To ask you how you found your 'Signature Scent'?

I have tried many different perfumes - my current fragrances include Opium, Obsession, Bulgari Jasmine Noir (a favourite), Philosophy Magnolia & Amazing Grace, Liz Earle No. 9 & No. 20, Dior Coco but I still haven't found a special scent. i like musky/spicy/patouli/ types best - what are your favourites, can anyone recommend something a bit more unusual that might be lovely to have as a 'Signature Scent', that doesn't cost the earth?

My husband found it for me. He actually found something that I love and that many people have complimented me on (including a colleague who sniffs me but I choose to take that as a compliment).

cunningartificer · 19/02/2020 18:48

If you like opium and coco, as I do, but want something of a similar type that’s less musky for the day (I usually wear them going out so they always make me feel sexy) you might like Estée Lauder Private Collection. I smelt it on someone else and it took me ages to track down as not a brand I usually go for—but it’s gorgeous! I always get compliments when I wear it.

mnthrowaway202020 · 19/02/2020 18:48

I don’t have one but I have a large/expensive perfume collection. It’s like having a wardrobe almost - a different scent for varying occasions/time of year etc. I don’t have a specific go to - I just prefer wearing different fragrances dependant on what I’m doing.

I just think whichever fragrance you wear for an extended time becomes your signature scent as people will associate it with you. I think certain scents are outdated and too common eg flowerbomb, coco mademoiselle, la vie etc. By that I mean that so many members of the general public wear these scents to the point that no one will be able to decipher the smell on you, so you won’t stand out.

Branleuse · 19/02/2020 18:49

I have loads of perfumes that I absolutely love, but none of them are signature scents as they dont all suit me all year round. I dont think most people have a signature scent

IfNot · 19/02/2020 18:50

I love Portrait of a Lady too but it's soooo expensive! I can't smell Stella at all.
It's not spicy, but Geurlain Idylle is a nice musky patchouli.
I don't have a signature but I have certain notes I love, and my perfumes tend to have some vanilla and/or some amber, and I can't stand violet, so they have similarities with one another.
At the moment I'm wearing Nina Ricci L'Extase Rose Absolue, which is a sort if incensey caramel rose. You might like it!

teddyclown · 19/02/2020 18:51

Caleche by Hermes. Have worn it on and off since the early 80's - it's become so expensive now though. My son bought me a bottle for Christmas :-)

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/02/2020 18:52

@LaurieFairyCake what does carnal flower smell like?

foodiefil · 19/02/2020 18:53

Ooh I have lots !

I have different ones for different times of days and seasons.

Day wear: lots of Jo Malone - my mam usually buys my the new one for my birthday as it's just come out so I have Poppy & Barley, Honeysuckle and Davana from the last couple of years that I spritz on during the day/for work.

I also really like pomegranate noir and I recently bought blue agave and cacao on a whim and I'm so glad I did because it smells so different and quite spicy / musky but is only available online as it's discontinued.

Evening: white patchouli by Tom Ford (you might like this), coco by chanel, jasmine and sambac Jo M.

I also got Jo M grapefruit in a small Christmas gift and that is so nice and fresh.

On the look out for a wedding fragrance and going to check out Byredo.

Previous "signature" scents have been babydoll by YSL, coco mademoiselle by chanel, spring flower by creed and peony blush & suede by Jo Malone.

@Latemumma

Sorry, don’t know how to link your post?

You may want to try Lidl essence d’elle. It’s a pink bottle. These are available now due to Valentine’s Day. It’s apparently a dupe for your favourite. And only £4.99. I got myself a bottle and it’s fab, sort of a weaker opium type scent.

heath48 · 19/02/2020 18:54

I love perfume,have a lot.

I love Mitsouko by Guerlain,my special perfume, have loved it for about 30years.

foodiefil · 19/02/2020 18:54

@curious I LOVE Allure you've reminded me of it

PetitsGateaux · 19/02/2020 18:55

I dislike very flowery perfumes; I mostly wear Brit by Burberry, Innocent by Thierry Mugler or my favourite for the evening, Organza Indécence by Givenchy...

Head: Cinnamon, Mandarin
Heart: Jacaranda Wood, Plum
Base: Amber, Patchouli

Fifilafrog · 19/02/2020 18:55

I think a "signature scent" is not something you are aware of. I used to wear Gio by Giorgio Armani until it was discontinued (devastating!! 😫). People often used to tell me that they had smelled it on someone else and they instantly thought of me. Now, because I can't lay my hands on it anymore, I have a vast collection of gorgeous perfumes but nothing quite compares ☹️.

ArbitraryNameChange · 19/02/2020 18:56

I bought a bottle of Chanel No 5 when I was 13 in duty free 'because I wanted one'

Luckily it suited me and I've worn it ever since (44 years....)

Maxamill · 19/02/2020 18:57

I struggled with a scent could never settle on a perfume until I found Carolina Herrera good girl

Smells sensational!

BluntAndToThePoint80 · 19/02/2020 18:59

I love Santal Blush by Tom Ford But they keep whacking up the price !

Also the original Chanel ones.

I actually was give a perfume review/guide book for Xmas one year written by two perfumers and they review, rate and describe loads of Perfumes which is handy for learning why you like certain ones and gives recommendations for similar ones - it’s a bit old now do mine doesn’t have all the newer ones in, but all the classics are there.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/02/2020 18:59

@Fifilafrog I loved Gio too I had a massive bottle years ago.I think you can get it on Amazon sometimes but for a lot more money

Toria70 · 19/02/2020 19:02

Daytimes I tend to go for Joy by Dior, or Dior Addict (the pink one) and Estee Lauder Modern Muse.

Evenings - I love Black Opium by YSL, Thierry Mugler Angel Muse (the new one) and Dior Addict (the blue one).

I have just ordered a load of testers from Miller Harris but hated them all - the scent seemed to disappear into my skin very quickly. And I can't wear anything by Jo Malone without getting a blinding headache.

Jayaywhynot · 19/02/2020 19:04

Alien Thierry Mugler

millimollimandi · 19/02/2020 19:04

I don't ever wear perfume - haven't since I was about 17 and wore Charlie occasionally, in the 70s. Am I weird?

PetitsGateaux · 19/02/2020 19:08

For the Summer, I love Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca - smells like freshly-cut grass and mint!

foodiefil · 19/02/2020 19:12

No you're you @millimollimandi just maybe on the wrong thread 😂 x

Auridon4life · 19/02/2020 19:12

So exclusive but they've discontinued it

Spied · 19/02/2020 19:17

Wore Angel for many years. Fell in love in the perfume department of a posh department store while I was at at Uni and just had to have it.
Last couple of years it seems to smell different on me so I have stopped wearing it. Even tried different bottles thinking mine had gone off- but no.
I have a few perfumes on the go at the moment ( Chopard Wish, Dior Dune, Paul Smith Rose, Cerutti 1881 and Paco Rabanne Ultraviolet) but these are ones I've also used sporadically in the past and none I would class as a 'signature'.

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 19/02/2020 19:20

I don't have just one, but if you held a gun to my head I'd say Bottega Veneta with Bois D'iris by Van Cleef and Arpels a close second.
