To not understand adults who are obsessed with Disney or Harry Potter?

hellosid · 09/02/2020 16:06

At the moment my Facebook seems to be full of Disney and Harry Potter stuff for sale. Shoes, clothes, bags, stationary etc. And full grown adults commenting saying they want it.

Just saw something posted by a bargain page, £11 for a roll of Harry Potter wallpaper and one of my friends wants to decorate their dining room with it.

Don't get me wrong I loved it all as a child/early teen but I haven't carried the obsession with me into adulthood.

AINU or is it all a bit weird and gimmicky?

I don’t understand the love of those wicker/twig hearts people hang in their windows... or wall decals... but 85% Of my neighbours do. I’d rather have a niffler money box Smile

SapphireSeptember · 09/02/2020 17:10

@SchadenfreudePersonified

Fantastic! I have a whole menagerie of Pusheen stuffed toys, as well as lots of other things. Grin I might be 31 but I care not one whit what others think of me.

icansmellburningleaves · 09/02/2020 17:10

Couldn’t agree more. My son’s 30 year old girlfriend is obsessed with Disney. She comes across as very immature. That said it wouldn’t do for us all to be the same.

lovepickledlimes · 09/02/2020 17:11

Guilty of liking both Harry Potter and Disney and got plenty of merchandises though I tend to go for rarer items etc. I also love to still play computer games. For me it is an escape and a bit of fun from what is a rather depressing world these days and one of the few small things that other then fiancé brings me joy.

Shinycat · 09/02/2020 17:12

@hellosid

ODFOD. Hmm

It's your type who make my brother, and my BFF's husband feel like shit because they like sci fi and fantasy, and are 'weirdos' and 'freaks,' because they don't like football and golf. Mocking and goading because they like Cosplay and Comic Con gatherings.

Why and HOW does it affect YOU what people do or like. Mind your own business. Hmm

lovepickledlimes · 09/02/2020 17:13

@SistersOfPercy if you visit magic kingdom make sure to get a peter pan float if you like citrusy things

sageandroses · 09/02/2020 17:14

I don't understand adults who have 'live laugh love' (or similar) signs plastered all over their houses but guess what? I mind my own business and don't start snidely judgemental threads about it!

It doesn't remotely affect you so forget about it.

Shinycat · 09/02/2020 17:14

@icansmellburningleaves

My son’s 30 year old girlfriend is obsessed with Disney. She comes across as very immature.

What a spectacularly catty and spiteful comment.

Be careful. If push comes to shove, your son will choose her, not you! Wink

ChestyNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 09/02/2020 17:16

@Lyricallie me too but In my stranger things t shirt and Minnie Mouse slippers Grin

Have you been before?

SistersOfPercy · 09/02/2020 17:19

@lovepickledlimes will do! Headed to Anaheim, have been many times before but especially looking forward to this visit and a turkey leg

userabcname · 09/02/2020 17:21

Just let people enjoy things. I like Disney and HP. I dislike any and all sport and "don't get" why anyone would actually enjoy watching fully grown adults kick/bat/whatever the hell else they do to a ball, but what I DO get is that other people are allowed to enjoy it even though I don't. I don't feel the need to look down my nose at or mock them.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 09/02/2020 17:24

OP I agree with you. I like Disney films as much as the next person, but I do find it very weird when people continue the obsession in to adulthood.

You aren't going to get a good response from this thread though. Good luck [coffee]

DiegoSaber · 09/02/2020 17:25

Different people like different things. I bet there are plenty of people who "don't understand" your hobbies/decoration choices, OP.

DiegoSaber · 09/02/2020 17:26

You aren't going to get a good response from this thread though. Good luck [coffee]

What's a "good" response?

Surely "Different people like different things" is a pretty good response? It answers OP's question and is factually correct.

bananaskinsnomnom · 09/02/2020 17:31

Sorry OP, another Disney fan over here! (I also like HP but to be honest not as fussed as Disney)

I’ll make some of you recoil in horror- have been to DisneyLand and Disney World, as a child, with young children, and here it comes: as an adult with no children included!

Why does this bother people so much?

Yes I like Disney. I have pieces of Disney merchandise around my home (not wallpaper but still). It makes me happy. It’s nostalgic. Why do people take it to heart? I also happen to love a good roller coaster and rides in general.

And for the PP who commented about being immature, why? just because you perceive it to be a childish concept?

One of my friends loves historic re-enactments and posts photos of herself spending weekends at medieval camp grounds in costume. Another likes comics and goes to comic book exhibitions.
One of my friends is obsessed with horses, spends all her free time with her horse, and her priority for a good holiday is making sure she can horse ride! We are all different. None of this hurts anyone. I hate horses, I don’t need to understand why she loves them, she’s not making me go with her!

I’ve been laughed at for going on holiday to Disney by people who’s key priority on holiday is to get pissed. That’s fine, their choice. Ide rather not spend my whole holiday downing cheap vodka and drinking during the day to try and stop being hungover, but they love it.

Each to their own 😀

BettysLeftTentacle · 09/02/2020 17:32

I don’t get the obsession with Game of Thrones. It’s boring and gratuitous.
I don’t understand why people (mostly women my age) are infatuated with marathons and pro run.
I don’t get why anybody would want to dress in Lycra (men my age) put a funny shaped helpmeet in and go piss off motorists cycling.
I think Prosecco is pants and this fad for flavoured or poor quality novelty gins is a bore.

But who cares?!

Spied · 09/02/2020 17:32

I'm late 30's.
Love a little bit of magic in my life.
I know my 'house' in HP after doing the quiz and also using the sorting hat. I was over the moon when my HP reveal bath bomb also revealed my true house colour- Slytherin. It must be magic!!
I also love Disney stuff and own many character pjs.

BettysLeftTentacle · 09/02/2020 17:32

Park run not pro run

Luckystar777 · 09/02/2020 17:41

Disney stuff is a bit tacky now.

I wouldn't say the Potter stories are just for little kids, I do like the books.

Luckystar777 · 09/02/2020 17:42

Can't stand Game of Thrones.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 09/02/2020 17:44

feel the same way about running and cucumbers

I was momentarily baffled about why one might run with a cucumber. It sounds like a recipe for an unfortunate impalement.

I like a bit of Potter, but I'm far more into other aspects of fantasy and sci fi. Don't really care if the OP doesn't get it - I suspect I'd find their life dull as ditch water too!

Branleuse · 09/02/2020 17:44

youre so right OP. What the fuck is wrong with them. Studio Ghibli is far better

Bezalelle · 09/02/2020 17:45

I agree.

It's pathetic.

malificent7 · 09/02/2020 17:46

Im going to Harry Potter world soon. Fwiw it's for the dds but i am very excited!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/02/2020 17:46

In shock news, different people have different tastes

YABU

( And I'm neither a Disney or Potterhead)
