To not understand adults who are obsessed with Disney or Harry Potter?

At the moment my Facebook seems to be full of Disney and Harry Potter stuff for sale. Shoes, clothes, bags, stationary etc. And full grown adults commenting saying they want it.

Just saw something posted by a bargain page, £11 for a roll of Harry Potter wallpaper and one of my friends wants to decorate their dining room with it.

Don't get me wrong I loved it all as a child/early teen but I haven't carried the obsession with me into adulthood.

AINU or is it all a bit weird and gimmicky?

@Insertdeadcatsnamehere

Shhh, I was trying to downplay it. Blush Now you're here I can admit to it! I had a dream not that long ago where I married him (book version, not film version, complete with long black robes and greasy hair, with me in a white lacy dress.) He's my husband now! Grin (I'm not a Snape-wife though, that's a-whole-nother level!) I just love sarcastic gits, clearly.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 13/02/2020 18:15

Oh no @SapphireSeptember I need to google Snape Wife now...I'm going to regret it aren't I?!

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 13/02/2020 18:28

Wow. That was an informative 15 minutes. I just liked the sarcasm and the competence. Feeling extremely rational now!

SapphireSeptember · 13/02/2020 21:45

@Insertdeadcatsnamehere
I'm sorry you had to Google that. I was the same, I felt a bit weird, then I found out about Snape-Wives (I think via a Seamus Gorman video a while back) and suddenly felt entirely normal. Grin Trouble is I now eye up any bloke I see that looks a bit Snape-y and want to ask them out. Blush

I massively fancied Snape, but one of the receptionists at work looks remarkably like him so I sadly had to transfer my love to Lucius Malfoy instead.

BohoBunney · 14/02/2020 07:50

I agree OP. I think it’s either a fandom you’re obsessed with or freaked out by. Join the Disney Cringeposting group on Facebook OP. Your people are waiting Grin

Don't get it myself, same with gaming, football, collecting, fandom etc but then I do suck my thumb to sleep every night and have no intention of ever giving that up.

I am more of a fan than teen DC. However, I don't get carried away (the books and films are enough for me). I do find it amazing that more than two decades since the first book was published, Primark is still full of HP themed products and nightwear. Just who buys it? Oh and Sainsbury's at Christmas had loads of HP merch on sale.

Always think it is a bit weird adults liking children's stuff

BiddyPop · 14/02/2020 09:13

But it’s not just a children’s thing. There. Are multiple levels to enjoy, some of which really can only be understood by adults. I have really enjoyed re-reading the Narnia books as an adult, as I got a whole lot of different and new things from them despite having read them all multiple times as a child/teen.

The same with something like Anne Frank’s Diary - it wasn’t just the words on the page and the imagery of their daily lives, but understanding the fears of adults from what they said and didn’t say.

I know I also read a number of adult books as a child where I understood the plot, but lots of nuances went straight over my head. But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy them, even though they weren’t “for my age”.

Sometimes, even as adults, we need some escapism from our daily lives and the seriousness we all face.

Sometimes we just want to dream.

Sometimes we want to go back in our minds to our own youth, not about the story.

Sometimes it’s about the look and feel of something (teen DD loves HP pjs from primary as they are the flannel ones that she likes the feel of rather than fleece - nothing to do with HP).

What harm does it do to allow adults enjoy things they actually like, or is that only something we can allow DCs to do and adults must always be serious and respectable?

@BahMooQuack

Grin Lucius is pretty hot too, I reckon he's filthy in the bedroom (or maybe I've read too much fan-fic... Blush ) The drummer in my favourite band bears a striking resemblance to Lucius in the last two films, when he's looking a little the worse for wear. (Still hot though, as is Will. Grin )

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

I do! I buy all sorts of HP related nonsense and clothing. My favourite item of HP related clothing is the green 'potions' skirt I got from EMP a couple of years ago, I've got a few things from Primark and I've got some PJs I got from Sainsbo's last year. (Also with potions printed all over them. Oh, and I have a Hufflepuff t-shirt I love.I think the most expensive thing I've got is Severus Snape's wand.

This is what it looks like if anyone's interested, I love it. Smile
