To not understand adults who are obsessed with Disney or Harry Potter?

At the moment my Facebook seems to be full of Disney and Harry Potter stuff for sale. Shoes, clothes, bags, stationary etc. And full grown adults commenting saying they want it.

Just saw something posted by a bargain page, £11 for a roll of Harry Potter wallpaper and one of my friends wants to decorate their dining room with it.

Don't get me wrong I loved it all as a child/early teen but I haven't carried the obsession with me into adulthood.

AINU or is it all a bit weird and gimmicky?

Agree. Don't get the attraction of either.

LellyMcKelly · 09/02/2020 16:08

If it’s not harming anyone and giving them pleasure then let them enjoy it. I feel the same way about running and cucumbers, but if that’s what others are into let them fill their boots.

Muggle. Wink

Paperdove87 · 09/02/2020 16:10

Why do you need to understand it? It's a big world. Lots of people love lots of things. It would be very dull if we were all the same.

SuzieBishop · 09/02/2020 16:10

I loooove Harry Potter. Didn’t realise I was supposed to stop liking it when I hit puberty. I apologise profusely OP.

gamerwidow · 09/02/2020 16:11

Each to their own I’m not a fan of either but how other people spend their time and money isn’t anything to do with me.
I don’t like those word stencil things that go on walls or mass produced wall art or ornaments but I don’t know go around calling the people who do buy it weird. Let people have different taste to you in peace.

goldie04 · 09/02/2020 16:11

What's the harm in it? I love Disney! Do you have the same opinion on adult model train collectors? Adult comic book collectors? Just leave people be.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/02/2020 16:12

Do you have to understand them?

There’s a lot of things I don’t see the attraction in which are very popular....watching soaps, football, pretty much most other sports. Doesn’t bother me. I just get on with doing what I enjoy. People like different things.

NameChange84 · 09/02/2020 16:12

There have been so many threads on Mumsnet about this. If you do a search one you will find lots of people agreeing with you and lots disagreeing many times over in threads that seem to pop up every couple of months. Live and let live. None of us have to get everything and liking/not liking Disney or Harry Potter or whatever doesn’t make people superior or inferior to others. Different tastes make the world go round.

hellosid · 09/02/2020 16:12

I do still like watching Harry Potter if it's on TV don't get me wrong

OP posts:
Squirrelblanket · 09/02/2020 16:13

I don't get it either. It doesn't bother me that people like it (apart from that it's EVERYWHERE!) but I do think that adults being heavily into something for children is a bit weird.

redexpat · 09/02/2020 16:13

We all have our interests. I dont get quite a lot of things, so I scroll past.

user1019273703 · 09/02/2020 16:14

I love harry potter and have most of the lego sets on display. I don't think it really matters what age you are!

Voxx · 09/02/2020 16:14

I don’t the appeal of golf, people who spend their weekends fell running for fun or the lure of crochet. Must be because we’re all different. 🤷‍♀️

kittykatkitty · 09/02/2020 16:15

Always

AhoyMrBeaver · 09/02/2020 16:17

It's fun. Some adults like having fun. I'm not one of them, but I'm not baffled by those that are.

KangaandRooandPigletToo · 09/02/2020 16:19

Loads of things I ‘don’t get’, I could write a million threads. I don’t though...

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 09/02/2020 16:20

YABU

I don't understand other adults who can't seem to grasp the fact that shock horror everybody's different and like different things.

GrumpyHoonMain · 09/02/2020 16:20

A lot of the 20-30 year olds who love HP grew up with the books well before the film. You wouldn’t question it if someone had a wall sticker of ‘Shall I compare thee to a summers day’ in their house - how is being a HP fan any different? Other than one being considered a more elite interest than the other.

Emmelina · 09/02/2020 16:21

What makes you tick, OP? I bet many people would think it odd.

PorpentinaScamander · 09/02/2020 16:21

I dont understand people who aren't obsessed with Disney and Harry Potter. Horses for courses and all that.

Iwantacookie · 09/02/2020 16:22

I love Disney and my lounge has disney ornaments in it.
I dont care what people think about it. They like things I dont thats what makes us all individuals.

Sceptre86 · 09/02/2020 16:24

I am currently sat in my minnie mouse pjs and slippers feeling sorry for myself as I have a rotten cold. I wouldn't decorate my house in hp wallpaper but each to their own. What about adults into video games, train models, anime and the like? Yabu

Cremebrule · 09/02/2020 16:25

There is a spectrum of collecting stuff and weird obsession. Most people will just have an interest in lots of different things and like memorabilia.i have to admit I find it strange that some adults want to get married at Disney land. But different people have different interests and they’d probably find my interests dull. That said though,on one of the Disney planning boards there is a man that keeps posting photos of him with the Disney princesses and how much he loves them. I’d want to run a mile if I was them.

GoosetheCat · 09/02/2020 16:25

Do you have to understand it? I love both Disney and Harry Potter. I grew up with both of these and I'm in my 30's. Should I have stopped when I hit puberty? I must have missed the memo.

Honestly, just let people be.
