Does anyone agree with the continuing claims particularly amongst a lot of celebrities claim that the uk is fundamentally racist particularly in relations to Meghan-Markle.

I think as a country she was welcomed with open arms.

I think the UK is more anti-American in general than racist.

Chuffit · 09/01/2020 00:08

No, I don't think so.

WelliAmNot · 09/01/2020 00:11

The UK is racist, but of course hardly anyone will agree and we are totally wrong for complaining about any racism that we regularly encounter.

Eastie77 · 09/01/2020 00:16

The U.K. is incredibly racist but non White people are not allowed to complain. We should be grateful we are permitted to live here - yes even if we were born here - and criticism of the country is simply a sign that we are unpatriotic, angry, ungrateful etc.

Can we throw entitled into the mix as well? I have honestly never met such an entitled nation! I am British by the way! Well, I'm Scottish. Makes me feel queasy to say British for some reason now

TigerOnATrain · 09/01/2020 00:22

YAWWWWN .....

This is England - not many admit racism, it's sly and 2 faced over here.

If you wanted a proper insight you wouldn't ask on MN, it's known to be a pretty racist & in denial of racism forum so it's hardly the place is it. As you well know.

Pixxie7 · 09/01/2020 01:56

Deeceecherry@ actually I am relatively new to mn and as such don’t know a lot yet.

I have hardly ever encountered anyone I would consider to be racist. I live in a large multicultural city and mix with loads of people from ethnic minorities. I have a carribean family next door to me. They've not experienced any sort of racism.

Maybe it exists in other areas of the country but I don't see it.

I am sure some people are and always will be. The vast majority have other things that interest them.

I actually wanted things to go well for Harry. I watched Harry and Meghan.

I came to the conclusion that they are narcissists who want a ministry of truth. Harry is not the brightest spark, not the most well individual and he is one of these luxury believers who spout hypocritical wokesters

  • full of righteousness - virtue signalling nonsense, that doesn't harm him in his ivory tower and harms others - he is too limited with no insight.
TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 09/01/2020 03:29

There is a huge amount of insidious racism in this country. Huge. In my experience, those that do not suffer from it directly tend to want to bury their heads in the sand and pretend it can't possibly be true. It's easier that way.

I remember a former acquaintance denying that the racist name-calling I was experiencing in the local streets could possibly be an example of racism. And when it was reported to the police they sent round an officer who was ready with loads of reasons this behaviour could be explained away...

I also experienced this on a professional basis where a popular senior manager overtly, during a staff meeting, expressed his racist views. My colleagues were initially shocked, but by the next day, his views had been rationalised by almost all who'd heard them. It certainly helps to be popular and in a position of power.

These two examples don't even begin to address insidious racism which is far harder to prove, but still very much real. I could give A LOT of examples of racism at many levels personally and societally.

It simply amazes me how quick many people are to sweep overt and covert racism they've witnessed or heard about under the carpet, make excuses and rationalise it. And I'm talking about intelligent and good people here.

MM has definitely had a rough ride due to her ethnicity as well as other factors. I'm pleased she has Harry who has stood strongly by her side thus far. While I don't agree with 100% of what they do and say I feel their intentions are good. I hope they remain very happy together.

I know some will disagree, and that's fine. I'm used to it. Generally people like to think whatever they want, and whatever is most convenient, no matter what facts and evidence are placed before them. If any good can come of the treatment of MM I hope at the v least it opens a few more people's eyes to the real experiences of minorities in this country.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 03:40

I disagree that there has been racism against Meghan and I disagree that the UK is racist.
I personally dislike Meghan because she just annoys the shit out of me - she seems to be very controlling to me - reading between the lines. I don't notice her skin colour - objectively, you'd be forgiven for thinking she had a Mediterranean complexion. But if you say you dislike Meghan it's because - racist.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 03:43

It has got to the stage where you can't express a dislike for someone black or brown. If you dislike someone - you're racist.

I'm not saying racism does not exist. It exists as sure as I'm typing here. But I know for me personally that I'm simply not racist - yet I've been accused of being racist for simply stating that you don't like someone who happens to not be white.

NurseButtercup · 09/01/2020 03:46

This Tedtalk by Nova Reid very eloquently explains racism in uk

Pixxie7 · 09/01/2020 04:19

Aragrand@ I agree I don’t like Meghan because I find her very false, it’s nothing to do with race. I didn't like diana for the same reasons.

@AraGrand
"I disagree that there has been racism against Meghan and I disagree that the UK is racist."

And there we have it. Exactly the response I anticipated. Instant dismissal of something off your radar and outside your box. Bravo.
Keep believing what you want to believe. Please do not for one single solitary nano-second consider someone in the world may have experienced things you have not. And do not, heaven forbid, open your mind a teeny tiny crack, to see something from anyone else's view but your own.

You know everything already. 100%.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 04:49

She definitely wears the trousers in the relationship though. That's obvious. Any free time is spent with her Mum. I suppose it's typical of most new Mums - they want their own Mum, not the inlaws. Sadly her MIL is dead - because I think Diana might have been a good support to both of them.

How people can accuse the UK of being racist when Prince Charles - almost the epitome of Britishness - walked her down the aisle, I don't know.

missyoumuch · 09/01/2020 04:50

@AraGrand did you actually use the term “uppity” for MM and then insist you’re nit racist?!

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 04:51

@TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner And there we have it. An attack on me without even reading my full posts. Applause. You've proven my point.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 09/01/2020 04:51

...oh, and saying you don't notice a person's skin colour is utter BS. We all notice.
It stopped trendy to say that about 30 years ago.

Do you not notice people's hair colour? Eye colour?
