To not understand adults who are obsessed with Disney or Harry Potter?

hellosid · 09/02/2020 16:06

At the moment my Facebook seems to be full of Disney and Harry Potter stuff for sale. Shoes, clothes, bags, stationary etc. And full grown adults commenting saying they want it.

Just saw something posted by a bargain page, £11 for a roll of Harry Potter wallpaper and one of my friends wants to decorate their dining room with it.

Don't get me wrong I loved it all as a child/early teen but I haven't carried the obsession with me into adulthood.

AINU or is it all a bit weird and gimmicky?

I love Star Wars and always wanted a really expensive light saber. I am a very sensible woman btw

SistersOfPercy · 09/02/2020 19:51

@belay I have many working sabers as well as a life size Han in carbonite, life size R2 and 3PO and many wearable costumes from stormtroopers to boba fett. Add in a life size Ewok and a yoda too.

DH and I don’t drink, we don’t smoke or go out partying. We love what we collect. I really don’t care what other people think to that tbh

MimiLaRue · 09/02/2020 19:54

I was about to agree with you and then realised that I love hello kitty stuff and wonder woman and kitsch stuff like that. I think perhaps it IS about nostalgia from childhood and not wanting to grow up. It represents a part of you that still relates to being a child and the freedom and fantasy that came with that. I think its pretty healthy to be in touch with that part of yourself as adult life sometimes seems its just responsibility and mundane crap!

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 09/02/2020 19:58

A Harry Potter themed dining room sounds infinitely preferable to greige, no matter how tasteful one might find greige.

dontmesswiththeGC · 09/02/2020 20:01

Err

Toastytoes1 · 09/02/2020 20:02

What do you mean by obsessed exactly? Your OP doesn’t describe people who are ‘obsessed’ in the traditional sense, just because people like to buy paraphernalia. I love Harry Potter, my phone has a Harry Potter case, I’ve read the books multiple times and I’ve been to the studio tours 3 times since it opened however many years ago... am I obsessed? I don’t know that I am so much as I just really enjoy Harry Potter. My husband likes Lord of the Rings and we had to go to Hobbiton when we went to New Zealand last year. Is he obsessed? My sister-in-law likes owls and has a fair quantity of owl themed ornaments in her home, is she obsessed?

hippoherostandinghere · 09/02/2020 20:11

After all this time?
Always.

BahMooQuack · 09/02/2020 20:15

I love cooking and I love bloggers who have a sort of French-inspired aspirational lifestyle sort of theme going on.

Banal as shit for loads of other people I think!

Bluntness100 · 09/02/2020 20:16

I do like the movies for both, but I would also find decorating your home with it, or dressing up like it a bit odd, excessive and tacky. Each to their own though. If it makes people happy, the best let them crack on.

DdraigGoch · 09/02/2020 20:21

Different interests yes, but there's something creepy about adult women obsessed with the young Harry growing up into an adult. Same as the Disney princess fan mentioned earlier. It feels like a cover for something more sinister.
Is it that they're obsessed with or just the stories and the wizarding world in general?

I can't understand why anyone over the age of 12 would want to watch 22 wimps kick a bladder around a field for 90 minutes but each to their own...

MadCattery · 09/02/2020 20:29

I like Harry Potter, and also like Disney. But, I live 90 minutes drive from Walt Disney World and know of adults, usually women, who are totally obsessed with Disney. As Florida residents, there is an annual pass available, which people buy so they can go there EVERY weekend. Like I said, I like it well enough, but having been there a few times, I don't get it. And, have been to Harry Potter at Universal twice-might consider to one more time. Might. Disney, Epcot, Universal are all very carefully designed theme parks, aimed only at separating you from your money. Every ride empties out to a pricey gift shop.

MrsSnitchnose · 09/02/2020 21:22

@DefinatelyAWeeGobshite ahem, can you not besmirch the good name of my house by assigning OP to it? Thank you Grin

MTGGamer · 09/02/2020 21:44

My dad is in his mid-60s and adores everything Harry Potter. He has a wand collection, with handmade racks for his walls, is proudly #TeamHufflepuff and plans to build the Lego Hogwarts Castle when he is recovering from his knee replacement surgery. It keeps him happy and why shouldn't it? He is a Harry Potter nerd and I love him regardless; it's a passion that he'll no doubt pass on to my DS, through reading him all the books.

Apirateslifeforme · 09/02/2020 22:18

I'm not sure you really need to understand to be honest, because theres lots I dont really get people liking myself, but I dont spend any time thinking about it.

I'm a massive Disney fan. The few films I repeatedly watched throughout a very bleak childhood were my only light.
I was emotionally, physically and sexually abused. I was neglected, I lived in fear at home, and also felt fearful at school because I was bullied because of the neglect.
The only thing I had that brought me any happiness was a few films. I heard as a child that the castle at the beginning of the films was an actual castle, and there were really fireworks. I was amazed and always said I would go there one day. I grew up seeing the adverts for Disneyland paris.
Even at the age of maybe 5/6 I'd attributed Disney to happiness. Oh I longed to visit the castle.

As an adult, I of course wanted to share my love of the Disney princesses with daughter, and weve always done Disney to a certain extent. Its always been special to me.

I've always linked it with happiness and a feeling of safety.
Disney is my thing, and i really wish that it wasnt viewed as weird that I'm into it. I'm not harming anyone. I'm just pretty happy to go and sing, dance and skip around. It's the one place I feel like I can be me.

Lyricallie · 09/02/2020 22:21

@WomanInTheWindow haha it's amazing you definitely need to go! The food is amazing, the weather can be amazing, drinking round the world at Epcot and fireworks what's not to like?!

@ChestyNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire
I have! I actually worked in Hollywood Studios for a Summer 7 years ago and it was amazing! Made friends for life.

I don't think I know any adult fan who are actually attracted to Daniel Radcliffe, especially as a child Confused People love the world the JK Rowling created, they aren't creeping on young kids ffs.

NotEvenTheKing · 09/02/2020 22:28

I literally adore both.

YABU.

SapphireSeptember · 09/02/2020 22:37

Or maybe it's because as I grew up reading the books Harry grew up with me? I was 18 when the last book came out, in that one Harry was 17. He's not even my favourite character, that would be Severus Snape (who I had a ridiculous crush on aged 14, which I can't even blame on Alan Rickman because it was before I'd seen any of the films. Blush ) Before that I'd definitely had a crush on Daniel Radcliffe, but as I was 13 that wouldn't have been weird.

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 07:42

My mum was the one who got me into Harry Potter. She is 60 and still loves it. She has the pyjamas and the socks Grin
I also have Harry Potter pyjamas on socks but I definitely have more Disney merchandise. I have tonnes of Disney t-shirts and hoodies, jewellery, pyjamas, socks, a rucksack, stationary etc

WikkiTikkiWoo · 10/02/2020 08:17

I don't get people who judge others for the likes and dislikes. So there you go.

FizzyIce · 10/02/2020 08:22

It’s just pop culture .
I like both , enjoy Disneyworld and universal for the Harry Potter stuff, love the studio tour in Watford .
Have the odd nicknak in the house but that’s it . Wouldn’t decorate a room round it but each to their own . Not hurting me

ChickLitLover · 10/02/2020 08:24

But why do you feel the need to understand it?

Just accept that some people love these things and move on. It’s Harry Potter/Disney, not like they’re doing something that’s harming anyone. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Blackandgreenteas · 10/02/2020 08:24

I like HP. Not a fan of Disney. I guess I don’t understand loooooving anything to that extent, yet nothing against these two things as such. Same as anything else really!

Morgan12 · 10/02/2020 08:24

I know a few men who have bars in their homes decorated with football stuff. What's you opinion on that?

Willow2017 · 10/02/2020 08:27

Whats to understsnd?
Who give a jot what other people like that you dont?
Life would be pretty boring if we all stopped having hobbies, liking some things once we hit 18!
I am.not an 'expert' on HP but i love the whole concept and am sitting here in.my HP pjs and am 50+.

Nobody is forcing you to like anything so how on earth does it affect you in any way?
I took.my kids (tween and teens) to Florida 4 years ago we did Disney and Universal and had a ball. I am not interested in the 'princess's side of it but the rest was amazing. Tween and i queued for ages to meet the 'velociraptor' as we are also huge Jurassic world fans. Its great to have imagination you should try it.
I also like Star Trek, Marvel, and playing on the Xbox so better shoot me now for not 'acting my age'😂😂
