See link. News just announced.

www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2020/01/08/prince-harry-meghan-step-back-senior-members-royal-family-couple/

It does sound like they might be escaping from the public scrutiny and online abuse.

I agree with all @Amylox says. I wish both H&M well but they can’t cherry pick.

malylis · 09/01/2020 09:52

Not absolute rubbish, the house was in need of renovation and its part of the remit of the Crown to use some of the sovereign grant to maintain parts of the Crown Estate they are responsible for.

ShatnersWig · 09/01/2020 09:53

malylis I work in the industry. Trust me, outside of the US, Meghan Markle was NOT a well-known or popular actress and most people in the business hadn't heard of her.

Suits was NOT a huge ratings winner in the US. For the last four seasons, it wasn't even getting 2 million viewers for first airing of episodes. First season was 4.6 million, second season dropped a million and series 3 - 5 all under 3 million. Judge Judy which is a daytime not an evening show like Suits was gets over 10 million.

I know syndication and networks are different things, before you point it out.

Unlike one poster who says we're unhinged, I don't dislike either of them. I do think the media has a lot to answer for and her family are clearly dysfunctional as hell. I'm not a republican although I do believe in a slimmed down monarchy. But you are either IN the firm or OUT the firm; this really looks like cake and eat it and their statements are confused and conflicted.

If they want to be their own independent people, they need to do a Zara (except for getting banned from driving as she was yesterday for her frequent and excessive speeding).

floatygoat · 09/01/2020 09:54

@NumbDazedSad but he's not out though? They're not intending to be "out" at all.

Wheresthebeach · 09/01/2020 09:55

Considering how wealthy they are, and their ability to make money in the future the phrase 'work towards being financial independent' shows how entitled they are.

They already have enough to be independent if they want, and live a life of unbelievable luxury.

BiBiBirdie · 09/01/2020 10:03

I'm not a fan of the whole set up to be honest, however, I can see why they've made this choice.
When my DD was 6 months old, I left behind the town I grew up in, a lovely house, all my friends and everything I'd ever known to move to a town miles and miles away where I knew only my sister in law vaguely, and it was very different and expensive housing wise.
The reason I did that as reading above I sound mad? The safety and mental well-being of my DD as she got older and of my partner and myself.
We lived in a town where my parents were. I left home after years of emotional abuse from them at 16. They were still finding ways to make my life a misery for years afterwards.
We got to the stage where we couldn't leave he house as they would turn up in town and start shouting abuse. Unfortunately, shit sticks in the small town I'm from, so when my Mother would shout that I was a terrible mum who was on drugs and my partner was all sorts, people would shun us. It was all lies and designed to make us miserable.
I couldn't take it anymore and we got out. I miss my mates even 13 years on from leaving as I don't get to see them as often as I would like. But we've built a quiet life for ourselves and our children (we have since had DS) away from an unhealthy situation and I don't regret it
In the same way, I sympathize with Harry. He has grown up in it, losing his childhood and then his mother. He doesn't want the same for his child, and he knows Meghan has already had a bit of a rough upbringing.
I hope they do well from it. Look at how long Kate waited and now she looks haunted, if you believe what the US press has alleged against William, I feel for her.

OlaEliza · 09/01/2020 10:04

I don't think they should be able to have their cake and eat it.

derxa · 09/01/2020 10:05

It's an utter mess.

Kazzyhoward · 09/01/2020 10:09

I'd have more respect if they really had "left" the royal family. But they want the best of both worlds. Not seen any sign of them relinquishing their royal titles or their taxpayer funded home.

At the end of the day, they've courted the media when it's suited them. You can't have it both ways. Diana suffered the same at her own hands. It wasn't a coincidence that the media were there ready to take photos when she "randomly" dropped into a hospital at night - it was all pre-prepared for the media publicity.

Lots of Royals and slebs manage to keep themselves and family out of the media.

Good riddance, and don't let the door hit you on your bum on your way out!

loveandsparkles · 09/01/2020 10:14

Dognamedspot I still think your views are a bit entitled. We did get to see the baby a few days after it was born. Is it fair on a newborn baby to be subjected to a load of cameras moments after its left the womb where it was safe and secure. I don't think people are thinking of anything other than themselves to get a glimpse of a baby who is not related to them. Ffs my own mum didn't meet my daughter for a week I was ill!

MissKittyBeaudelais · 09/01/2020 10:22

Perhaps, seeing as Harry is SO concerned about mental health issues, he and Meghan will see the humanity in allowing a number of homeless people with mental health issues to move into their state funded home, whilst they’re away for 6 months in North America?

Greenpolkadot · 09/01/2020 10:25

Leostar

Exactly..

LillianGish · 09/01/2020 10:31

Step out of the limelight by all means - do a Princess Anne or a Prince Edward, get involved in worthy, unglamorous charities and stay at home (or take a break in one of the many other royal residences on offer). The Royal Rota is there to control press intrusion - release a few official photos and the rest of the pack will by and large, by unspoken agreement, leave you alone. This not what H and M are proposing - they think the tail can wag the dog which did not end well for Harry's mum who died trying to shake off foreign paparazzi having already shaken off royal security. Wills and Kate have mainly avoided press intrusion by playing the game with limited photo calls - paparazzi problems (topless photos of Kate) have happened abroad, similarly Prince Andrew's peccadilloes have come to light out of the UK. H and M were pretty much left alone on their Canadian Christmas holiday because they had styled it as a much needed break, I think they are naive to expect this will be the case with their proposed transatlantic lifestyle. I feel sorry for Harry - he is a victim of the life he was born into, but so are thousands of other ordinary people born into much worse circumstances and they don't have the option to opt out. I can see why he's doing what he's doing, but he's gone about it in a strange way - another royal (like his uncle) presumably reluctant to take advice from anyone.

astralweaks · 09/01/2020 10:32

Piers Morgan is not someone I usually listen to, far less agree with, but today I concur with his views. Strange times indeed for an ancient monarch and her ailing husband. And for most thinking people.

Yes, what a mess.

astralweaks · 09/01/2020 10:33

It smacks strongly of avarice, delusion, a weak man controlled and a staggering degree of conceit and arrogance.

astralweaks · 09/01/2020 10:34

“It” being the decision of the misguided duo.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 09/01/2020 10:39

Perhaps the trip to Canada House was to collect their residency visa So?

astralweaks · 09/01/2020 10:40

Who cares.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 09/01/2020 10:40

Some utterly disgraceful, hateful comments against them in this thread.

Makes you wonder how some people conduct themselves IRL.

To be honest , it's completely vindicated their decision to step away from the whole circus when a section of the public have the attitude of some posters in here.

LillianGish · 09/01/2020 10:46

it's completely vindicated their decision to step away from the whole circus they are not proposing to step away from it though are they? They've patented their brand and will presumably be seeking publicity for it.

How gross that the Queen makes known that she’s “disappointed” that her grandson’s wife doesn’t want to work for the family business, but not disappointed that her son has been accused of sexually abusing numerous teenage girls.

Indeed.
