I have tried many different perfumes - my current fragrances include Opium, Obsession, Bulgari Jasmine Noir (a favourite), Philosophy Magnolia & Amazing Grace, Liz Earle No. 9 & No. 20, Dior Coco but I still haven't found a special scent. i like musky/spicy/patouli/ types best - what are your favourites, can anyone recommend something a bit more unusual that might be lovely to have as a 'Signature Scent', that doesn't cost the earth?

Gucci guilty is the one I reach for the most. Also love Chloe as it reminds me of my wedding day

"I tend to be of the opinion that people who think they have a 'signature scent' are just a wee bit up themselves"

I have fond memories of now gone relatives, whose signature scents, I could still name. I sniff the testers of the scents that are still around and it brings them back to life.

Make the most of perfume, your choices become so limited post menopause.

Tom Ford Velvet Orchid in winter, Soleil Blanc in summer at the moment, but I have changed in taste over the years. I wear anything cheap for work :)

TheQueenBeyondTheWall · 19/02/2020 20:56

@Livy178

My daughter picked this in home and bargain last month and it smells very much like zadig and Voltaire which I also like.

It was £1!

At the minute I'm wearing L'Interdit by Givenchy. I don't think I've ever liked a perfume so much.

I'm also wearing Good Girl and J'adore.

This thread is taking me back to a time (early 80s) when I spent far too much of my grant in a tiny independent perfume shop in Southampton!
@3rdchristmaslucky - I admired Narcisso Rodriguez on a friend. She gave me a sample of it to try but my husband told me it smelled (on me) like old ladies!

dudsville · 19/02/2020 21:02

I found mine by chance. I was given a bottle of perfume when i was in my early 20's. When it ran out i tried others in that range, found "mine" by mid to late 20s. I've tried others now and then but i always come back to it. After nearly 30 years it just smells like me. I don't notice it anymore except for when i take a bath. I wear one spray on my chest and when i heat up in the bath it wafts up and i remember why i love it.

Same here. My mum loved Estée Lauder White Linen, I have a bottle now which I never wear but sniff when the missing is really painful.

FizzyIce · 19/02/2020 21:20

I have a favourite ’type’ of scent but I rarely buy the same one twice .
I have about 20 odd different ones at the moment Blush and my dh is really good at picking ones for me .
My new favourites atm are La Belle by Jean Paul Gaultier and Kenzo world

willdoitinaminute · 19/02/2020 21:22

I love Coco Chanel and have worn it since it was first released. It’s the only perfume I’ve worn where men make a point of telling me how nice I smell. My husband loves it and buys me a bottle every year for Xmas. Now I’m older I wear it every day.

IfNot · 19/02/2020 21:22

Why though?Confused

FizzyIce · 19/02/2020 21:29

I cannot wear Angel anymore , it makes me feel sick , reminds me of an Ex and also my dh hates it 😂
He also does not like my Alien Aura which I really like so I wear it anyway Grin

Imok · 19/02/2020 21:29

I have weird skin chemistry which means few perfumes actually smell nice on me. For a number of years I wore a gorgeous honey and vanilla scent for L'Occitane. It had a wonderful 'warm' scent and often drew compliments from random people. Sadly, it was discontinued several years ago .
I did a few favours for my neighbour and as a thank you she nought me one of those sample packs that you can get on Boots around Christmas time. A couple of them were quite pleasant, but the one that just felt like 'me' from the first day, was Insolence by Guerlain. It's quite old fashioned - violets, iris and berries according to the website. Whenever I wear it I always get compliments. It is intense and long lasting and I love it. X

Alsohuman · 19/02/2020 21:32

No idea @IfNot, I’m ten years post menopause and nothing’s changed on the perfume front. Sadly, the same can’t be said for other things.

Parsley65 · 19/02/2020 21:37

I found mine by accident in the Marks & Spencer advent calendar!
It's called ' Blood oranges' by Shay & Blue.

Mistletorpor · 19/02/2020 21:40

Found mine through a LOT of trial and error over the years, but Jo Malone and Jo Loves tend to work well for me. not so much the florals, but the woody and citrus scents. I have a winter and summer favourite. Also have a couple of really spendy Tom Fords I use for special occasions.

Sammy867 · 19/02/2020 21:41

I’ve had ones at set points in my life.

If I smell Tommy girl I am automatically 12 years old again in a friends house; if I smell alien I am 14 and all the memories that come with it with my friends again in the park.
Between 16 and 21 I wore escada a lot and even now when I smell it I think of summer holidays, hanging with my boyfriend (now my DH). He used to wear echo so every time I smell that we are 16 again.

This signature scent currently is my mum scent, which is flowerbomb. My mum always wore beautiful from since I was young, my grandma was Vanderbilt. My grandma passed away but every time I smell Vanderbilt I think of her and every time I smell beautiful it’s my mum. I wanted a scent that would link to good memories for my daughter at this stage in her life as scent is very powerful in memories. I usually wear it to bed (not a lot) as well as during the day so when she comes in for a cuddle on a nighttime we’re both surrounded by a comforting smell she associates with me (I find the smells in flowerbomb very warm and comforting).

I imagine as she grows my signature smell may change again, although my mum still uses beautiful but then every time I smell flowerbomb I’ll be right back to cuddling my DD in bed as a baby in my memories.

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/02/2020 21:45

Why does perfume need to change at menopause @IfNot? Confused by that, lol. I don’t have a signature scent really, although have always loved Coco Mademoiselle and still wear it. Also Gucci Memoire for work and sometimes D&GThe One.

MrsDilligaf · 19/02/2020 21:45

I do have a "signature scent" and I've worn it for knocking on 30 years, I've never got tired of it or gone off it - it's like an old friend and I love it.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 19/02/2020 21:49

I am amazed so many are mentioning Jo Malone it doesn't smell more than five minutes on me.
My favourite perfume was Tentation by Paloma Picasso which is sadly discontinued. I know like Rose Musc by Rodriguez Narcisco, Alien and Tresor.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 19/02/2020 21:50

Now not know

SpeckledyHen · 19/02/2020 21:51

Can’t believe JM recommendations. It lasts all of 10 seconds.

Izzabellasasperella · 19/02/2020 21:55

I absolutely love Opium and have worn it since I was about 18. I only wear perfume when I go out in the evening and it just makes me feel great😊
@VerityAl ebay has your Opium.
