To think the vet/RSPCA are BU and what do i do now?

Saturday afternoon person knocks on the door to say that they have seen my cat staggering into the back garden and they think its been hit by a car as its dragging its legs. Me and DSs go and hunt for the cat which we find but it turns out not to be ours. Its quite clearly got cat flu or the like as has green snot running out of its eyes and its nose is completely caked over. It also doesn't seem able to stand.

I ring the vets to say can I take it in to be told they don't have a stray cat account and so to ring the RSPCA to get a log number so they can see it and the RSPCA will pay for it. Done and we take the cat in.

The good news is that theres nothing wrong with its back end, it seems to be staggering because its got an ear infection as well as the cat flu. Vet can't keep cat in surgery because there is noone there on the Sunday, so its agreed it will come home with me until Monday and I am given some medication to give it Sun night / monday morning.

Its the cutest little thing and mega friendly but its not eating or drinking and I ring the emergency vet sunday night to ask advice as medication is to be given on a full stomach. They say not to give one lot of the medication and ring my surgery first thing Monday as originally planned.

I ring my vet this morning and am basically told there is nothing they are willing can do. They can't have it at the surgery as they have healthy cats in and no isolation room. They won't see it or give it any more treatment as the cover vet on Saturday did a lot and bill is already £150 and she has only ever known RSPCA to pay up to £80 so they already won't get paid whole amount so cant do more. She knows local cat charities are full and it will be difficult for any of them to take cat it. Suggests I ring RSPCA

I ring RSPCA and am basically told to release the cat back where I found it as emergency treatment has been completed. I point out this likely means the cat will die and am basically politely told tough crap. After falling out with the call handler, it has been agreed that she will pass a message onto someone higher up the chain and see if there is anything else that can be done but am told that the policy with strays is emergency treatment only and then release.

AIBU to think both the vet and the RSPCA are utter jerks and what can I do with it now. I don't really have the funds for any expensive treatment for her, but I could pay to have her PTS rather than leave her to a long lingering death outside but that just seems grim.

I voted YABU because you’ve already got £150 free treatment for a stray cat. Cat flu is a virus so there are no drugs to fight it. The cats immune system has to fight it. At this point it’s either release or pay for the cat yourself, which I have done for many strays in my life. Even one hit by a car driving in front of me.
If you cared about the cat as much as you say, you’d also pay something towards it’s treatment. It seems you don’t care enough to pay a penny to help it but think RSPCA and the vet are BU for only having spent £150 on the cat. By that measure you are BU more than they are as you haven’t paid for any medical treatment yet.

Oh bless she looks like my old childhood cat Rana.

She was originally a stray too.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/03/2020 19:57

Oh she is lovely. I can see from her head tilt that she has an ear infection. Is she on antibiotics ? My feeling is that she has been a stray for a while, after being a pet, and hasn’t managed to fend for herself, so has starved and fallen victim to a nasty infection.
Small amounts of food and fluid, at regular intervals. You can get a recipe for rehydration fluid online I think. My friend saved her cat, who had got lost and been trapped by giving regular small amounts of fluid, and then tiny spoonfuls of food.
Bless you OP for looking after her like this, what a sweet little cat.

moggle · 02/03/2020 19:59

Aw the cat looks a sweetie. Would it be cruel to name her Noddy?
I’m another with a bad experience of the RSPCA, rang them when we had a young deer in our suburban garden, it had jumped a fence from the golf course behind but due to the layout of our garden couldn’t get back over the side (suspect it got spooked to jump so high anyway). They said they couldn’t help and advised me to let it out of our side gate... I said we were right on a busy road, they said, wait til rush hours over then. I mean WTF! In the end I gathered my courage and ran out into the garden which spooked it enough to go back over where it had came from.
The next morning we woke up to TWO young deer in our back garden. Honestly. I just left them to it that time.

Itsseweasy · 02/03/2020 20:17

You’re a good person OP, thank you for caring.
If things do take a bad turn, I highly recommend contacting a local smaller animal rescue for help. They have always been far more concerned/caring in my experience of previous animal-saving efforts.
Good luck OP, I really hope she improves and ends up staying with you.

tttigress · 02/03/2020 20:23

I think the RSPCA have turned into a political pressure group now, rather than doing the job they were originally set up for.

mightyminty · 02/03/2020 20:29

Agree RSPCA that are total cunts. Took in an injured stray and my vet was brilliant but RSPCA were completely heartless. Ended up taking him in and treating him myself. Lovely boy living the life of riley now. Would never donate again!!!

Chaosdragon · 02/03/2020 20:39

I think she looks contented but I could be imagining it!

Have fed her again and I think it went a bit better this time. Shes actually licked the juice from the syringe rather than me having to stuff it down her and after that and a cuddle she got up and took herself off for a good drink of water. She had a sniff at the juice left in the bowl but didnt lick any. She seems a bit more interested in her surroundings anyway. I'm working tomorrow so shell be on her own from 8 until 4 which is a bit worrying but I'm hoping to get a couple of feeds in her before I go and then do some when I get back. I've got antibiotics (synulux) for her until Friday morning so hopefully shell have thrown off the worse of it by then!

To think the vet/RSPCA are BU and what do i do now?

Off on a bit of a tangent but the RSPB don’t help either with injured birds which I found when an injured seagull was in distress in our garden.
Looked for a contact number on their site, which said they didn’t deal with injured birds and to take them to a local vet, which we did.
Poor thing had a badly broken wing and the vet had to PITS.

Flutteringsatlast · 02/03/2020 20:42

Is she purring a lot op? Ime they do when in pain as well as when being extremely loved!

FinnegansWhiskers · 02/03/2020 20:45

Put out a fb plea .... that’s what happens here. Don’t expect the owner to reply tho. Cat owners seem to get a pet, throw it out and expect the neighbours to raise it - especially if it’s run up vet bills 🤬

Chaosdragon · 02/03/2020 20:47

Yikes yes she is although only when she climbs on my knee? Not when shes lying by herself. Hmmm perhaps moving to me is hurting her. I've got some metacam which is the pain killer but she cant have that unless she has a full stomach which currently is very doubtful ...

Doggyperson · 02/03/2020 20:48

Aww bless her. Yes they do purr a lot when in pain also. Whenever I've had poorly cats they always found a place to hide (normally under a bed)

Hoping for a good outcome. Please keep us updated.

Doggyperson · 02/03/2020 20:50

If she's purring when she's on your knee and not alone, I'd say she's happy to be having cuddles with you.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 02/03/2020 20:50

She is a beauty!

Depending on where is staffs you are, there are pdsa vets and shelters nr bromsgrove and Derby so if you get very stuck they may help.. I know not staffs but potentially localish

And I will happily donate to a gofundme campaign for her

MetallicPaints · 02/03/2020 21:04

Oh OP what a lovely person you are and what a lucky puss. I would like to help with vets fees, please PM me if you set up a fundraiser.

Starlight2223 · 02/03/2020 21:06

Forget your starving twins, 47p until payday found down the back of the sofa and only half a tin of beans in the cupboard. If you want mn-ers to offer cash then go for injured animals.

Well, the OP has taken responsibility for a creature purely out of the goodness of her heart, because no one else could/would do so. And no one would suggest the hypothetical starving twins were PTS!

Starlight2223 · 02/03/2020 21:06

OP, she's lovely and so are you (and the offer to help if you set something up still stands).

Jaxhog · 02/03/2020 21:19

Don't assume she's local. Cats can hitch a ride with lorries and cars, or she may have been dumped. Hard to believe, I know. We acquired our first cat this way, although he was much younger. He lived with us for 12 years. We never found out where he had come from.

I'm surprised the RSPCA wasn't more helpful. We've adopted 2 cats from them over the years. I hope that Cats Protection will help. They're usually pretty good. Good luck!

LoadOfOldTosh · 02/03/2020 21:25

Your new little friend is beautiful and I hope she is on the mend soon. You are such a lovely person to take so much care of her and I really hope that she can stay with you - thank you so much for being such a kind rescuer to her 💐💐. And I'd be happy to chip in to a Gofundme too 🐈👍

AnneJeanne · 02/03/2020 21:45

Aw she’s lovely. It’s a great sign that she’s drinking some water. Is there anyone who can check on her tomorrow mid-day?

AnneJeanne · 02/03/2020 21:45

Also offering to help!

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 02/03/2020 21:51

Oh she’s lovely. Keep giving her syringes - it is the biggest thing that will give her the best chance (that’s what the vet told me with my very sick flu ridden kitten)

longtimelurkerhelen · 02/03/2020 22:04

You could get some oralade from vets or amazon is cheaper I think. It's great for rehydration. Also put her water bowl well away from her food bowl as cats don't like drinking water near their food.

It's great that you are taking care of her. I also got adopted by a stray. Grin that also cost a small fortune

longtimelurkerhelen · 02/03/2020 22:04

Sorry just looked, amazon out of stock. this site has it.
