To not understand adults who are obsessed with Disney or Harry Potter?

hellosid · 09/02/2020 16:06

At the moment my Facebook seems to be full of Disney and Harry Potter stuff for sale. Shoes, clothes, bags, stationary etc. And full grown adults commenting saying they want it.

Just saw something posted by a bargain page, £11 for a roll of Harry Potter wallpaper and one of my friends wants to decorate their dining room with it.

Don't get me wrong I loved it all as a child/early teen but I haven't carried the obsession with me into adulthood.

AINU or is it all a bit weird and gimmicky?

As interests go they’re both pretty harmless. Live and let live.

MaidenMotherCrone · 10/02/2020 08:55

How very dare you!

I didn't grow up with the Harry Potter books as I was already very much an adult by then Grin. My children did though and I'm very happy to have assisted with their love of the wizarding world. I'm a bigger fan than they are though Wink.
One bought me the Lego Nightbus for Christmas. Bloody excellent gift.

You are miserable and a bit dull OP! HTH you understand.

rivian · 10/02/2020 14:00

I'm 25 on Thursday and still love Disney. My mum loved Disney as a kid and bought me and my sister up with Disney films, going to Disneyland Paris. As someone who struggles with mental health, Disney is an escape and going on holiday to Disneyland Paris helps me a lot. It's a place of magic, no worries, and childhood dreams. I mean, how can you not get excited about getting to meet a princess? Smile

ghostmous3 · 10/02/2020 14:07

I'm 42 and I read Harry Potter for the first time when I was 25. Didn't know I wasn't supposed to like it as it was for kids. Silly me

londonrach · 10/02/2020 14:12

I dont understand why anyone watch soaps etc but realise everyone likes different things. I love watching documentaries which i know some people woild hate. The disney and harry potty thing is the same. No age limit. My df loves itng train. Yabu

OhDoFluffOffDear · 10/02/2020 14:36

Meh, I'm quite a sentimental person so I think that's why I still carry a torch for Disney/ not so much for HP but I can still watch them fondly.

The old Disney films are what I grew up watching and they remind me of being young again when I watch them. I don't watch the new ones, but the old classics do give me that warm feeling of childhood when I didn't have things to worry about etc... They are just easy and familiar to me.

I know others who aren't sentimental like that and so aren't as bothered when they get older. Everyone is different.

I keep everything though so it's not just films. I have teddies from when I was a kid that I can't bear to throw away still!

SpillTheTea · 10/02/2020 14:41

This may come as a surprise to you OP, but everyone likes different things. I don't understand why some people like watching a football being kicked from one side of a pitch to another for 90 minutes, but I accept others do.

Cyberve · 10/02/2020 14:51

OK @hellosid please provide us with photos of your home to show how clearly perfect and adult it is, plus a list of your hobbies. It's apparently how we are all meant to live our lives. Hmm

Bet you live in some white and grey show home type house don't you? Go running, are a lady that lunches, keeps up to date with love Island.

Not my cup of tea but we don't put you down for how you live your life do we?

FizzyIce · 10/02/2020 15:01

@MaidenMotherCrone I got Lego Hogwarts from my dh a couple of Christmas’ ago Grin
He wants the Upside Down for his birthday

OverthinkingThis · 10/02/2020 15:09

google 'Bronies' OP, they'll blow your mind...

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 15:17

I forgot about Bronies! Grin

motherheroic · 10/02/2020 15:18

It's when they make it a personality trait, that's when it really gets on my nerves.

joffreyscoffees · 10/02/2020 15:20

Well you don't need to understand it?

I don't understand people who cook, or knit or support sports teams.. but I don't give it a second though, I certainly wouldn't start a thread Hmm. Good for them I say.

wonderstuff · 10/02/2020 15:22

There is loads of stuff other people are into that I don't get. I bloody love WDW and will definitely want to go without the kids when they're all grown. I have ADHD and I wonder if that's part of it, I can't do sitting still, Disney is very immersive and gives me a break from my own head, which I don't get often.

harrypotterfan1604 · 10/02/2020 15:29

I bc oh Kent it’s pass this one by since my username makes me one of them strange people.
I love Harry Potter, I grew up reading the books they were a huge part of my childhood. They made them into movies which I also love.
For the record I also am a big Disney fan.
What’s to understand though? I like it some people don’t and that’s that!
I can’t stand soaps, reality tv, British football, golf or cricket but some people do and that’s fine 🤷🏼‍♀️

midwestfornow · 10/02/2020 15:31

I like HP, a bit of Disney, Star Trek, the Witcher etc.
Not seeing how it is any more or less grown up than watching groups of men/women mess around with balls?
DH has a very senior job, I work in the field of child sex abuse, we are both perfectly grown up. We will also be taking our dc to comic con next month.
Live and let live.

BahMooQuack · 12/02/2020 18:47

To be honest i think that being obsessed swith Disney or HP is acutally remarkably healthy. HP in particular is about good triumphing over evil. Abotu truth showing light in a world of darkness. They teach morals, amd values and about how to live according to integrity. I think People who get really into that are actually expressing a longing for a more right and more just world.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 12/02/2020 19:12

@SapphireSeptember I'm 38 and my Severus Snape crush is current and not the slightest bit ridiculous!!

JRUIN · 12/02/2020 19:29

I'm not into any of those things, but it doesn't worry me that other people are. Why does it bother you so much?

ChicChicChicChiclana · 12/02/2020 19:32

Yanbu. I don't understand it either.

Also don't understand adults who are obsessed with Center Parcs.

It's all harmless and I'm not judgey ... just genuinely cannot understand.

Poohpooh · 12/02/2020 19:38

I do still like watching Harry Potter if it's on TV don't get me wrong

Why? You’re not a ‘child/early teen’ anymore.

YABU to assume people are ‘obsessed’ just because they like the movies and a few memorabilia. The same people are not buying ALL the HP paraphernalia you know. Some will like the bags others will like the mugs etc.

CinderellasSecrets · 12/02/2020 20:28

I will happily admit I am slightly massivley obsessed with Harry Potter Grin and have been since I first saw the first film in cinema when I was very young. I don't expect everyone else to understand (although they don't know what they're missing in my humble opinion Wink). It brings me joy so I'll keep up my collection (mainly prop type things that my children know they are not to touch because they are extremely delicate and fragile, not to mention expensive, so most definitely toys). I have lots of HP things around my home, perhaps it does seem a little childlike but I also manage to act like a responsible adult on a day to day basis (I even pass as normal on a good day Wink) so I don't think it's harming anyone lol.

CinderellasSecrets · 12/02/2020 20:29

Most definitely not toys that should say

monkeytennis97 · 12/02/2020 20:30

I don't get it either.

CakeAndGin · 12/02/2020 21:10

I’ve always loved reading but there are a few books that really captured my attention and made me believe. The first was Roald Dhal’s Matilda. I love the book and still love watching the film, it remains one of my favourite books. The other books from Roald Dhal were fantastic at capturing my imagination but not to the same extent as Matilda but I will still happily watch the BFG or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with fond nostalgia. The second book to capture my imagination was Harry Potter. I was 9 when the first book came out and I grew up with Harry. Nothing since then has captured my imagination in the same way. No TV series or book series has managed to completely transport me to another reality. There is a touch of nostalgia with revisiting a Harry Potter. However, what I love about Harry Potter is the different levels it is aimed at. Reading as a pre-teen and teenager is about a child of similar age, dealing with a class bully, a horrible teacher, falling in love for the first time whilst having a bit of drama. Reading as an adult, you can see the racism against mudbloods, you can see how a government can be corrupt, how power can rise and do harm. I think the books/films works on many levels and I think that is why the series is so successful with generations older than me, those who didn’t grow up with the books.

For Disney, I like some films, particularly some of the later ones. Again, I think these work on multiple levels for children and adults. However, there is also something nice about having a hard week at work and watching a Disney film, something you don’t have to think too much about and something that fills you with nostalgia for simpler times. That might not appeal to you. My mum’s unwind activity is to knit and sew. She will happily watch sewing programmes. She doesn’t get Harry Potter but I don’t get her sewing thing. It doesn’t make either of us wrong. You’re just being judgmental for no valid reason.
