To think the vet/RSPCA are BU and what do i do now?

Saturday afternoon person knocks on the door to say that they have seen my cat staggering into the back garden and they think its been hit by a car as its dragging its legs. Me and DSs go and hunt for the cat which we find but it turns out not to be ours. Its quite clearly got cat flu or the like as has green snot running out of its eyes and its nose is completely caked over. It also doesn't seem able to stand.

I ring the vets to say can I take it in to be told they don't have a stray cat account and so to ring the RSPCA to get a log number so they can see it and the RSPCA will pay for it. Done and we take the cat in.

The good news is that theres nothing wrong with its back end, it seems to be staggering because its got an ear infection as well as the cat flu. Vet can't keep cat in surgery because there is noone there on the Sunday, so its agreed it will come home with me until Monday and I am given some medication to give it Sun night / monday morning.

Its the cutest little thing and mega friendly but its not eating or drinking and I ring the emergency vet sunday night to ask advice as medication is to be given on a full stomach. They say not to give one lot of the medication and ring my surgery first thing Monday as originally planned.

I ring my vet this morning and am basically told there is nothing they are willing can do. They can't have it at the surgery as they have healthy cats in and no isolation room. They won't see it or give it any more treatment as the cover vet on Saturday did a lot and bill is already £150 and she has only ever known RSPCA to pay up to £80 so they already won't get paid whole amount so cant do more. She knows local cat charities are full and it will be difficult for any of them to take cat it. Suggests I ring RSPCA

I ring RSPCA and am basically told to release the cat back where I found it as emergency treatment has been completed. I point out this likely means the cat will die and am basically politely told tough crap. After falling out with the call handler, it has been agreed that she will pass a message onto someone higher up the chain and see if there is anything else that can be done but am told that the policy with strays is emergency treatment only and then release.

AIBU to think both the vet and the RSPCA are utter jerks and what can I do with it now. I don't really have the funds for any expensive treatment for her, but I could pay to have her PTS rather than leave her to a long lingering death outside but that just seems grim.

Sounds promising. Fingers crossed. If she doesn't start to eat, can I suggest you try some raw mince, any kind?

Cats can be notoriously fussy eaters even when you'd think they would be grateful for any food on offer but sometimes it seems they'd rather starve than eat something not to their taste, but raw mince usually gets them eating, also whatever you give her, make sure it is room temperature not fridge cold, sit it over hot water for a few minutes if necessary. I've sometimes offered half a dozen different fancy things to a poorly cat that I'm desperate to get eating only to find they go off and eat the chewed up leftovers out of my own cats bowls Grin.

In a minority of cases some cats only eat dry food so maybe try some of that as well?

BarbaraofSeville · 03/03/2020 18:37

What format is the antibiotics in? If it's liquid or powder in a capsule a good way to give it is to mix the drugs into lick e lix, which if you're not aware is tubes of creamy treaty deliciousness available in the cat treats bit of the supermarket.

Drivemybluecar · 03/03/2020 18:38

How is the cat doing now op.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 03/03/2020 18:40

that's great news that she is doing better. Does she have a name OP? She looks like a 'Lucky' to me

Chaosdragon · 03/03/2020 18:49

Forgot the obligatory photo of her! Her head is obviously still all wonky but her eyes seem brighter and clearer. At least I think so anyway. It's hard to tell.

Shes on synolux tablets. Little pink ones. I just open her mouth and put it at the back of her throat and she swallows them atm. I tried her with sausage (how I feed medication to the dogs) but she made a horrible grinding noise I presume from her teeth and retched so I gave that up.

Shes only had about 1/8 of a pack of food today and then started thrashing about like a twit so I've stopped and will feed her a bit more in a few hours.

Oh bless her 😻

Thanks OP, you're a star ⭐️

violetbunny · 03/03/2020 18:54

Perhaps try her on some cat soups? I find they're good when trying to get more fluids into ours when they are poorly. They're not a complete food but something at least.

Well done for saving her. Have you picked a name for your new master?

myusernamewastakenbyme · 03/03/2020 19:02

Well done Op....Ive got everything crossed for that little cat x

Itwasntme1 · 03/03/2020 19:03

Sorry of this has been suggested, but have your tried cat milk?

When my cat is sick she will always take cat milk, and he weebox yoghurts. They look gross but she absolutely loves them, will even take pills ground up in them.

£1 for a pack of 6 in tescos.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/03/2020 19:22

Have you tried pate?

That's how I get tablets down my fat greedy bastards cats.

Meadowland · 03/03/2020 19:26

@chaosdragon. Sorry to have hijacked the thread with my rant about the useless RSPCA.
You are a star for what you are doing for this little sweetie. As a pp said, if it is costing lots of money, I would be happy to donate on a crowdfunding page too.

TinyTimsCrutch · 03/03/2020 19:27

Sounds like you are doing a great job. Did the vet advise if your own cat could get infected from her?

TeaChocKitKat · 03/03/2020 19:35

You can get cheap frozen packets of coley/ cheap generic white fish from most supermarkets. Do you think she might eat a small portion? Whenever I've had to get tablets down my cats ive mixed them with a bit of fish and they've eaten every last scrap.
The poor thing. I'm so glad she was found by someone like you and not left to suffer and die outside x

longtimelurkerhelen · 03/03/2020 20:27

Glad she is still doing well. Some great suggestions. If you have fish fingers try one of them, take off the outside first. I also recommend the pate, if she wont eat it, try smearing a bit of it on her paw, she will lick it off or flick it all over your house. I wouldn't give her cat milk yet if she still has a dicky tummy.

Throckmorton · 03/03/2020 20:32

She is absolutely gorgeous, and you are a star for looking after her.

Jojo19834 · 03/03/2020 20:33

Well done you, please keep us updated. She is such a cutie!

Somanysocks · 03/03/2020 20:37

I need more pictures and updates, and I'm not even a cat person. Smile

Doggyperson · 03/03/2020 20:42

So glad she's doing ok. The greeting with a miaww is a good sign, she's yours now you know Grin bless her.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/03/2020 20:51

So pleased to see an update, OP, and glad she’s doing a bit better. ❤️

Notimeforaname · 03/03/2020 20:52

I'm late to this thread but you're a lovely person OP.
I was frantically clicking through the thread to see if she was still soldiering on.

Relieved to see she is.
Please keep updating! These photos are adorable.

QuestionableMouse · 03/03/2020 22:36

What are you feeding her?

The pate in the small gold tins is good because you can mix it to a slurry with some hot water and feed it by syringe.

Or mother and babycat food by royal canin. They do a wet or dry that you can soak. It's not cheap but it's good stuff.

Chaosdragon · 03/03/2020 23:49

Little kitkat has not made it.

She was fitting when I went up to feed her before bed and having gone to the emergency vets they felt there was nothing to be done for her.

Absolutely heartbroken and have no words.

Run free of pain little kitkat

Pooor little angel, at least she's not in pain anymore bless her. You did an amazing job with her OP and I'm sure she'll have been so grateful to have spent her last day safe, loved and warm. Run free little one X

DangerFrog · 03/03/2020 23:57
Sad So sorry to hear that. You did everything you could for her and gave her a chance that she wouldn't otherwise have had.

Run free little KitKat.
