Does anyone agree with the continuing claims particularly amongst a lot of celebrities claim that the uk is fundamentally racist particularly in relations to Meghan-Markle.

I think as a country she was welcomed with open arms.

If you say the UK isn’t racist you’re either deliberately obtuse, or colluding in racism yourself.

Thanks NiteWotcha. I presumed HQ started work at 8am - maybe not.

Whatsitthingy · 09/01/2020 08:31

Go and READ what the papers wrote about her from the beginning. The coverage was racially tinged at best, racist at worst.

GreytExpectations · 09/01/2020 08:33

The problem is that white people who have no experience of racism keep saying its not racist, well you wouldn't know, would you?? My eyes roll so much at those "I have a black friend" posts. Also, saying "I don't see colour" is such a bullshit thing to say, you can't strip away BAME people's identity like that.

IamTheAntiChrist · 09/01/2020 08:33

I resent being called a racist

Stop being one then ?

Whatsitthingy · 09/01/2020 08:34

I have black friends and Asian friends and Indian friends and I can tell you now that they FREQUENTLY experience racism in our supposedly liberal city. I’ve seen it myself. And heard it. And they talk about it and that’s just the obvious open stuff, god knows how many job interviews etc they weren’t successful with because of the colour of their skin.

Fallofrain · 09/01/2020 08:34

As a white person (whos gay) i guess my closest experience would be homophobia. Recently theres been the first same sex couple on dancing on ice and i had an odd encounter with one of the many people saying why "its just two men, dont understand the fuss". I tried to explain why it's a postive move for the community and actually a big land mark in the uk. Ignoring the people that said 1/150 couples is definately "too much", I got told by many other commenters that i should"try not to worry what others think and be happy" because afterall "theres an advert with lesbian mums in" and "blades of.glory had two men".

It made me realise they were comenting from a place where they felt all couples were treated the same, and that one advert is definately enough.

We get so caught up in how far we've come that we forget there's still a way to go.

Reading comments on threads about dancing on ice has made me realise that we still have far to go. Theres nothing constituting a hate crime but lots of "doesnt look right for me," "urgh so pc", "why must people make a fuss, if they want to be treated the same", "haha, cant wait to see them do lifts!" and im sure its a similar feeling for others reading comments about megan markle

PeggySuehadababy · 09/01/2020 08:35

A friend of mine was told to "go back to her fucking country" just last week and it's not an isolated case. My FIL, who has been here for 40 years and has a degree from a UK uni, gets told to learn to speak english and that nobody understands his "shit accent". There's racism and it's worse since Brexit.

Regarding Megan being "arrogant" "a madam" "a narcissist" etc.. Ehm, do you know her personally? How the fuck can you say you identify with Kate, who is an upper class white woman, who never worked a single day in her life and went to £40000 a year schools?

Whatsitthingy · 09/01/2020 08:36

I’m white and Irish and even I experience racism in England. Or maybe it’s just Xenophobia??

JacquesHammer · 09/01/2020 08:36

There's racism and it's worse since Brexit

Absolutely. The event that made people decide racism was a legitimate viewpoint that needed to be voiced.

PeggySuehadababy · 09/01/2020 08:36

Oh, and if you don't see colours you need your eyes checked.

Fallofrain · 09/01/2020 08:37

Oh and many of people that have said things i would consider discriminatory have told.me that their son, best friend etc is gay and all of them seem to have been to a gay wedding Hmm. In fact ive heard my friends use me as that cover and as their token gay person i can afirm that yes they are my father or best friend but the statement is still homophobic.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 09/01/2020 08:38

The uk is racist as a country

Within the country you will obviously find people who are openly racist, quietly racist, selectively racist and not racist

Whatsitthingy · 09/01/2020 08:41

AraGrand - if you use racist terms and sound like a racist people will think/ see you are racist. It’s a simple as that.

Whatisthisfuckery · 09/01/2020 08:43

My parents have a lesbian DD and they’re homophobic as fuck, always have been. They insist they aren’t but they most definitely are. Having a child does not mean you aren’t prejudiced towards a group, it just might mean you aren’t prejudiced towards your child. FYI my parents are homophobic towards me and in my presence, even though they don’t think they’re being, so make what you will of that.

I grew up in london, but now live in a 'County'.

Apparently I look Polish. Confused I'm not. Grin

The number of people here who've expressed utter relief at finding out I am actually 'English' is extraordinary. I've never known anything like it.

Then they go all odd again when I tell them I'm not English, but was brought up here, am white, and have aquired the accent.

I grew up in West London in the 70s/80s.

We were bonded together at our Catholic schools by poverty, and being 90% non-English. We were constantly being made to feel like 'others', not English/British, but tolerated.

London university, people from everywhere, bonded together by a common interest.

The UK, especially outside of the big university communities, is very racist.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 08:46

What racist term(s) have I used pray tell?

shash1982 · 09/01/2020 08:50

I believe that there is going to be racism & sexism everywhere, no matter what country you go too but to label a whole country & all it’s inhabitants as racist is wrong.

I live in a diverse town & where I work I can honestly say that as a white woman that I am in the minority.
I have a question, not goady, just an honest question.
I have had racist comments & insults made to me, I have had comments made to my young child whilst walking down the street with them in a buggy from teenagers who have said they are not moving out of the way for a white person & have then proceeded to block the pavement but yet I have never retaliated.
I have had someone nearly drive into my car but they have then called me a white bitch when I’ve asked for their insurance details.
My child has had racist comments made to her at school & told she isn’t liked because they don’t like white people etc.
So all I can see is that racism goes both ways but all I read is that it doesn’t & that I have white privelage on my side, like that excuses any remarks made on my heritage.
To me that doesn’t seem right or equal so how can so many people just label everyone outright when they’ve also been on the receiving end?

SigridTheHaughty · 09/01/2020 08:57

I took the Harvard implicit bias test a few years back and apparently I have a mild bias towards black people. I don't put a lot of weight on it, to be honest, because I know I'm racist. And sexist. And homophobic. And ableist. And prone to all the other cultural biases that exist in the soup of ideas my mind developed within. It's impossible for somebody to grow up in a culture where there are prejudiced ideas around and for those not to have some kind of effect on the way their brains develop. So I pay attention to what my mind is doing and try to notice when something I've thought or said or done has been influenced in some way by these biases. And I don't always succeed, and sometimes I hurt people that way. It's not a very nice thing to admit to oneself, but you kind of have to try, if you want to not be a dick.

I think in the case of racism it can make sense that some whites think it's not much of an issue any more. I guess if your family and friends are mostly white and from the kind of culture where any racism is left subtly unspoken, you won't see any overt racism in your everyday life, and when you hear about it in the media it'll seem like something remote and unreal. And unless you're very close to them, people you know in real life won't tend to talk about the racist incidents they've experienced.
