See link. News just announced.

www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2020/01/08/prince-harry-meghan-step-back-senior-members-royal-family-couple/

It does sound like they might be escaping from the public scrutiny and online abuse.

I'm wondering if Harry hadn't met MM and made her his partner..would this have beeen an option he would have chosen? Its no secret that she doesn't enjoy some aspects of royal life. Maybe she has had a strong influence in all of this

MincedOath · 09/01/2020 07:36

Vive la fucking republique.

PicsInRed · 09/01/2020 07:37

Expo, wouldn't you say that extramaritally shagging about with your own wife's friend and neighbour is the very height of selfish behaviour? And yet virtually nothing about it in the press ... this side of the Altantic. Our future King. The one who is supposed to be "different".

Curious.

I imagine Harry also got tired of being painted the family screw-up in order to function as his brother's scapegoat and decided that his brother could do his own penance from now on.

That and the racism. Obvs.

SoupDragon · 09/01/2020 07:37

Its no secret that she doesn't enjoy some aspects of royal life.

It's no secret that he doesn't. It's no secret that William doesn't.

But somehow you think it's all down to Meghan?

Lordfrontpaw · 09/01/2020 07:38

They are a newlywed and new parent family.

They went on a lovely holiday (albeit a six week holiday) and came home thinking what we all do ‘if only we could give up work and live there...’.

Will they sail between the two countries to save on air miles?

VivianSmith · 09/01/2020 07:39

Isn’t it fascinating, the range of views on this thread. What I haven’t seen mentioned (but may have missed it) is the extraordinary idea that in doing this, they are going to get less media attention. Surely it’s likely to increase if they aren’t showing up at public events such as trooping the colour etc.

And I also think they are confusing the press attention that Harry is still completely traumatised by wrt his mother, with social media which isn’t under any conglomerate’s control (other than if twitter/facebook etc closed down their platform), and again, won’t stop because they try to do this halfway house thing that’s in their statement but is still totally unclear in terms of how it will work. They could possibly, as Cambridges have done, try to do some deals w the press re how photos are taken and used etc., but the same courtesy will never come from social media as it’s a hive mind.

The statement to me sounds incredibly naive, and as if it’s coming from a very troubled and difficult place. Despite all the help he’s sought, it sounds like Harry’s mental shape is not great, that they aren’t getting, or perhaps listening to, good advice about how to navigate the difficult situation they are in, and that they are alienated and not prepared to work with the Firm that presumably would like to help, but may be doing so in a way that this couple doesn’t like or appreciate, nor is able to access.

I feel bad for them (but not that much given the extraordinary privilege they have along with this media attention), but not entirely sympathetic given their petulant and ill thought-through approach. I can see what they want, I have some sympathy with what they want, but I cannot see how this action gets them what they want.

Expo · 09/01/2020 07:39

@PicsInRed firstly that is not fact. And if it happened then yes of course we should judge him in a similar way. But there is no evidence of it. And I follow an innocent until proven guilty value system. If real evidence of that ever came out he would be annihilated too.

IamTheAntiChrist · 09/01/2020 07:42

It's truly amazing how people on this thread speak about Meghan Markle as if she's their property - "acting like spoilt entitled selfish kids" - how ridiculous.

The British media has never liked her - not white enough, not English enough, not posh enough, not doormat enough, too independent, too feminist, not in thrall to the racism and paedophile-clinging relatives....good luck to them.

I'm not a great royalist although I do have a lot of respect for the Queen. The rest of them though, with the exception of Anne, strike me as a bunch of arses. If I had an Uncle like Andrew, I'd make a point of never associating with him ever again. If I had a racist old grandad who knocks people down in cars and calls Chinese people 'slitty - eyed', I'd do the same.

Expo · 09/01/2020 07:43

@IamTheAntiChrist the British media LOVED her!!!!! EXCEPTwhen they were being hypocritical. You are confusing social media abuse with the press.

LittleBearPad · 09/01/2020 07:44

They’ve treated the Queen very badly. There’s definitely a sense of wanting their cake and eating it too. I think it will backfire.

helpneedshoes · 09/01/2020 07:44

I think the fact so many are blaming Meghan for this is exactly why this happened.

Yes she may be a bit of a luvvie & they said some hypocritical things, which celebrity hasn't? They cannot be less than perfect.

helpneedshoes · 09/01/2020 07:47

I also think the media (for whatever reason) became very divisive, Harry takes private jet, William takes easyjet. I wouldn't want my child brought up in an environment of constant comparison & criticism.

leostar1994 · 09/01/2020 07:48

I think that Meghan didn’t realise that there is a difference between being a Duchess and being a future Queen. I honestly think that she thought that she would be on the same level as Kate with the same respect and adoration from the public.

Obviously Kate has thoroughly adapted herself to Royal life and tradition and people really respect her for that. Meghan didn’t want to and so I don’t know why she thought she would have comparable treatment.

I’m so sad that we are losing Harry. He was always my favourite. In a few years when he realises that his life doesn’t have as much purpose as it once did, he will try and reconcile with his family. I’m hoping that it won’t even take that long.

Expo · 09/01/2020 07:49

@helpneedshoes she is in her 30s. She married into the Royal Family. Of course she is going to be in a goldfish bowl and will be commented on. I can only think she is naive.

LaurieMarlow · 09/01/2020 07:50

the British media LOVED her!!!!! EXCEPTwhen they were being hypocritical.

This might be the dumbest comment I’ve ever read on here. Congratulations.

Expo · 09/01/2020 07:52

@lauriemarlow explain why that comment is ‘dumb’ in your opinion.

LaurieMarlow · 09/01/2020 07:52

I think that Meghan didn’t realise that there is a difference between being a Duchess and being a future Queen

I think that people on here are projecting their own stupidity into her. Ffs.

HairyToity · 09/01/2020 07:53

Perhaps they didn't like being told what to do?

Expo · 09/01/2020 07:53

@lauriemarlow. I think you need to educate yourself in the difference between social media (twitter, Instagram etc) and the traditional press. The traditional press will criticise when criticism is due eg flying to environmental events in private jets. But overall they fawned over the two.

chomalungma · 09/01/2020 07:55

Good for them.

The public obsession over the Royal Family will lead to the end of the Royal Family.

Just like the Truman show.

helpneedshoes · 09/01/2020 07:56

Obviously Kate has thoroughly adapted herself to Royal life and tradition and people really respect her for that. Meghan didn’t want to and so I don’t know why she thought she would have comparable treatment.

I think it's ridiculous that Meghan was supposed to behave like Kate. What are we meant to respect Kate for? Why do K & M have to be the same? Everyone makes mistakes, imagine if Meghan was photographed topless on holiday or her skirt blew up (no shame from me), the outrage would be off the scale.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/01/2020 07:56

If they think the press here is horrible wait until they get over there under the gaze of the National Enquirer type mags.

LaurieMarlow · 09/01/2020 07:56

explain why that comment is ‘dumb’ in your opinion.

Such love Hmm

LaurieMarlow · 09/01/2020 07:57

Lol, Expo quit before you embarrass yourself even further.

helpneedshoes · 09/01/2020 07:58

Of course she is going to be in a goldfish bowl and will be commented on.

Yeah that's not the same as constant criticism. It's all very sexist & racist.
