See link. News just announced.

www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2020/01/08/prince-harry-meghan-step-back-senior-members-royal-family-couple/

It does sound like they might be escaping from the public scrutiny and online abuse.

@paulinespeaksmanylanguages in this world you don't "self identify as black", the world identifies you as such. Your comment seems to assume mixed race people get a choice... they don't really.

There has been racist stuff online and impress regarding MM. I haven't seen any on this thread. People are taking reasonable opinions based on evidence that has been offered. The fact that MM comes off very
poorly doesn't make posters racist.

MrsBrentford · 08/01/2020 23:47

Well - what Meghan wants Meghan gets....

H&M so long and thanks for all the fish. Don’t forget to shut the private jet cabin door on your way out

BubblesBuddy · 08/01/2020 23:50

They cannot and should not do what they want without finalising arrangements with the Queen. It’s not about what they want. It’s about how it works for all of them. The Palace has carefully worded a statement which indicates this move doesn’t have the blessing of the Queen or Charles. It was work in progress.

TatianaLarina · 08/01/2020 23:51

I wonder, if they leave the country, whether the batshit wittering on here about her will actually stop. This thread is properly mad.

What will all the people with shitty lives, who need someone to kick, do then?

darthbreakz · 08/01/2020 23:52

Best of luck to them. Good for them for pursuing happiness.

ItalianinLondon · 08/01/2020 23:54

People were saying crazy stuff about Kate when she was engaged / first married - she was anorexic, attention seeking, etc. But because the Cambridges never really responded and just continued to do their stuff at a distance, I guess they just got bored. It's not nice, but if you don't give people anything to talk about, they will shut up in the end. The ITV thing was a big mistake, IMO, it came across really self-indulgent.

What is funny to think is that, when William was a teenager, BP were so concerned about whether he'd be able to handle the media because he basically wouldn't even lift his head in front of the cameras.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 08/01/2020 23:55

@TatianaLarina

To watch and listen to Harry and Megan welling up with self pitying tears, one would be inclined to think that their lives must be the shittiest lives of all.

Good riddance to them both.

What @ConstanceSalinger said much earlier in the thread about what if MM had written an AIBU, good for them, they’ve had so much abuse and I hope they can now do the humanitarian work that she had to stop before.

MrsBrentford · 08/01/2020 23:58

I am not a racist - my child is mixed heritage.

I do not like what I see of MM, this is confounded today by the way they have treated his own family.

That does not make me a racist.

Ellmau · 09/01/2020 00:02

I think they're being incredibly naïve if they think this will reduce press attention. I think it's going to embolden the press to say nasty things about them.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 09/01/2020 00:02

@joyfullittlehippo

That would be appalling but thankfully, I have never heard anyone refer to Megan as a monkey every five minutes.

Have you....really? If you have, was it said by lots of people or by one sad sack. If you have, you should call the police and if it was on this site, you should still call the police and MUMSNET will be obliged to hand over the offender's details.

OR is it possible that are you just saying this type of inflammatory shit in the hope that it will become accepted fact.

Repeat it often enough and most people will accept it's true-is that your agenda?

malylis · 09/01/2020 00:02

That is fair criticism, however lots of it isn't .

Guacamole · 09/01/2020 00:04

I’m late to this and can’t read the whole thread. But clearly this has been a while in the making. They have a website which states exactly how they see their future roles are going to be.

sussexroyal.com/funding/

Not sure the queen is going to like that.

AgeLikeWine · 09/01/2020 00:06

The BBC’s revelation that the Queen found out about Harry & Meghan quitting by watching TV will be very damaging to them. They have treated the Queen appallingly, and that will go down very badly indeed with the public.

I’m a republican, and even I respect the Queen, so for this pair of narcissistic idiots to behave so disrespectfully way is disgraceful. If they don’t show some humility and contrition over the next few days, public opinion is likely to turn against them and the tabloids will tear them to pieces.

heath48 · 09/01/2020 00:07

Good riddance to them.

hambledon · 09/01/2020 00:08

I am utterly ashamed to be British.

Meghan Markle went overboard to conform to expectations. She spent most of last year performing the duties expected of her AND gave birth. The press were utterly vile about her. It really saddens me because this vileness was simply because she is not white and not British. If you don't believe this is true, examine exactly what it is she has done wrong. Nothing. She did nothing wrong. She's not perfect because she is a human being like you and I ( not a fictional character).

I'm not even a royalist at all. I just think think this country is in the grip of vile bigotry. Two lovely, inoffensive people have been bullied out of their jobs because of bigotry.

The world is laughing at America because they elected Donald Trump and they are laughing at the little Englanders who cannot accept non white foreigners in the upper echelons. Of course people will claim it is nothing to do with her race or nationality and they might even sincerely believe that because open racism is no longer openly socially acceptable. But, what are these concerns about? Why have they become the topic of angry news articles?

  1. Her hair is messy
  2. She doesn't wear tights
  3. She did not want to say where she gave birth or parade herself in public immediately afterwards
  4. She does not have a great relationship with both of her parents

Are these things really terrible? The Queen did not give birth in hospital and parade herself to photographers immediately afterwards. Prince Philip has a very strained relationship with his parents. We all have messy hair days. Can you imagine if these things about you were dissected by millions of people around the world?

fallen121 · 09/01/2020 00:09

Ok, so this is what we DO know.

They announced this on Instagram. There is some evidence in the media that this was done without prior consultation with Her Majesty or the Palace. The Palace have issued a carefully worded statement which isn't exactly overly positive. No-one really knows if they will renounce HRH status, who will pay for their security or what is meant by "Financial Independence". They trademarked the name "Sussex Royal" in 2019. Have I got everything?

This is what I THINK the plan is. To live mainly in the US/Canada as private individuals, possibly starting a charity and possibly trying to leverage the "Sussex Royal" trademark to earn some kind of an income. We know Harry has never worked outside the Services. Meghan did earn good money as an actress, but she is a Mother now and that would be difficult for anyone.

Now some opinion. They WILL attract a lot of criticism for avoiding protocol and not involving the Queen or letting her have some advance notice at least. Whatever your position regarding the Royals, when the Matriarch of the family is the last to know, it always ends badly, whether you are talking the Crown or Peaky Blinders.

Yes, comparisons with Edward and Wallace Simpson will abound due to Wallace being American and universally disliked. But there are SOME similarities. For example not a lot of people know that Edward tried to make overtures to various American companies/Universities/individuals, possibly with the intention of giving himself something to do and earning some dosh. But he was rebuffed at every turn. And the reason? He wasn't Royal anymore.

I THINK there is an intention here to somehow leverage the Royal connection which they feel they can get away with as private individuals. And hope this will earn them some cash. But the fact is, once you renounce your Royal status you are no longer a Royal and no-one really wants an ex Royal because it's a bit sad. Ask Sarah Ferguson, who had to resort to ghost written children's books and being patron of a company promoting weight loss but who has largely vanished into the ether. So that makes it quite difficult to earn wads of cash from trademarking something like "Sussex Royal". I think they will probably make some dosh for charity and Invictus was a good charity and I hope they continue with that. But short of opening supermarkets I don't hold out much hope for their financial future. Maybe they could go on I'm a Celeb. That's always been good for reviving flagging careers.

My advice would be to shove off to the USA, have a few more kids and retire from public life entirely. They are not exactly going to starve.

MrsBrentford · 09/01/2020 00:12

@ Guacamole

Treating the monarchy like a business Shock

eaglejulesk · 09/01/2020 00:13

I'm not going to venture an opinion on this one way or another, however it does irritate me very much that anyone who does say they aren't keen on Meghan is automatically a racist! WTF - are we supposed to believe that someone who is of a different colour can have no faults? No doubt some criticism is based on racism, but a lot of it isn't and people are allowed to have their say without being given a ridiculous label. I've read criticism of Kate - apparently that is ok - but when it's Meghan it must be racist. Grow up.

expat101 · 09/01/2020 00:14

Maybe OTT but what I wish is that more ''charitable works'' have the spotlight shine on their finances, in particular, the expense side of running charitable works and who gets paid what to promote them.

Regardless of who the H & M statement belonged to, independently wealthy/doing charitable works grinds my gears.

The aforementioned Clinton Foundation was one that I was told paid the couple (clintons) very handsomely. Not taking away that famous people can use their influence positively, but so many people give or volunteer without payment at the bottom of an organisation, to be thrown the odd peanut of meeting the famous someone for 5 minutes.

Seems a fine line between helpful and profiting from charitable works in my book.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/01/2020 00:14

I don't care what they do as long as they're quite about it and stop the complaining. They won't though, they'll be on Oprah in no time.

WildChristmas · 09/01/2020 00:15

I read the website.

I am unsure, have they done this in order to make their own money now?

If that is the case, they will need to be careful. It goes on a lot about tax payers and only 5% of their total spending was sovereign money - however royals make money off being royal, and they are royal with our consent and the queens support, and still living in the palaces etc.

Strawberryoranges · 09/01/2020 00:16

@MrsBrentford

Not on topic but having a mixed race child doesn’t stop you being racist. Having a mixed race friend doesn’t stop you being racist. HTH.
