To not understand adults who are obsessed with Disney or Harry Potter?

At the moment my Facebook seems to be full of Disney and Harry Potter stuff for sale. Shoes, clothes, bags, stationary etc. And full grown adults commenting saying they want it.

Just saw something posted by a bargain page, £11 for a roll of Harry Potter wallpaper and one of my friends wants to decorate their dining room with it.

Don't get me wrong I loved it all as a child/early teen but I haven't carried the obsession with me into adulthood.

AINU or is it all a bit weird and gimmicky?

Love HP even our cats are called Hermione and Bellatrix. My kids love it as well now!

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 09/02/2020 17:52

I have to agree with you to a certian extent OP. I like some Disney films, some I'd just watch when they're on but some I really like. I enjoyed some of the HP books but I thught the films were dire. I can understand why some adults like going to the theme parks because its a full experience.

Enjoyment is one thing, but especially online you'll see adults who're completely obsessed which is bizarre. Identifying with a character to the extent that you think you personally know that character, and seeing some of the abuse that JK Rowling gets or the drama surrounding the choice of an actor playing a mythical character (little mermaid) is going beyond appreciation.

LEELULUMPKIN · 09/02/2020 17:57

I've never seen Star Wars or the Harry Potter films but I totally get that people love it.

They probably wouldn't "get" my appreciation of the art form that are "The Muppets! :)

Guess what, we are all different.

Ragwort · 09/02/2020 17:57

I agree with you but have just spent the afternoon at a beautiful service in a cathedral, and this morning I went to a different service at another church - many people wouldn't understand why I chose to spend my leisure time in church. We are all different.

I tend to find the people I know who are into this kind of stuff are quite geeky types. I suppose it’s just like any collector isn’t it? It’s like grown men having toy train sets in their attic. These things probably appeal to people who don’t want to fully grow up. Can’t say it’s my thing but I’m sure there are many people who wouldn’t understand my cushion obsession!

Bihye · 09/02/2020 17:59

The HP books gave me a wonderful world to hide in and retreat to when I was a teenager going through an awful time. I'll be a fan all my life!

dottiedodah · 09/02/2020 17:59

Well my Dear Aunt loves HP and she is in her 70s ! Went to HP land here (Cant remember where it is and loved it) Also we all went to Roald Dahls museum as well .Wheres the harm ?

YABU

I bet if you listed specific artists, activities, film series etc you liked we could critique them and rip them apart like you are doing to others.

BlueMoon1103 · 09/02/2020 18:00

@SuzieBishop same. Maybe I should have realised there was a cut off for liking things.

Seriously OP...shhh, let people enjoy things.

wildcherries · 09/02/2020 18:07

The world is burning, if Disney and Harry Potter make people have fun for a while, more power too them.

Thefaceofboe · 09/02/2020 18:09

I mean I like the odd Disney film and have watched Harry Potter a few times but I would draw a line at buying merchandise Grin

Growingboys · 09/02/2020 18:09

Agree, I find it odd when adults are still into kid stuff like that. A good friend of mine is obsessed by Disney and listens to the songs when she's sad. She had a weird childhood, lots of trauma, and I think this helps her go back to a time when she felt safe.

Kwkwjwkek · 09/02/2020 18:11

It’s fun. Have u ever been to Disney world before?

slipperywhensparticus · 09/02/2020 18:11

I feel this way about football fans tbh cant understand the attraction

Dozer · 09/02/2020 18:11

Live and let live!

MrsSnitchnose · 09/02/2020 18:12

Suppose I better get rid of all my Harry Potter merchendise, stop writing fanfiction and have some of my tattoos removed then... Hmm

Sonichu · 09/02/2020 18:12

"AIBU to not understand that different people like different things"

Yes.

Lolaholax · 09/02/2020 18:16

Life can be so miserable, dull, repetitive, routine-driven that it’s nice that people enjoy Disney and HP and it provides them with lighthearted enjoyment and an escape. These are films that are culturally a massive massive phenomenon for all ages especially Disney and they tell stories that often keep their magic for decades and follow people through their lives and the generations.

Or would you rather we were all only and always interested in BBC Breakfast and Question Time? Is that highbrow enough for you OP?

Patroclus · 09/02/2020 18:20

Was laughing my head off recently when JK pissed off all the RightSideOfHistoryers on Twitter- all 'BUT HARRY POTTER TAUGHT ME ITS OK TO BE DIFFERENT''. Fine if you want to enjoy it but if you want to pretend to be all deep youll have to do better than a childrens book.

Elderflower14 · 09/02/2020 18:20

My son is autistic. Disney and Harry Potter are his world 🗺.... YABVVVVVVU!

Patroclus · 09/02/2020 18:21

Its nothing compared to my disdain for people who treat fucking superhero shite as Really Important Stuff.

RasberryRoyale · 09/02/2020 18:22

Yabu

I love Disney.
Like Harry Potter. (The books, less so the films)
And...shock horror ...
Gaming.

*Is chased off Mumsnet in shame 😂)

Jux · 09/02/2020 18:24

Sometimes - sometimes - I see a themed thing and for a moment I'm 11 years old again and seeing myself owning it.......That's it.

Mostly this doesn't happen at all.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 09/02/2020 18:26

Clearly a slytherin

Jux · 09/02/2020 18:26

RaspberryRoyale I like gaming (though I'm shit at it, still working my way through the first Witcher), like HP books but not Disney in any shape or form. I've been on MN since 2005 and lurked here since 2002.
