Saturday afternoon person knocks on the door to say that they have seen my cat staggering into the back garden and they think its been hit by a car as its dragging its legs. Me and DSs go and hunt for the cat which we find but it turns out not to be ours. Its quite clearly got cat flu or the like as has green snot running out of its eyes and its nose is completely caked over. It also doesn't seem able to stand.

I ring the vets to say can I take it in to be told they don't have a stray cat account and so to ring the RSPCA to get a log number so they can see it and the RSPCA will pay for it. Done and we take the cat in.

The good news is that theres nothing wrong with its back end, it seems to be staggering because its got an ear infection as well as the cat flu. Vet can't keep cat in surgery because there is noone there on the Sunday, so its agreed it will come home with me until Monday and I am given some medication to give it Sun night / monday morning.

Its the cutest little thing and mega friendly but its not eating or drinking and I ring the emergency vet sunday night to ask advice as medication is to be given on a full stomach. They say not to give one lot of the medication and ring my surgery first thing Monday as originally planned.

I ring my vet this morning and am basically told there is nothing they are willing can do. They can't have it at the surgery as they have healthy cats in and no isolation room. They won't see it or give it any more treatment as the cover vet on Saturday did a lot and bill is already £150 and she has only ever known RSPCA to pay up to £80 so they already won't get paid whole amount so cant do more. She knows local cat charities are full and it will be difficult for any of them to take cat it. Suggests I ring RSPCA

I ring RSPCA and am basically told to release the cat back where I found it as emergency treatment has been completed. I point out this likely means the cat will die and am basically politely told tough crap. After falling out with the call handler, it has been agreed that she will pass a message onto someone higher up the chain and see if there is anything else that can be done but am told that the policy with strays is emergency treatment only and then release.

AIBU to think both the vet and the RSPCA are utter jerks and what can I do with it now. I don't really have the funds for any expensive treatment for her, but I could pay to have her PTS rather than leave her to a long lingering death outside but that just seems grim.

Congratulations on your new dcat op....
Can you have a family whip round and take it on if it isn't chipped?
*obviously fb pics /lost and found etc first. Gofundme page?

n00bMaster69 · 02/03/2020 14:10

I agree she's probably been dumped, it's sadly not uncommon.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 02/03/2020 14:13

She could have been deliberately driven some mikes and then dumped. Seeing as she is friendly it is extremely unlikely that she’s been a stray for all her life

littlealexhorne · 02/03/2020 14:14

Have they scanned her for a microchip?

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 02/03/2020 14:14

RSPCA are notoriously useless- can you set up a Go Fund Me on Facebook and ask people for donations. There’s a hell of a lot of kind people out there who would move heaven and earth to help a poorly cat.

littlealexhorne · 02/03/2020 14:15

Sorry just seen your update

Straycatstrut · 02/03/2020 14:15

She could have been deliberately driven some mikes and then dumped.

One of the saddest things I've ever read Sad

How can people live with themselves after?

jessycake · 02/03/2020 14:16

The RSPCA are useless unless the cat was being featured on a tv programme and they don't care about their staff much either

Flutteringsatlast · 02/03/2020 14:21

Years ago my dm worked for a man who hated dcats - used to trap them and drive them miles away and release them...
Twat...
I was a dc and it haunted me.
More so why did she bloody tell me?
Gofundme op and I will stick a fiver in...

FizzyGreenWater · 02/03/2020 14:26

The RSPCA are awful. I would never donate to them or have anything to do with them.

Actual charity towards animals has long come way down their business goals list I have found.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 02/03/2020 14:28

Poor cat. The fact she doesn’t have a microchip suggests she isn’t from a caring home anyway. I’m sure the cat protection league would take her. We got out cat from them - he’d been dumped on their doorstep and was skinny and nervous. He’s around 15 now and going strong!

BearSoFair · 02/03/2020 14:35

RSPCA are awful, years ago we found a tiny scrawny filthy kitten trembling in the gutter, rang them and they said they'd send someone to collect it "if we get any spare time" Shock I told them not to bother, I'd take it to the local vet myself. No chip, vet thought he was just weak so we took him home over the weekend and he kept trembling on and off, in the end the vet discovered he had a brain tumour and the trembling were seizures...I cried as if he was our family pet when he said that PTS was the kindest thing to do.

Kirkman · 02/03/2020 14:35

I called RSPCA because a neighbour had a giant breed that she never walked (she told everyone she couldnt be arsed) she did take it about 200ft to some grass to poo and used to beat it if it didnt go straight away. When it was trying to wonder round and sniff, she would physically wrestle to the ground.

The RSPCA told me a dog mot getting walks wasnt classed as cruelty and the beating and wrestling could easily just be training. I was so appalled by it. I wont ever donate to them again.

They genuinely dont seem to give a shit unless it's a photo op.

Starlight2223 · 02/03/2020 14:36

If you do a Gofundme page and publicise it here I will be pleased to contribute - I don't do Facebook.

Fluffybutter · 02/03/2020 14:38

Definitely put a post on your local Facebook page .
We have some absolute angels locally who really care about the local strays and do what ever they can to help

ClientQueen · 02/03/2020 14:40

If you're in Manchester or Lancashire I have some contacts

GrolliffetheDragon · 02/03/2020 14:41

You can't have it PTS if it belongs to someone! One of my cats rarely comes home any more but if he was unwell and someone else had had him PTS I would be furious with you as he's insured!

I had to have a stray PTS. I had no idea where he was from as he wasn't local and the vet didn't recognise him. He was in a bad way from cancer, suffering terribly. What else could I do? It was way past the point where any treatment was going to make a difference.

To the OP, do you have a PDSA near you? They usually only treat pets where the owners are on certain benefits, but there may be some flexibility in the circumstances?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/03/2020 14:45

I am also happy to contribute to any funding page set up - also not on Facebook.

My fat cat will currently be snoozing on her heated throw, and I would hope someone would help her if she ever was in trouble. (She is chipped though.)

JillAmanda · 02/03/2020 14:45

Yep. They’re jerks. The RSPCA more so.

If there’s a tv crew around they’ll spend two hours giving mouth to mouth to a pigeon. Otherwise they’re not interested.

ThatLibraryMiss · 02/03/2020 14:45

OP, you might be able to find a local cat charity from the Cat Rescue & Adoption Centres page of CatChat, here. Or post in the Found Cat section and see if you get any advice.

Honeyroar · 02/03/2020 14:46

I’d be heartbroken if my cats were pts because someone thought they were a stray too - that’s why they have up to date microchips so hopefully a vet would scan and contact us.

OP well done on trying to help this little cat.

mouldyoldonkey · 02/03/2020 14:47

If she isn’t microchipped she is most likely a stray. It is the law now to microchip cats so unfortunately if she does have an owner they will have learnt a harsh lesson.

I work with animals (though not in a veterinary capacity) and sometimes PTS really is the kind thing to do. If you can’t find anyone to take her in, and can’t afford treatment yourself, then unfortunately PTS may be the only way to stop her dying in pain, and you should not feel guilty for thatFlowers

Good luck with Cat’s Protection, hopefully they can do something. RSPCA are so inundated with cases there isn’t always something they can do, unfortunately.

yelyah22 · 02/03/2020 14:48

Poor girl :( I'd contribute to a gofundme for her too!

Joanna1232 · 02/03/2020 14:50

When I was a child we had cats. When we moved house one cat would keep walking miles back to the old house. Is it possible in your area someone has moved and that is what the cat has done. Would hate to think someone loves him and is looking for him.

CrossMyBoundariesAtYourPeril · 02/03/2020 14:52

The RSPCA are terrible - similar thing happened years ago - they wouldn't come out to a clearly poorly cat that evening and told me to keep it outside as I had cats of my own. I refused as it was winter. Took her to the emergency vet that covered for my own vet, and they treated her for free for a couple of days. Unfortunately they could not save her but I was able to see her before she was PTS for a last cuddle. That vet was brilliant.
