To find it odd when people sign cards from animals?

I love animals, I have animals, but I wouldn’t dream of signing a card ‘love Puds, Pud’s spawn and Puds hamster’

Also referring to the pet as ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ Confused

Is it just me?

On a 'special' birthday I got a card signed by DS, the cat and the dog. Cat's signature was lots of extravagant curls, just like her OTT personality, little rescue dog's was just like a 2yr old trying to write for the first time - she was SO lovely but, yes, a bit....delayed?
Love that cardStar

heartsonacake · 11/02/2020 15:29

YANBU. It’s ridiculous, but not nearly as ridiculous as the people who refer to themselves as their cat/dogs parents and try to treat them like a child. No, you are not your dogs mum, you are an animal owner.

Cait73 · 11/02/2020 15:31

It depends who I'm writing to but I mostly sign off from me and the dog, if I had a partner I possibly wouldn't do this I don't know 🤷🏼‍♀️

I do hate when the vets call me "Bingo's mummy" I'm clearly not of the canine species I do wish they'd stick to "owner" or "slave"

Emmacb82 · 11/02/2020 15:36

I sometimes get a Christmas or birthday card from the cat 🤣 and we do refer to him as my sons hairy brother, but only within our family home. I’m sure there’s plenty more annoying things that are far worse than an animal being included on a card 😜

KarmaStar · 11/02/2020 15:37

It's just light hearted!people consider,on the whole, their pets as part of the family.
Does it really matter so much?
Live and let live.don't judge.

NearlyGranny · 11/02/2020 15:39

It's twee. But people are allowed to be twee.

yolofish · 11/02/2020 15:42

Aw, I think it's sweet and have been known to do it myself - but only to people who I know love our animals, and esp if they have kids who would like a lick from the dog!

SidneyPrescott · 11/02/2020 15:42

I made my dad a Father's Day card from my dog, using her paws to make flowers, and he loved it! It was supposed to be a joke (because he loves my dog more than anyone else).

I don't sign normal cards from my dog, though. She doesn't wish you a merry Christmas or give a shit that it's your birthday.

Flippetydip · 11/02/2020 15:44

I don't generally do it - Flipdog is nowhere near bright enough to sign or acknowledge greeting cards so she gets left out - other than to my Aunt-in-law (is that even a thing?) who has a whippet (bought with indecent haste after her joyless, controlling, husband passed away) who she absolutely dotes on. Cards to and from her include both her dog and ours.

YouokHun · 11/02/2020 15:44

The pets seem like child substitutes rather than animals as part of your family

Yep, I have teenagers, only the dog loves me. I’m thinking of substituting the DC for more Labradors.

I am also guilty of signing cards from my dog along with a paw print. I draw the line at using terms like “fur babies” and sending cards “signed” by my dog to non-doggy people. Sorry if it upsets some MNers or means they think I’ve got 1 O Level or summat.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 11/02/2020 15:48

You'd love cards off me OP - my cat has his own paw print stamp 😁. And yes, it is from his actual paw print. 🐾

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/02/2020 15:55

I don't call my dogs fur babies but I put them in cards to others with dogs etc.

And my step-son who's 7 calls them his brothers 😬 he's an only child and he likes it now he has "brothers" I'm not going to correct him 🤷🏼‍♀️

PreggoFeminist86 · 11/02/2020 15:57

YABU!

My Grandad is a bit bonkers eccentric, and always signed birthday & Christmas cards from himself, his wife & their pets. Multiple pets. At one point they had about 12 cats & dogs...every, single one was individually named in every, single card he sent Grin

I always loved it. Now that they're very elderly & can't have pets, I really bloody miss it.

(People who refer to pets as their 'babies' however are fucking weird!)

thecatsthecats · 11/02/2020 15:59

My husband only realised what he'd let himself in for when he met my wider family and we all shared all our kitty updates.

He was already suckered in already with our two.

It's just a wee bit of whimsy. And yes, of course I like my pets more than most people. Have you met most people? Christ, my cats never give me that sort of grief so long as the food and snuggles keep coming.

taratill · 11/02/2020 16:14

Definitely not weird to send cards with the dogs name on.

I find the term 'furbaby' nauseating but what I really don't get is the instagram dogs' weird use of English, you'll see the owner referred to as 'my hooman' for example.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/02/2020 16:15

Last year we had one elderly guinea-pig (the last of our piggies) who managed to buy DD a bottle of "Stella" for Mother's Day . (Guinea-pigs approve of the ethics of Stella McCartney)

The cats arrived in May and didn't bother buying me a birthday present Hmm but did buy a small Christmas gift for DD and DS (wrapped really badly with fur stuck to the tape -fur gathered off the carpet not pulled out)

They are most definately my 'Good Children' and I tell the DC to feed their little bro/sis Blush

WarrenNicole · 11/02/2020 16:17

Always include our dog’s name on cards. She is absolutely a part of our family.

Tashalburrows · 11/02/2020 16:24

My dd (11) has two ponies who get her birthday cards and Mother's Day cards. They are her world and she works her butt off to look after them. They are part of the family and we quite regularly tell the little welsh pony to be nice to his sister 😀

In the same way when it's there birthdays they get a card pressie and we even made them a birthday cake last year.

I guess it depends on how much of the family they are ?

My dad tells everybody he has two grand ponies and takes great delight in the are you weird looks.

furrytoebean · 11/02/2020 16:28

My cats are my child substitutes. I have no bones about it.

I think I would find not having children way way harder without them.

I only sign cards from the cats to other people with cats though.
I did sent my grandmas cat a Christmas card from our cats though, she loved it.

yolofish · 11/02/2020 16:28

My dog has a Facebook page; she's not very good at SPaG but thinks its something you eat anyway... She gets over 100 likes per post. She has dreams of being a millionaire like that woman wot wrote Hairy Potter, and also opening her own Labrador theme park.

cabingirl · 11/02/2020 16:29

My dog used to write letters to me when I was away at university. Once a month or so. Everyone thought it my Mum was bonkers. I didn't realise it was strange until then!

wendywoopywoo222 · 11/02/2020 16:32

I always used to sign from the pets too when I had them. But only for people who I think would appreciate it. Think we're a certain kind of animal people.

Jeleste · 11/02/2020 16:38

My dogs are sometimes referred to as my first born/oldest children. Especially when DS used to taunt the dog he would hear 'leave your big brother alone! He was here way before you!'
But i dont thing ive ever signed a card from them Grin

FizzyIce · 11/02/2020 16:38

My mum always gets dd a present from the dogs at Christmas . Dd lives it .
We also always get dd a card from our cats on Valentine’s Day . Not quite sure how that started Blush
