One Micro Rice Should Feed Two Adults

One packet of microwave rice, when served as a side to, say, chilli or curry, should serve two adults.

Your votes, please.

Shall I be the first to say YABVU to use micro packs of rice? Grin

CroissantsAtDawn · 06/02/2020 09:30

How big is a packet of microwave rice?

Sorry but I think it depends entirely on the adults.

My weightlifting, martial arts, marathon-running DH eats 100g (pre-cooking) rice as a side. He weighs 71kg.

My portions tend to be half of DH's.

CrowleysBentley · 06/02/2020 09:32

I don't really use microwave rice, but one pack would not be enough for 2 adults here. I would split 2 packs between the 3 of us.

ringletsandtwiglets · 06/02/2020 09:32

But micro-rice is soooo easy... I empty the packet into a pan with a splosh of soy sauce so it steams as it heats up, rather than microwave it.

I think noticing the 'two servings per pack' was the first indication that my typical idea of servings was way too big. Now, I don't eat rice, so Mr Twiglets gets the whole pack to himself.

So... YAB a bit U, but I understand where you're coming from Grin

Emmacb82 · 06/02/2020 09:33

We must be really greedy then because if we have it with curry or sweet and sour we have a packet each, although to be fair we the majority of the time it gets shared with a 3 year old too.

reenon · 06/02/2020 09:33

Definitely 1.5 packs for 2 adults

HulksPurplePanties · 06/02/2020 09:34

It should actually feed 6 with some left over for the family dog. This is why there's an obesity crisis.

Supertrooper98 · 06/02/2020 09:34

Microwave rice is disgusting. I'd imagine it's one per person though

BigSandyBalls2015 · 06/02/2020 09:35

One pack isn’t enough for two but a bit too much for one IMO

Starlight39 · 06/02/2020 09:36

I find 3/4 of one is perfect (awkwardly!) and even my skinny 7 yo DS will eat well over half when he's hungry after school. I guess it depends how much chilli/curry or other sides you have with it though. I'm size 8 and don't have a huge appetite generally. It also depends on how much other stuff you eat during the day so I don't think you can make absolute rules about it. I don't tend to snack between meals so by the time it gets to dinner (7/8 pm) I haven't eaten for potentially 6+ hours.

A pack of microwave rice is 250 g cooked weight.

mantarays · 06/02/2020 09:36

Don’t eat it generally, but half a pack for a main meal would leave me hungry.

formerbabe · 06/02/2020 09:36

One would be too much for me but half would be too little.

I'd give dh a whole one.

When I cook rice I weigh out 125grams dry weight for him.

WorraLiberty · 06/02/2020 09:37

It's almost as though adults have differing appetites, isn't it?

BarbaraofSeville · 06/02/2020 09:37

Like I said on the other thread, it's not intended as the only side. You'd have something bready with curry, or tortillas with chilli, so you'd only want a small portion of rice, to leave room for the other things.

If it's your only side, I agree with the PPs who say that half a pack isn't enough, but a whole one is too much.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/02/2020 09:38

One of quick camping meals is one of the flavoured packs (like the Mexican) with some chicken, peppers and tinned veg, all cooked in one pan. 2 packs is more than enough for 2 adults and 2 children.

blondiebrowneyes · 06/02/2020 09:38

It says so on the packet, but it doesn't. I use two packs between three people...

strawberry2017 · 06/02/2020 09:38

We do one packet each.
We started using it when our 2 year old started trying to get on the kitchen sides- makes it a lot safer then having pans of boiling water.
It's not as bad as I thought actually.

OlaEliza · 06/02/2020 09:40

When eating rice (we don't now) we'd have one each and eat any leftovers later.

theemmadilemma · 06/02/2020 09:40

Yes it's not enough for 2 and too much for one. Two packs between 3 would be perfect.

cultkid · 06/02/2020 09:43

No it feeds one I fucking hate sharing rice

Iwantacookie · 06/02/2020 09:44

1 pack of micro rice only feeds 2 people if your having other sides too. Just half pack of rice with a meal isn't going to fill anyone.

Yokohamajojo · 06/02/2020 09:44

2! I give DH 3/4 and have 1/4 myself

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/02/2020 09:45

TAAT

ClashCityRocker · 06/02/2020 09:48

Ooh for the first time ever I'm actually on the abstimineous (spelling?!) side on one of these threads.

Dh and I share a packet of micro rice.

But then again we only have it with curry and chilli.

And will have a full garlic naan each or half a garlic bread stick each.

So maybe not that abstimineous.

peachgreen · 06/02/2020 09:48

We used the egg fried one with frozen mixed veg, leftover roast chicken and hoi sin sauce stir fried as an easy quick midweek meal. It's lush. Two packets with a mixed salad makes enough for dinner plus lunch for us both the next day.
