To not understand adults who are obsessed with Disney or Harry Potter?

hellosid · 09/02/2020 16:06

At the moment my Facebook seems to be full of Disney and Harry Potter stuff for sale. Shoes, clothes, bags, stationary etc. And full grown adults commenting saying they want it.

Just saw something posted by a bargain page, £11 for a roll of Harry Potter wallpaper and one of my friends wants to decorate their dining room with it.

Don't get me wrong I loved it all as a child/early teen but I haven't carried the obsession with me into adulthood.

AINU or is it all a bit weird and gimmicky?

Not unreasonable to not understand it but you don't need to understand it.
They're having fun and they're not hurting anyone, so there's no issue.

I enjoy those things a reasonable amount, but I have my own interests that some people think are weird and childish (video games).
Different strokes for different folks and all that.

Progress2019 · 09/02/2020 16:47

Everyone has something that their interested in. Can’t say mine are Harry Potter or Disney. Nor is it Love Island, or Strictly, or the royal family, or Mrs Hinch, but I bloody love football, and a particular actor, and stuff to do with a craft I do. My daughter seems to talk for quite a long time about Vans.

We’re all different, its what makes the world go round, and I think its great.

MouthBreathingRage · 09/02/2020 16:47

Yes it is weird, but each to their own. I'm of the Harry Potter generation, and did enjoy the books when they first came out. In retrospect though, whilst the world of the books is still amazing, the characters are dire, very badly written. Don't even get me started on the films, some of the worst tripe I've ever had to sit through.

Nostalgia is strong in many though, so if they still enjoy childhood media then whatever. The only ones that I roll my eyes at are middle aged people declaring that they're 'proudly a Hufflepuff'. Yep, makes you such a geek Hmm.

Unsureconfused46 · 09/02/2020 16:47

Fully agree OP. I do not get it either.
I respect that all of us are different with different likes and dislikes so that's fair enough.
I've never been remotely interested in HP!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/02/2020 16:47

I agree - i have a very good friend who is ga-ga about anything Disney. She's 62. She is in every other respect sane.

Rockingham1 · 09/02/2020 16:48

I was in Italy at the weekend and the women’s clothes in the window of Gucci had Mickey Mouse on them

ethelfleda · 09/02/2020 16:48

I don’t think it’s for you to ‘understand’ or not, tbh OP. I mean, who really cares what your opinion is on the matter?

Echobelly · 09/02/2020 16:48

They're not for me but I can see why people enjoy the escapism. For those with kids it can be something they bond over as well, which is a big positive for them.

Abouttimemum · 09/02/2020 16:50

I love a bit of Harry Potter, I just bought a rucksack to carry all of DS stuff around. Under the pretence that it’s his. But of course it’s mine.
Also just bought him a Harry Potter sleeping bag. Utterly ridiculous.

RedSheep73 · 09/02/2020 16:50

Killjoy! I love Harry Potter and I was already a grown up when the first one came out. Not sure I'd have Potter wallpaper but I often wear Potter pyjamas

edgewater · 09/02/2020 16:52

I’m not obsesssed but I do love Disney. No different to being a football fan, in my opinion.

FilthyforFirth · 09/02/2020 16:52

Oh dear, you wont like me. Mid 30s and love both. Off on holiday to Disneyworld soon. I'm not sorry either.

Straycatstrut · 09/02/2020 16:55

Love all things Harry Potter related too and would totally get a HP duvet.

SoftBlocks · 09/02/2020 16:56

YANBU but it’s up to them.

HarryElephante · 09/02/2020 16:56

I don't understand anyone who thinks or likes different things to me.

We should all think like me. And like what I like.

SapphireSeptember · 09/02/2020 16:59

Hello! What about Pusheen, is that allowed? Cos I adore Pusheen!

Disclaimer, I'm a huge fan of Harry Potter, spent the last three Halloweens dressed as Professor Snape, spent a fortune last year on going to a LARP loosely based on the idea of Hogwarts, you get the idea... When Boots did their range of Harry Potter themed make-up at Christmas I was ecstatic, two of my favourite things combined? Hell yes!
I'm also a proud Hufflepuff, so a lot of my HP stuff is related to that (my friend got me a Hufflepuff scrunchie for Christmas that she got from Etsy and I've worn it most days since.)

What does bug me is people who can't grasp the concept that other people like different things to them, and then harp on about it whenever you dare mention it in their hearing. Hmm On of my ex-colleagues did this and it did my nut in. She was very sneery about anything that was 'different' in her very narrow world view (hence kicking off about me wearing green lipstick around Halloween one year)

MargotB7 · 09/02/2020 17:00

feel the same way about running and cucumbers

Grin

I don't like HP or Disney but running - I'm baffled. I do go to the gym and classes but running????

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/02/2020 17:00

Pusheen is a cat.

Of course that's allowed!

Grin
SapphireSeptember · 09/02/2020 17:01

@Straycatstrut Do it! My mum got me a HP duvet set for Christmas 2018 (when I would have been 30.) Grin She gets me. (She also knitted me a Pusheen mermaid stuffie last year. I love my mum. 💜 )

BreconBeBuggered · 09/02/2020 17:02

If it gives people innocent pleasure, it's all good. Not my cup of tea, but then I have my own obsessions that other people think I'm too old for.

Fact is, I'm too old to care what other people think.

MinesaPinot · 09/02/2020 17:04

I'm very fond of a bit of HP. I've read the books several times and likewise seen the films loads. Dp bought me tickets for the studio tour for Christmas. Am I hurting anyone - I don't think so. Each to their own.

Lyricallie · 09/02/2020 17:05

I'm sure there are things you like that I wouldn't "understand".

I'm 27 currently in Disney PJs and Harry potter jumper. Planning my 2021 holiday to Disney world (without any kids Shock).

But yes I'm sure you "don't understand" or you're just being snide and looking down on people who don't fit your specific mold.

WomanInTheWindow · 09/02/2020 17:07

We live in a world where some people spend hundreds on handbags, others spend hours in an allotment, people recreate historical conflicts and dress as soldiers, others still travel hundreds of miles to see their team and others in training a horse or dog.

Is immersion in an imaginary worlda hobby really deserving of particular bafflement?

SistersOfPercy · 09/02/2020 17:08

Fairly sure OP would hate my house. I collect Star Wars but only life size props and have a dedicated room for this.
Oh, and I'm off to Disney especially to visit Galaxys Edge.

Each to their own eh?

WomanInTheWindow · 09/02/2020 17:08

Lyricallie - you sound like my sort of person! I haven't been yet, but would love to go!
