See link. News just announced.

www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2020/01/08/prince-harry-meghan-step-back-senior-members-royal-family-couple/

It does sound like they might be escaping from the public scrutiny and online abuse.

I think you're right, Greenpolkasot and she may be finding that it's harder work with fewer rewards than she imagined it would be.

Greenpolkadot sorry. ^^

I'm not a royalist by any stretch, but as people, they deserve happiness. Public life will never allow them freedom to live without scrutiny so I think this is the best decision for their family's future. Plus this way, I'm not paying for their lifestyle. Win win !

TheMustressMhor · 08/01/2020 19:39

I wonder why they allowed all that money to be paid for renovating Frogmore House?

SoupDragon · 08/01/2020 19:40

Good for them. The press have been utterly foul towards Meghan.

pallisers · 08/01/2020 19:40

I think royal life isn't all MM thought it would be.

or maybe she genuinely fell in love with him and she never wanted anything to do with royal life. I imagine they took a look at their baby and decided not to enter him into the circus.

MissEliza · 08/01/2020 19:40

I wish they'd made that decision before they got the taxpayer to fund their wedding and their lovely 'cottage'. I'd love to know what working towards financial independence means.

AMillionMugsNoTeabags · 08/01/2020 19:41

Plus this way, I'm not paying for their lifestyle

Except my reading of the statement is that they’re stepping away from senior royal duties immediately but “working towards” being independently wealthy.

Wonder how my work would react if I resigned or even just stepped down to a more junior role but was only “working towards” doing without the salary.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 08/01/2020 19:43

Mmmmm - bet they don't get a bill for the wedding & renovations to "the cottage"

Glad to see the " woke" back of them though 🙄

astralweaks · 08/01/2020 19:44

Greenpolkadot

I think royal life isn't all MM thought it would be.

I rather think there is more than a grain of truth in that. She expected a fairytale.

SilverySurfer · 08/01/2020 19:46

Good for them.

Lofari · 08/01/2020 19:46

I think the press has been harsh on them. But I also think she came in and saw things weren't to her liking and has changed Harry.

TheMustressMhor · 08/01/2020 19:48

How do you think MM has changed PH, Lofari?

OP posts:
slipperywhensparticus · 08/01/2020 19:49

I feel sorry for Meghan she has clearly struggled and if you struggle as a regular person you get a homestart volunteer if your lucky a health visitor being nosy (which makes it worse) she gets abuse from everywhere

I know she has a nanny that wont help her self esteem can you imagine feeling fragile you cant settle your baby and in comes the hired help settles the baby and twinkles off I would be so furious I would cry

I think they are making the right choice but the press will never leave them alone and they will always have palace security

DeathByPuppy · 08/01/2020 19:53

Good for them

Lofari · 08/01/2020 19:58

I think he's just not as close to his family now.
I feel sorry for her don't get me wrong, I think in the eyes of the press she can do nothing right. But at the same time, marrying a Prince in real life would lead to a lot harder life than Disney would have us all believe

Nsky · 08/01/2020 19:58

Seems pretty selfish, we do as we wish, don’t want to be involved, the press arensturally noisy and expect a certain amount of pics etc

Amylox · 08/01/2020 20:02

The statement has a lot of waffle but the significant bit is the stuff about working towards financial independence.

The gist of what they are saying is that they intend to make money which traditionally Royals don't do. They're also not making a firm commitment towards not accessing public funds either. They just make vague mentions they will try not to access them at an undefined point in the future.

They are saying that they want to drop the bits of being royal that they don't like: they want to be able to cash in on their position and don't want to do duties. But the bits they do like: the platform, the titles, the public money, the security, the housing, the influence and cachet.

There's been a lot of chatter lately from anti-Meghan tweeters who said MMs ultimate aim was to monetise their brand, pointing to barely concealed commercial plugs for products and the Sussexes recent decision to register a huge raft of product trademarks. I thought that was an incredibly far fetched idea but it now seems they're right.

She's only done 12 months of very lacklustre royal duties. Many parts of which she spent bemoaning her own personal perceived misfortunes. She's never shown any particular enthusiasm for the UK or its population. And it's not like she seems to have made much of an effort to stick it out, they've only been married 18 months and a lot of that has been maternity leave or holidays.

An ordinary woman in her position would be looking at paying everything back to her employer received during mat leave except for stat mat. I think the taxpayer has a right to feel aggrieved about any continued funding for a couple who aren't doing the full job but are taking up money making opportunities elsewhere.

It's not going to work the way they want it to. It's not clear if this step has been approved by other more senior royals. But the won't last like that. If MM ends up hawking paste copies of the Crown Jewels on QVC and he's doing plugs for Land Rovers they'll have to choose between the two.

They can't have positions they will use for their own personal financial gain whilst refusing to fully carry out the duties of that position.

Supersimkin2 · 08/01/2020 20:02

They'll be back.

TheMustressMhor · 08/01/2020 20:05

I think she'll have another baby within a year. I think she was really unhappy by the comments some people made about her when she was pregnant the last time (cradling her bump incessantly for example).

I know that drove me made. Maybe she wants to have her second baby without the public gaze?

Although that ship sailed a long time ago, to be fair.

Drove me mad ^^

Good for them, no need to be sustaining this ridiculous circus or benefitting from it.
