To not understand adults who are obsessed with Disney or Harry Potter?

hellosid · 09/02/2020 16:06

At the moment my Facebook seems to be full of Disney and Harry Potter stuff for sale. Shoes, clothes, bags, stationary etc. And full grown adults commenting saying they want it.

Just saw something posted by a bargain page, £11 for a roll of Harry Potter wallpaper and one of my friends wants to decorate their dining room with it.

Don't get me wrong I loved it all as a child/early teen but I haven't carried the obsession with me into adulthood.

AINU or is it all a bit weird and gimmicky?

I love Disney. °o° You don’t have to get it.

golddustwomen · 09/02/2020 16:26

@LangClegsOpinionIsNoted 😂😂 beat me to it

BobLobLawLLB · 09/02/2020 16:26

We are taking DD and DS to Disney\universal for week. So i have joined some FB groups about Disney. Its like a whole other world! disney tattoo's,disney themed kitchens etc. Very informative for a first timer though.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 09/02/2020 16:29

Love Disney and Harry Potter. Why wouldn’t you?

Sibbles · 09/02/2020 16:29

I have loads of Disney, Harry potter, manga, comic book related clothes, stationary, decorations, cushions etc. It's what I like, nothing really to get about it!

JacquesHammer · 09/02/2020 16:30

What is there to understand? Different people like different things, it is a really simple concept!

Isithometimeyet0987 · 09/02/2020 16:30

I love Harry Potter!!! I’ve been to the Warner bros studio tour a few times. I don’t get why other people enjoying some things annoys some people so much. I’m sure people who like Harry Potter and Disney don’t like everything you do and don’t complain about it.

taratill · 09/02/2020 16:32

I love Disney and HP. Bit of light relief from an otherwise quite mundane/ stressful existence.

What do you love OP?

NameChangeNugget · 09/02/2020 16:34

Were you in Hufflepuff form at school OP? Grin

Barbie222 · 09/02/2020 16:37

Different interests yes, but there's something creepy about adult women obsessed with the young Harry growing up into an adult. Same as the Disney princess fan mentioned earlier. It feels like a cover for something more sinister.

mindproject · 09/02/2020 16:38

I don't like Disney or Harry Potter but I do like some other childish things. I like what I like and it doesn't harm anyone. There are lots and lots of adults who collect toys or have hobbies they've never grown out of. I think it's good to have connections to childhood.

PorpentinaScamander · 09/02/2020 16:38

I'm currently watching UP (admittedly DS' choice not mine). Snuggled up under a Winnie The Pooh blanket. My Beauty and The Beast bedding is in the machine after stripping my bed earlier. Ive got a Harry Potter set ready to put on in its place.
My shelves in the lounge have Disney and Harry Potter shelves. And I have a Hufflepuff banner on the wall.

TitianaTitsling · 09/02/2020 16:38

OP didn't get the Hogwarts letter.... Currently sheltering from the storm having an HP marathon!

Confuddledtown · 09/02/2020 16:38

When I redecorate my living room I'll make sure I dont invite you for dinner so you wont have to see it

BlackCatSleeping · 09/02/2020 16:38

I also love Disney and Harry Potter!!

I don't understand the obsession with grey. It's such a boring color, but I suppose it's good we're all different.

Barbie222 · 09/02/2020 16:38

Actually wasn't Mickey Mouse one of the search terms operation ore kept a eye on?

Tombliwho · 09/02/2020 16:38

This again🙄 when Harry Potter books came out I was about 7. I still have my original hardback copies, some now over 20 years old. I grew up with the books and then the films and in that sense it "belongs" more to my generation that the current young children. I collect the Lego and love having it on display. No I personally wouldn't use HP wallpaper but if someone else does it doesn't bother me whatsoever.
Get a life and stop snarking on other people who aren't harming anyone.

SachaStark · 09/02/2020 16:41

I love Harry Potter, and I’m 30. The books came out as I was growing up, and I re-read them every single year to enjoy that sense of nostalgia, and Rowling’s world-building.

The films are proper shit, though. I’ve still not forgiven Warner Bros. for that.

Popular things I don’t understand why on earth anybody enjoys: yoga (I have been to try several different classes, and concluded each time that it is the most dull activity available that you have to pay money for); decorating rooms with colour-match cushions and accessories (your home looks like Dunelm Mill threw up on it); wearing leggings (they look like crap on most people).

But hey, we all have differing interests and opinions. Just because you don’t like Harry Potter and Disney, doesn’t mean you are more grown-up than other people.

ChestyNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 09/02/2020 16:42

Yes YABU.

Differences make the world go round.

Get yourself a hobby and stop worrying about what others like

GreatAuntE320 · 09/02/2020 16:43

I cannot abide Disney and really do not understand the whole concept.
Harry Potter, on the other hand, is imaginative, deals with real "issues" and is entertaining in the broadest meaning of the word. However, I wouldn't visit a theme park.
Books and films, great, all the other stuff "greedy".

Lovemusic33 · 09/02/2020 16:44

I don’t think it really matters what people want to buy/wear. It doesn’t really effect you.

I don’t wear any of it but I don’t judge people who do, I wear what I want, it might not be to everyone’s taste but I don’t care.

Graphista · 09/02/2020 16:45

What are your interests op?

I’m a massive Star Wars fan myself and have eagerly awaited each movie (even the ones that turned out totally duff unfortunately) and have some memorabilia too, I’d have more if I could afford it and had the space!

I am (still) a massive George Michael fan too.

I’m a huge “friends” fan too and have been since the first airing, I know the show inside out and have a fair amount of memorabilia. I’m beyond excited about the new episode/tvm being made (details seem vague at the moment).

I’m a big movie and tv fan generally speaking not as in simply watching but read related magazines, articles and books, know lots about various producers and directors and other crew and have personal favourites, filming and scriptwriting techniques etc

I have friends who are fans of Harry Potter, Disney, terry Prachett, Star Trek, civil war re-enactment, live role play games, video gaming (showing my age there but you know what I mean), various sports teams and music acts...

All sorts

I find it far more odd if someone DOESN’T have a passion in life.

I may not personally like what they’re interested in (I’m quite anti Disney myself because of the bigotry and corporate control they exercise, it’s quite disturbing the lawsuits they’ve dodged over the years and the bad publicity they’ve mostly avoided) but I absolutely support their enjoyment of it and when they post on sm or mention they’re going on a trip or buying a coveted and difficult to get hold of item of memorabilia I’m positive with them about it.

A phrase you need to embrace op:

Each to their own!

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes and as long as they’re not harming anyone else then let them crack on and be a supportive friend.

I love my friends and that includes helping them to enjoy the things they like most. Certainly I wouldn't criticise them for liking whatever it is.

LucaFritz · 09/02/2020 16:45

Something is Siriusly Ron with you Wink

TheMemoryLingers · 09/02/2020 16:46

The world would be very boring if we all liked the same things.

Be1atrix · 09/02/2020 16:46

YABU. They give other people joy, leave them to it.

I'm in my mid 30s and love nothing more than snuggling on the sofa watching HP or a Disney movie. I have a highly pressured job and am very good at being a Grown Up in the week; why shouldn't I wind down at weekends with someone that I enjoy?!

I'll still be watching when I'm 70
