To find it odd when people sign cards from animals?

puds11 · 11/02/2020 10:53

I love animals, I have animals, but I wouldn’t dream of signing a card ‘love Puds, Pud’s spawn and Puds hamster’

Also referring to the pet as ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ Confused

Is it just me?

I used to find this really cringy but several friends and neighbours began to send me cards addressed to my animals as well as myself so I felt obliged to sign my cards to them with the animals' names too. What I have always really hated is being referred to as my dog's "mummy". I still don't like it but it is endemic in my very doggy area amongst other dog owners so I just have to grit my teeth and bear it. I don't think I have ever or would ever call another dog owner (eg) "Fido's mummy".

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 11/02/2020 12:10

My dog gets christmas gifts from the dogwalkers and sometimes the neighbours too. I don't give their cats or dogs presents though.

LolaSmiles · 11/02/2020 12:13

Me neither.
That's too far for me. Though I wonder if that's in part because people remember the dog names and forget owner names.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 11/02/2020 12:14

I do this, I also give any card to DH to the cat, he mainly chews them, I like to see the little pointy teeth marks as his signature.

TulipCake · 11/02/2020 12:14

I’ve done it on cards to kids or to a family group that includes kids, but then felt a bit of a twat when writing a card to grown up nieces or whatever and have left it out Grin

Loveislandlydia · 11/02/2020 12:15

I only include pets names on certain cards- I’d include them on my mum’s card and family friends’ cards but I wouldn’t include them on neighbours’ or my grandparents’ cards. Not sure why really, suppose it depends on formality and relationships.

My DH buys me a valentines card ‘from the pets’ and signs it with paw prints 😂

Megan2018 · 11/02/2020 12:16

Animals are family in my tribe-but we are all equally dotty. I don’t generally do it to people outside my immediate circle though.

Mind you we exchange wrapped gifts to and from the pets......Grin

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 11/02/2020 12:17

We don't refer to the cat as a furbaby though, nor ourselves as his parents, it would be mathematically nonsensical, he is older than us (in cat years), he's essentially a grumpy middle aged lodger

CameFromAway · 11/02/2020 12:18

YANBU
It’s twee and stupid.

@lazylinguist Biscuit

Ah, a dog biscuit!
Woof woof - thank you very much - love from lazylinguist's dog x

Wolfff · 11/02/2020 12:20

For immediate family only DH, DDs we used to send a card from the animals and draw a picture of each of them in the card. Only the cat left now. She normally signs alongside one of us Smile

TheWernethWife · 11/02/2020 12:44

I'm mummy to my kitties and my friend is mummy to her dogs, they are family to us. The more I see of people the more I like animals.

Gogolego · 11/02/2020 12:56

Yabu ddog is very good and gets people birthday and Christmas presents & cards. She signs them lots of licks. She also receives presents . And even took part in a doggy secret Santa last year

lynsey91 · 11/02/2020 13:04

@lazylinguist I am not sure that a lot of the mocking is "thinly veiled".

So many sneery posts on lots of mumsnet threads from people who obviously think they are far superior and intelligent to other posters.

I get that we all think differently about things but why feel the need to belittle others?

Take a look at the Valentines Day thread on which I and a few other posters dared to say we celebrate it. Lots of rude comments saying it was childish, tacky, pathetic etc. And of course the obligatory "we don't need to be told when to show love we show it all year" posts.

Me and DH also refer to each other as dogs' mum and dad. I say things like "dad will be home soon" or "go to dad".

Phifedean123 · 11/02/2020 13:09

I've never not done this Grin
Mine and my dad's cats swap Christmas presents too. Maybe we are a bit bonkers tho 😂

lotsofdogshere · 11/02/2020 13:19

My now deceased dog had a loving relationship with my sister's dog. I confess that he once sent her a photograph of the together on the beach. The message he wrote was to say he was missing her, wished they lived closer and could race about and swim on the beach every day. Strangely enough, she replied.

I loath 'fur babies' They're dogs for pities sake, even dogs who write the occasional letter to their best mate.

I never put the dogs names on cards, unless the card is going to the wonderful woman who runs our dog training group and has my dogs to stay in her house when I'm on holiday. yes, it does cost often more than my holiday....

AlanRickmanFanClub · 11/02/2020 13:21

The pets seem like child substitutes rather than animals as part of your family.

I couldn't have children, my cat was my baby - and I always added his name after mine on cards to family and friends.

BrimfulofSasha · 11/02/2020 13:22

Our neighbour does this, parents, children, dogs.
I'm not really a pet person but they obviously are and I think it is sweet.

People saying their pets are the equivalent of children, on the other hand, I have no time for.

PetitTorteois · 11/02/2020 13:25

All five of my pets regularly sign birthday and Xmas cards. They are part of the family, just because they can't write doesn't make them any less of a family!

Reallynowdear · 11/02/2020 13:25

I'm Granny to the fabulous puppy my daughter recently rescued from hideous living conditions.

I love him so much I don't care how daft it sounds.

His name will be on all future greetings cards.

hettysdrawers · 11/02/2020 13:26

I do this, only to close friends/family who love my cats though and I draw a little picture of each of them by their names

anon2000000000 · 11/02/2020 13:50

My son did when he was little but he was 3 so it was ok. He laughs now when we say the dogs are his siblings.

undercoveraessedai · 11/02/2020 13:52

Haha I do this and my close friends' children all know that they have cousins... Fluffy ones 😂 I regret nothing!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/02/2020 14:00

They're also my mom's "grandchildren" but I think we're extreme tbh

My mum used to say she had a grandson if anyone asked as she was fed up with being questioned about why I don't have children. She was far too polite to tell them to mind their own business!

I don't sign cards from my cat, he has his own paw print stamp so I don't have to!
