See link. News just announced.

www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2020/01/08/prince-harry-meghan-step-back-senior-members-royal-family-couple/

It does sound like they might be escaping from the public scrutiny and online abuse.

The problem with a Royal Family that has many hangers-on who are not in the direct line to the throne is that most of them have no function other than to be tabloid-fodder.

If we have to have a Royal Family at all, it should consist only of those in the direct line to the throne and their spouses/dependent children up to the age of 18. I.e. Queen, DofE, Charles, Camilla, William, Catherine, George - and Charlotte and Louis until 18 only.

Harry and Meghan's move (whatever the myriad of underlying reasons may be) was sensible and the remaining Royals need to take a leaf out of their book.

I wish them well though I'm not sure why they have to 'work towards' being financially independent. They could be financially independent straight away if they were prepared to live within their existing means, which would offer a better lifestyle than most of us could ever hope for.

helpneedshoes · 09/01/2020 07:59

The traditional press will criticise when criticism is due eg flying to environmental events in private jets. But overall they fawned over the two

I don't know what you've been reading.

CrunchyCarrot · 09/01/2020 08:00

I've a lot of compassion for the pair of them, I think they're making the right decision, especially for their child's future. It's fortunate they have the money to do it.

It must be incredibly difficult for Meghan to integrate with the Royals and we know how hard it was for Diana (and that will be colouring Harry's view). Frankly I'm appalled at some of the nasty and ignorant remarks I've heard about Meghan, my MIL said 'she's an actress and so she's always acting, and is selfish and wants her own way all the time!'. I said 'how on earth do you know that?' She didn't have an answer of course.

I wish them all the best.

iem0128 · 09/01/2020 08:05

Prince William? Let's put it this way, Mehgan keeps trying to break the internet and wants to hog the media. She forgets that she's not married to the future king. These are the simple etiquette in the rf. William might have a hand in it, but this woman and her family has been nothing but trouble right from the start. All the spats on the internet between her step sister, her father who want to cash in with photos.. If she wants to quit, she should pay for her security. Why do you think Trudeau, Canadian PM, was schtum on this issue! Think about the security it will cost him. A major source of money down the drain. They should just get a job and live as joe public if they want scrutiny. Some reader complained that she/he paid for Archie's crib, she/he is entitled to see a pic of his! LOL! Cakeism is very much alive with this family! The queen has never done anything wrong - look at her children .. the security guards must know what has been going on and the queen must have known a bit and she just goes horse racing and Charles has had only one affairs! Who's kidding!?

IamTheAntiChrist · 09/01/2020 08:06

"The British media LOVED her!!! except when they were being hypocritical!!!"

You sound almost as intelligent as D. Trump there, Expo.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/01/2020 08:06

Their security bill will be massive though. I’m not certain this will work all that well - they are wealthy but not by the standards of their lifestyle (how much to return their ‘cottage’ - could they afford that and the maintenance and staff costs etc x 2?).

Working is dangerous - look at Sarah Fergusson (and she was well liked in the US so wasn’t exactly scrabbling around).

If they earn their money through charities, the charities will get a bashing for paying ££££ for unqualified staff (so not a CEO/CFO).

I suspect Charles will be footing some of the bills but do their receive money from the state?

Not my business at all - but it’s everywhere these days!

And you can’t split your time easily between two continents when you have a school age child.

newyearnewear · 09/01/2020 08:09

I think the whole Royal Family should resign. Not likely to happen! If Harry and Megan resign the state should not give them a penny more and all the security should be paid for out of their own enormous wealth.

MissKittyBeaudelais · 09/01/2020 08:09

And yet... they expect us to pay for their security. It’s ridiculous. They’ve NO idea how ordinary people live and want to “play” at not being Royal. If they want to go to Canada they should be allowed to do so but NOT funded in any way by the British tax payer. All that shit about caring for the homeless and mentally ill. Their security costs could probably go a good way to ending homelessness in the capitol.

Expo · 09/01/2020 08:10

@LaurieMarlow @helpneedshoes overall the press has fawned over them. Overall it has. It’s a typical celebrity double standard. They want the press when it suits them but don’t like it when it reveals things they don’t like being revealed. Like flying on private jets to environmental events. Or reporting that they didn’t want to be photographed at the tennis. It’s tough isnt it. And coming out of a royal tour where they were seeing people truly disadvantaged and then turning the attention back onto ‘poor us’ isn’t endearing.

Tellmetruth4 · 09/01/2020 08:10

Notice how Meghan is getting all of the blame for this move? THIS is why they are leaving. She can never do right. They are human beings and want to be happy so doing what they think is best for their family which is going low contact with Britain.

Brexit has uncovered a very nasty bitter element to our culture. It’s not a good look and it is so depressing here even DH has begun exploring how we can leave.

This is not a friendly or positive country. Maybe it never was but it’s all out in the open now.

Tellmetruth4 · 09/01/2020 08:14

Forgot to add that when I think back to how positive and forward looking the country was during the London olympics was I feel quite sad at how bitter and backwards looking we have become.

All of these attacks on a young family of strangers is a symptom of a bigger problem in our society.

Gemm83 · 09/01/2020 08:15

I completely agree with their decision.. Maybe could have gone about it slightly differently by all accounts but agree with it.
Harry has had a hatred of it all since well before Meghan came on the scene yet all the bile and vitriol is aimed at her.

However, whilst I do support their decision I don't support the "ins and outs" of it. It smacks a bit of.. "well we want some of the perks, but not the work that goes with it"

Therefore if they truly want the life they are aspiring too then I think Frogmore needs to go back. If they want to be financially independent then they can buy their own home. Also they need to relinquish their HRH titles, and revert to Mountbatten-Windsor like Archie. Receive no money from the Crown. I would also say nothing from the Duchy of Cornwall, although a little controversial as it is a private estate I suppose 🤔 Oh and they should pay for their own security, irrespective if they choose to live in a Commonwealth country, such as Canada (seems a bit tidy?! 🤔)

Anyhoo, these are my stipulations!!

Don't want to be a senior Royal, don't get the perks.

Despite all this I only wish the 3 of them the best of luck, and hope they haven't pissed The Queen off too much!!!

slartibarti · 09/01/2020 08:17

I'm surprised the two of them seem to think they can stay as Royals but do what they want.
It's not up to them, the Queen and Prince Charles are unlikely to accept their "half in half out" plans.

leckford · 09/01/2020 08:20

People say they have a bob or two? But money does not go far when you live a luxury lifestyle, private jets, servants and big houses. They won’t be the first to go through what they have got and then return to dad for a handout.

They need look no further than Andrew.

Mummylovesbags · 09/01/2020 08:25

By this time next Summer she’ll be on cover of vogue Usa wearing a Harvey Winston tiara that Oprah gifted her for being “America’s Princess”. Harry and her will travel between Brentwood and NY in their friends private jets & host a gala concert in plaza square attended by the a list to raise funds for invictis. Meghan will be photographed in distressed denim at pumpkin patch at Halloween with Archie and her rescue dogs, just being downtown humble, grunge and LA and woke one week. She’ll write a guest post for GOOP on alternative therapies on week and be sunning herself on a yacht with Beyonce the next week. Harry will be papped at a high class strip joint in NY for Leo Dicaprio’s bachelor party. I can’t wait !!!!!!

Mummylovesbags · 09/01/2020 08:27

The vogue cover will be a profile photo of her in the tiara with just her shilouette because she’s humble. It will resemble the queen on a stamp though.

ChickenNuggetsChipsAndBeans · 09/01/2020 08:27

The fact that Harry did not discuss the matter first with his brother, Dad or Gran feels disloyal. It gave the palace no time to respond.

If they were to step down from public life, to support Harry's mental health I would support that. But they seem to be saying they want to be financially independent royal celebs.

helpneedshoes · 09/01/2020 08:30

I'm happier paying their security over Tony Blair's.

Utterlybutterly8 · 09/01/2020 08:30

If they think the press here is horrible wait until they get over there under the gaze of the National Enquirer type mags.

In her interview on ITV Meghan said they don’t have anything like the tabloid press we have here in America. I think they do, but she just hadn’t been exposed to it as she wasn’t particularly famous then compared to her level of fame now.

Biscuitsdisappear · 09/01/2020 08:30

I'm happy for them to drop out, hopefully they will sort out their own 24 hour security and save the tax payer a bit.

OVienna · 09/01/2020 08:32

The website is mad and seems built by someone outside of Britain. I am sure most people didn't know it even existed or what was on there. I was particularly struck by the section on the Commonwealth and found myself wondering, reading through the list of countries, if any of them were aware they featured in SussexRoyal's plans to "collaborate" with the Queen. These are independent nations that may well have a view on whether they even want to stick around as part of it after the Queen goes, they're not part of some minor royal's "business plan."

I wonder if they would have tried this if Labour had formed the new government. Eventually there will be a Labour government and I doubt very much their multi-jurisdictional lifestyle will be seen as "progressive" then. He will be the son of the King - of course he has to have security arrangements and I bet you what they're proposing won't end up cheaper. Reputational and financial risk all around.

They do seem like loose cannons now. I did wonder about PND. It all seems quite drastic.

Mummylovesbags · 09/01/2020 08:33

Yeh they want to make money and be free to spend it how they want and do whatever the hell they want ! Why be accountable to the British people and public when you have to sit behind Randy Andy in photographs, be hidden on a balcony and watch your sister in law get all the good jewels, tiaras and press. where were the perks ? She didn’t need Frogmore. She had a 1.5 million dollar house in Toronto & she could have married someone with far bigger mansions than that with her connections, beauty and so forth ! At the end of the day she’s afford her in every way.

helpneedshoes · 09/01/2020 08:33

overall the press has fawned over them. Overall it has

No it didn't, some sections were quite excited at the beginning eg more progressive however this does not equal fawning.

IrmaFayLear · 09/01/2020 08:35

It was never going to end well when it hit home that there was a Royal life after the fairytale wedding. Who, when they have hitherto enjoyed a wealthy and independent life, wants to open sports centres in a dreary town in January, or be "told off" for taking multiple flights and going on holiday?

It is a bit surprising how early this stepping back has happened, but not astonishing. Like others, I think the "working towards" financial independence is a cheek. Who else gets paid for not going to work?!

Mummylovesbags · 09/01/2020 08:35

I don’t think PND, I think the pressure and politics behind the scenes would have been enormous and infuriating. Can you imagine being thrown under the bus in the press while the indiscretions or other people are slid under the rug while they play happy families & perfect princesses ?
