See link. News just announced.

www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2020/01/08/prince-harry-meghan-step-back-senior-members-royal-family-couple/

It does sound like they might be escaping from the public scrutiny and online abuse.

Do you know something .I'm not sure how to word this without causing some kind of offence ....which in itself is offensive to me ...I dont notice that she is mixed heritage and couldn't care less that she is mixed heritage until I come on here and see the " you are being racist " comments.
It's pathetic ...
I'm going to go ahead and say that I think it's obvious that William and Harry are estranged and it's such a shame.
Also I so wanted to like her but the way she gushed over Harry at their engagement photo shoot made me cringe.
The none appearance at the Lindo wing was a bad move ...ok is mere mortals might not feel up to it 12 hours after giving birth but it's not as if she had to go home to a cold house, a pile of drudgery and other kids to feed and bath.
Then the refusal to name Godparents - I couldn't care less initially and then I felt irritated on behalf of the people who did care....To some Royalists this is a big deal.
Why make waves when it's unnecessary

Jonb6 · 09/01/2020 01:47

I wonder whether their decision has been more H's than M's. Looking back to before his mother died, the way she was treated, the affair between his father and Camilla, with Diana's children just being expected to put that to one side and welcome her as their father's wife, would surely create a chasm in most families. I suspect he could see the effect the press coverage of Meghan was having on her, and it was vile and disgusting, particularly as she was pregnant.

Expo · 09/01/2020 01:49

This is all going to end badly for Harry

kateandme · 09/01/2020 01:55

you dont think they talked to his dad about this.you dont thik over the weeks theyve been away they didnt have a clue? why is everyone saying oh poor RF They have blindsighted them.is it this way becasue the tabloids say so.
they could have been speaking to them every single day they were away and you or i would have no idea.
harry clearly love his gran i think that has always been very obvious.
can we once again not keep judging and inisting we know what they are doing.that mm a bithc taking harry from his home and they are leaving his family in the lurch.
this kind of shit aimed at them is precisely why they have decided to step away.its disgusting how throughout everyone has been shitting on them and telling them they need to step away from the rf then dont they?they need to not be part of the royals.and they do and they still cant do right

Bobleywobley · 09/01/2020 02:15

People saying every criticism of MM is racist really undermine the real struggle against racism. Are people who criticise Fergie for selling her links to Prince Andrew for money just criticising.her because they are sexist? A lot of the criticism is against both Harry AND Meghan. And he's white. I think it's dangerous to accuse people making valid points as being racist. How is it racist to scrutinise the use of public money? Are people really saying every criticism of Meghan is motivated by racism? Seriously?

TooleyVanDooley · 09/01/2020 02:18

That website basically says they are giving up 5% of the sovereign grant which funds their office (they are also quite sneaky and presented the cost of their office as their only expense) and in return they want to use their royal status to generate personal income for themselves

Yeah, this is what it is all about. It looks like the issue all along has been money, not affairs or race. They can’t do this; they can’t continue within the royal family in any sense and commercialise their lives at the same time. It’s not going to end well for them, which actually I find a bit sad.

Josette77 · 09/01/2020 02:25

I just read the website too. This is about money. Very disappointing.

HDMI · 09/01/2020 02:32

Harry and Meghan are very well suited to Canada, I understand that they are setting up a ministry of truth,. #RoyalWokesters.

HDMI · 09/01/2020 02:33

#RoyalWokestersAndTheirLuxuryBeliefs

GrimDamnFanjo · 09/01/2020 02:39

A large part of me will be very disappointed if this is not a complete nuclear option from Meghan and Harry.

Pixxie7 · 09/01/2020 02:59

In someways it might be playing into Prince Charles vision for a future monarchy. He wants to scale it down.

malificent7 · 09/01/2020 03:11

Bollocks to duty. Why are we all so hung up on royals " doing their job?" The only person who should do their duty is the monarch.
I like Mehan and Harry and im no royalist.

malificent7 · 09/01/2020 03:11

Meghan.

malificent7 · 09/01/2020 03:24

I fail to see why the queen would gave issue with this and even if she foes...who cares quite frankly?
I have no idea why the public have such fixed ideas about what Harry and Meghan should/ shouldn't do when the other royals aren't squeaky clean themselves. They get more hate than Andrew.

Amylox · 09/01/2020 03:26

you dont think they talked to his dad about this.you dont thik over the weeks theyve been away they didnt have a clue? why is everyone saying oh poor RF They have blindsighted them.is it this way becasue the tabloids say so.

No, it's because the royal family say so. It is the official position given to the press by the Queen's office at Buckingham Palace. They did not know.

this kind of shit aimed at them is precisely why they have decided to step away.its disgusting how throughout everyone has been shitting on them and telling them they need to step away from the rf then dont they?they need to not be part of the royals.and they do and they still cant do right

They're not giving up being royals. They're just dictating which bits of being royal they will and won't do and doing it part time. The main thing driving this is that, for giving up the 5% cost of running their office paid by the sovereign fund, they want the right to be able to use their positions to personally enrich themselves and make a profit.

As another poster said, this isn't about their mental health, their privacy, the press or race. It's all about money.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 09/01/2020 03:39

A couple of posters have speculated how things will be in a couple of years when all the hoopla has died down and if they lose their HRH titles.

I wonder how Harry would really cope with not being treated as a royal anymore. People will have treated him as someone special since birth and there's no way he's experienced some of the ordinary, everyday CFery that Mumsnetter's complain about - annoying neighbours; people being rude; sometimes being left out of things ('cos no one would leave a prince out of a social gathering Grin), not getting a job... your everyday disappointments.

It would be a huge shock to have people say "no, I don't want to donate to your charity or give you a job; not to get a meeting with a VIP when requested, etc.

It may not be so extreme, but being ignored in any way will be a massive adjustment. He might love it, or find it really hard.

Intensicle · 09/01/2020 03:44

They could go and live in a bunker in the wilderness and not show their faces for the next 20 years and there would still be people calling her money grabbing and publicity seeking.

blubberball · 09/01/2020 03:46

His uncle's a pedo. No wonder they want to disassociate themselves.

Babynamechangerr · 09/01/2020 03:49

I read their cringe worthy website and it just sounds like they want to keep the bits of being royalty that they like - they're not giving up their title, they're keeping the money-can't-buy refurbished mansion on the grounds of Windsor Castle, they're keeping the income that comes from the privilege of Harry's birth (Duchy of Cornwall), the security paid for by the British taxpayer. So keeping all the nice bits but dropping a mere 5%of their income so they can't do what they want without the obligation of having to do royal duties.

I've lost what little respect I had for them - if they don't want the pressure of being royal then fine, but give up your titles and your palaces, your security. You can still lead the privileged life of a celebrity and support the charities you want free of the Royal family. It's the half in half out I don't support.

I do feel very sorry for the Queen, she's in her 90s, she'll know she doesn't have many years left, and over the last 12 months she'll see the institution she's dedicated her whole life to protect unravelling in front of her, between this and Prince Andrew.

Amylox · 09/01/2020 03:56

So keeping all the nice bits but dropping a mere 5%of their income so they can't do what they want without the obligation of having to do royal duties.

And with the ability to accept payments and generate cash for their own personal gain using their positions.

OrangeLindt · 09/01/2020 03:56

I think the pair of them should be disgusted with the way they have treat her Majesty. Not even having the decency to inform her first. Be glad when they have gone off to live in private, that would be great for Harry, but Megan will miss the spotlight.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 09/01/2020 04:03

I wonder whether they'll be allowed to keep all the "nice bits," though. It seems counter-intuitive, especially if Charles really does want to trim the monarchy. Anyway, we'll find out soon enough.

IAmNotAWitch · 09/01/2020 04:04

I think the moment Harry was dragged in front of a camera while grieving for his mother was the moment this seed was sown.

OrangeLindt · 09/01/2020 04:12

@malylis shut up your racism is disgusting

FromEden · 09/01/2020 04:13

And with the ability to accept payments and generate cash for their own personal gain using their positions

Fergie must be raging that she didnt think of this first
