it!

So sorry to hear she didn't make it - but she was loved and cared for at the end - she came to you for a reason. Take care.

User56781234 · 04/03/2020 10:50

I'm so sorry to hear that she didn't make it. Thank you for everything that you did for her in her last few days. Flowers RIP kitcat.

AsAnActualWoman · 04/03/2020 10:53

Poor baby. She was happy with you, much better than being out in the cold.

Fluffybutter · 04/03/2020 10:57

Your ds is a credit to you .

BrightYellowDaffodil · 04/03/2020 11:10

I’m so sorry this didn’t have a happy ending but I hope you can find some solace in knowing that you did the right thing and in the last part of her life she knew comfort and care. You did absolutely right by her.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/03/2020 11:10

Maybe she knew that she was loved and that it was ok to go. You did a wonderful thing OP.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 04/03/2020 11:11

(And, just as an aside and based on several personal experiences with them with domestic, farm and wild animals, the RSPCA are absolute cunts and I wouldn’t spit on them if they were on fire.)

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 04/03/2020 11:19

Aww OP I'm so sorry she didn't make it. What a lovely thing your DS said too Thanks

FizzyGreenWater · 04/03/2020 11:27

You're a good egg, OP.

Bloody hell this has made me sad. Well done though OP, you really are a superstar.

Daffodil55 · 04/03/2020 13:19

Oh no. I was so hoping this would have a happy ending and have just now read the sad news. I don't do platitudes but if any comfort (and as others have said) at least she did not shiver and suffer out in the harsh weather.

I have had to say goodbye to a pet in the last year and it was the only option other than let him die at home utterly miserable.

The rainbow bridge has welcomed another beautiful animal. Flowers

PennyArcade · 04/03/2020 19:05

Thank you for trying OP. However, I don’t get why so many posters are blaming the RSPCA. I don’t, and will never support this charity, due to having called them out, several times. They didn’t bother responding 😥

However, if an animal runs into life threatening difficulty wouldn’t the first person responsible be the owner? The RSPCA are there, primarily, for those with no voice. Where are the owners of the cat in this case? It’s a poor pet owner who allows their beloved pet to succumb to dangerous territory 😥

adaline · 04/03/2020 19:24

Oh no, poor KitKat Sad

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 04/03/2020 19:44

If the cat isn’t chipped I’d honestly pay to have it pts. The poor thing is clearly suffering and quite likely dying a slow painful death, cat flu is highly contagious, it often kills and they remain carriers for life I believe if they survive and you have the welfare of your own cat to consider too.

Its clearly been lost a while as no decent owner would let it get into such a bad way.

@sparepantsandtoothbrush such a severe case of cat flu would indicate the cat is not vaccinated so even if it was insured it would not be covered for anything that could have been prevented by vaccination so the owners would still have to stump up a fortune for a cat that sounds highly unlike its going to make it. Chances are if its not eating and drinking it will have died a painful death before anyone is even located. She putting the welfare of the animal first.

Kirkman · 04/03/2020 19:45

@GlitteryUnicornSparkles you might want to read the update.

BabbleBee · 04/03/2020 20:07

So sorry that you didn’t get a happy ending, but thank you for taking so much time and care with her. Not many people would do that. Run free at rainbow bridge little kitkat Flowers

Mrsnippycat · 04/03/2020 20:12

Thank you OP, and OP's DS, for caring for her and giving her so much love.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 04/03/2020 20:25

@Kirkman I posted before reading the rest!
Thats so sad.

OP you did your best and at least she died being loved.

Starlight2223 · 04/03/2020 20:27

I'm so very sorry OP. Poor little puss. Sad You did a very good thing in making her feel cared for and giving her the best chance she could have had at that stage. I'm sorry if I've missed any other part of your update but if you are still out of pocket I would be glad to help in some small way?

TinyTimsCrutch · 04/03/2020 20:27

Oh this is so sad. Well done to you for making her last days loved and warm, isn’t that what we all want when our time has come xx

bobstersmum · 04/03/2020 20:36

Op, you did a selfless caring thing and you can be proud, poor cat is in a better place now, at least they had love and care at the end Flowers
