To find it odd when people sign cards from animals?

I love animals, I have animals, but I wouldn’t dream of signing a card ‘love Puds, Pud’s spawn and Puds hamster’

Also referring to the pet as ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ Confused

Is it just me?

I’ve never heard of anyone referring to a pet as a sibling but I have friends and family who sign cards from their animals and while I never did I think it’s quite sweet.

SerenDippitty · 11/02/2020 10:58

When we had a dog I would sometimes do this but only to people who had pets themselves and “got it”. I also sometimes refer to DB’s dog as my doggy nephew ( I have a human one too).

FishCanFly · 11/02/2020 10:59

i always do Grin

I love all my animals but find it nauseating when people do this. The pets seem like child substitutes rather than animals as part of your family. I also hate the Furbabies term. Too much anthropomorphising

KurriKurri · 11/02/2020 11:00

I have to sign cards from my dog because he can't write - a) because he's only 3 and b) because he's a dog.

He can speak on the phone though and enjoys a chat with my sister when she rings, he also talks to her cat.

Nothing odd here.

elQuintoConyo · 11/02/2020 11:00

So my dog can't sign the birthday card to my sister's greyhound? Outrageous!

Our 8yo giggles when we call the dog his sister, but obviously knows she isn't Hmm

I love getting birthday cards from: Mary, David, kids' names, Felix, Rex and fish X 3 Grin and suchlike, it's sweet.

ludothedog · 11/02/2020 11:00

I do. They're part of my family. Hardly the end of the world.

Mariagatzs12 · 11/02/2020 11:00

We're animal people. Our cat and dog are always referred as sisters. When talking to them and referring to the baby we call him their brother. They're also my mom's "grandchildren" but I think we're extreme tbh

puds11 · 11/02/2020 11:01

@AnneLovesGilbert it’s more the adult referring to the pet as their child’s brother I.e. don’t pull your brothers ears (brother is a dog Confused).

I also hate fur babies. Reminds me of furbies and they were grim.

My son bought me a birthday card from our cats! It was actually a really sweet photo card he’d put together on moonpig. But I think it only works between people who’re in on the joke, so to speak. Like when my dc were small they adored my friend’s dog, so she signed their cards from ddog as well.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 11/02/2020 11:01

I don't have pets but I love it when people sign cards from theirs 😍 🐶🐱🐰

puds11 · 11/02/2020 11:02

@ludothedog did I say it was Hmm

My uncle started doing it when my aunt died. I think he finds it too sad to write just one name.

JKScot4 · 11/02/2020 11:02

@KurriKurri
Completely understandable, keep him working on his pawtograph and he’ll be signing cards in no time.
I hope he’s on a vodabone contract on that phone of his 🐶😉

puds11 · 11/02/2020 11:03

That’s so sad @AhoyMrBeaver Sad

My dad always includes their dog in cards, oh and his wife.

the wife banned me and my sister from the house when we were young women, and we've never met the dog.

It's odd. he's odd, and a crap dad. she is the scum of the earth, but that's another story.

ProclivitiesMcManus · 11/02/2020 11:03

They are bonkers!

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 11/02/2020 11:03

I think it's a bit miserable to take umbridge with something like this. It's harmless. Besides, for a lot of people pets really are a part of the family.

LizziesTwin · 11/02/2020 11:03

I sign things from the dogs if they recipients have dogs or if they make a big fuss when they meet them.

Drum2018 · 11/02/2020 11:04

I've often done it jokingly.

Mariagatzs12 · 11/02/2020 11:06

I love my dog almost as I love my children. I would even go as far to say that I I've them the same but a different type of love. (Just like the love for your children is different to the love for your partner, parents, friends, etc)

Froq · 11/02/2020 11:08

How is it any different to including children’s names on cards?

cookiemonster5 · 11/02/2020 11:10

I don't get it either. My bil got a dog then started sending Mother and Father's Day cards to ILs from the dog (grandma/dad).

At their wedding (the dog has a "human" name) one of the brides workmates wrote the card "to bride and dog" because the amount of talking the bride did about the dog and with its human name and the human references (birthday parties, engagements shoots, wedding clothing etc) she assumed the dog was the groom!!

It's very unhealthy imo. Originally we assumed that it was because bil refused to have a child. But then a child came along and it just got worse. The dog had a sibling, was a big brother, and the birthday parties for the dog STILL happen. In fact the dog seems better treated than the child but that's another thread.

I have too many fish to add them on to cards. Plus I have only named 1 fish lol.

Timetogiveupnow · 11/02/2020 11:11

I do this to wind my dc up. My boy cat is months older then my dc. We tell them that the cat is in charge and as my first born he will inherit everything. The cats also give the kids presents and vice versa. It makes me laugh.

puds11 · 11/02/2020 11:11

Maybe I need to start including the hamster then Grin
