See link. News just announced.

www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2020/01/08/prince-harry-meghan-step-back-senior-members-royal-family-couple/

It does sound like they might be escaping from the public scrutiny and online abuse.

@ AvaSnowdrop

Totally.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 08/01/2020 22:16

They should definitely pay for their own living expenses, security, etc. if they're no longer fulfilling any royal duties. I presume other celebs pay their own bills and they'll have to do the same.

DuchessofWoke · 08/01/2020 22:17

She’s a classic narcissist.

Alienated from the majority of her own family, now Harry’s alienated from his. She’s extraordinary really. It takes some gumption to pull this off. Titles, wealth, prestige and attention - but total control and answerable to no-one.

And what about Harry you’ll say? I think he’s in love. What Meghan wants...and all that.

MolnMal · 08/01/2020 22:17

Their statement was very vague. What are they actually proposing when they say working towards becoming financially independent? Are they going to get jobs? Are the taxpayers still funding the security they will still need? And a good point has been raised about the £2.3 million we just spent renovating their “cottage”. If they really want to be financially independent perhaps that should be repaid.

It sounds like they’ll be carrying on the same as before to me but doing less work. Until they clarify about their financial independence i assume they will still be funded by us while now avoiding the work senior royals are expected to partake in.

Someone mentioned Harry got millions in inheritance from Diana, you would think he could afford to renovate his own house then.

£20 million was the figure mentioned in inheritance from Diana. If this is the case financial independence is already there and doesn’t need to be worked towards.

What is needed is a clearer statement, that they will not be further funded by the taxpayer and will not be doing royal duties, which I think everyone would find more paletable than this vague statement where we are not sure how much they’re still taking and what they’re giving in return.

malylis · 08/01/2020 22:17

The whole thread shows that majority of mn posters on MM threads live fantasy lives thinkinh stuff up about people they don't know.

Losers.

malylis · 08/01/2020 22:18

Why should the money be repaid for a cottage that doesn't belong to them?

MrsBrentford · 08/01/2020 22:21

I think he’s a bit dim and in love and she married into the RF thinking it would be Disney and she would be adored without understanding the intricate workings of the RF.

I think she’s totally manipulative and is stamping her feet because people don’t like her.

Why fuck off for 6 weeks with a huge fanfare?

Just go and if people ask where you are, then release a statement.

HateIsNotGood · 08/01/2020 22:21

Good for them - don't see any problems with their idea. They want to be 'financially independent' which they are very well positioned to be and translates as not wanting any money from the 'public purse'.

And they want to be free to spend time in the USA which is hardly unusual as that's where Megan is from and is as much part of Archie's heritage as the UK is.

MolnMal · 08/01/2020 22:24

@malyis the cottage was gifted to them by the Queen. What makes you think the taxpayer should pay to renovate a cottage we neither own nor live in? Nor even have working royals living in now.

Baileys4two · 08/01/2020 22:24

Not read the full thread, and never normally click on these kind of threads as I've no interest in them. I actually meant to click the link above but I ended up on here and started reading.

I have a question:

Why have a few pp been mentioning racism on here? What has being American got to do with anything?

Disclaimer: I don't follow the royals at all and I don't really know anything about her, except she was, I think, an American actress (?), so sorry if it's a silly question.

MaButterface · 08/01/2020 22:24

I used to think she was good for him until the wedding. I don't trust someone who only invited her mum, has no real friend, well she dumped all the non famous ones, and only invited celebs. Tells you a lot about a person. And we are still going to pay for these wealthy useless people. They still want us to pay for their security, and don't be fooled, they will still come to shake hands with their patrons and required to be paid for it. i'm happy to be paid £££, £££ to shake a few hands.

AgeLikeWine · 08/01/2020 22:24

First Andrew is sacked by the Queen & Charles. Now Harry & Meghan have sacked themselves. Let’s hope they take the entire monarchy down with them.

Conveniently timed after the taxpayer footed the bill for their wedding, house renovations and birth in a private hospital.

@MolnMal they don't own it though, its part of the crown estate. Its been given to them to use.

malylis · 08/01/2020 22:29

Also Harry could renounce his title, step back from Royalty totally and he would still get protection because he is the son of the heir to the throne.

JeansNTees · 08/01/2020 22:30

The fewer royals I have to pay towards the lavish lifestyles of, the better. Ideally zero but that is probably wishful thinking.

malylis · 08/01/2020 22:30

You don't pay anything towards Harry's lifestyle dear

LaurieMarlow · 08/01/2020 22:32

has no real friend, well she dumped all the non famous ones

This is bollocks. She had lots of non famous friends at the wedding.

Foxes157 · 08/01/2020 22:33

Harry is to William the same as Edward is to Charles. They are brothers to an heir.

Edward has had a more unconventional approach to Royal life and lives a more low key family life with a less conventional wife. His family is a similar dynamic to Harry's.

Why is Harry not allowed the same choice?

Amylox · 08/01/2020 22:35

He's an idiot. This morning there was quite a bit of positive talk about a move to Canada. It was being said they were going to go and live there for an extended period working to represent the Queen and the Commonwealth, strengthening ties between Canada and the RF. Loads of commentators were saying what a great idea and a good solution it was, it would suit their talents, allow them to fulfil their royal roles and also allow them freedom and the internationalism they wanted.

This half in half out idea: they still want public funding but also want to be allowed to personally profit from their positions on the basis of a vague promise they will try not to be at some unspecified point in the future.

They want to keep the platform their position gives them but won't accept the constraints and responsibilities that come with that platform.

I think they're going to be a gonner. I think they will only be offered the option of a clean break.

AvaSnowdrop · 08/01/2020 22:36

I still think it’s a massive scary red flag that she’s alienated her husband from his family. Especially considering she’s already alienated her own family. I do hope the RF will put a stop to this and prevent H&M cheapening the monarchy by flogging stuff under their brand. Maybe the Queen will strip Harry of the Sussex title in order to prevent him abusing it?

DeeZastris · 08/01/2020 22:36

I do think it’s a shame that Harry has seemingly fallen out with his entire family. He was very close to his brother.

Furthermore Harry is wealthy but not mega wealthy. He will struggle to find the lifestyle he is used to. Purely due to circumstances he probably has no idea how much everything costs. He could plough through his £40 million very quickly.

Mummy195 · 08/01/2020 22:36

continue to collaborate

Well that means they are in talks then, not like QE does not know what is going on.
