Prince George’s outfit

There’s a new royal portrait featuring the queen & her direct heirs. I know they seem to prefer traditional (to the point of twee) clothes for George, but AIBU to find his outfit odd? The shirt & trousers jar for me

The trousers are lovely, the shirt is lovely - but not together!

They don’t go. The shirt is twee with pastel piping, the trousers are very formal and dark. I also thought his shoes looked a bit scruffy. Weird when so much thought goes into this stuff!

I have had to hunt down formal/wedding outfits for my children loads of times, usually on eBay. Still don’t have them in mismatched weird stuff. Also, we’ve seen that shirt a hundred times now. What’s the obsession?

Prince George should have had a lovely crisp white shirt on with those trousers, and not been weirdly high up.

theWarOnPeace · 04/01/2020 10:19

Arghhh. All the comments about “he can’t wear a tracksuit”. Nobody’s suggesting tracksuit, I don’t think. It’s as I said above, the clothes don’t match and the setup of the photograph etc is strange. Not a case of ‘why didn’t they go to Primark and get him a Fortnite onesie’.

TurduckenFucken · 04/01/2020 10:25

If George is put in such awful clothes then the rest of them should do the same in the name of tradition. I’d like to see the aul doll in a crinoline and the others in pantaloons and wigs.

Or they could go the way of the Sussexes and dress their kids like normal people.

lottiedelavega · 04/01/2020 10:26

@TurduckenFucken the Sussex child isn't future king

Annonymiss123 · 04/01/2020 10:31

or that’s what the Queen gave him for Christmas so the parents felt obliged to dress him in it

😂😂 We’ve all done in to keep “Nana” happy. 😂

Gingerkittykat · 04/01/2020 10:32

He would have looked far nicer in some kind of normal suit, lake his dad and grandad. The trousers look ill fitting and don't go with the shirt.

I noticed it was the same outfits the family had worn to make the Christmas puddings. Looks like another publicity stunt to keep Andrew off the front page.

FenellaMaxwell · 04/01/2020 10:32

It’s for a photo, it’s not how he dresses the rest of the time so who cares? The Cambridges were on the same flight as my DH last year and Prince George was wearing the same H&M sequin dinosaur sweatshirt that almost every small boy I know has. (DH spotted it and mentioned it because our DS has it.)

Allusernamesalreadyused · 04/01/2020 10:32

I think there's some odd rule in royalty land where official photos show kids in those kind of old fashioned twee clothes. It's to do with them looking totally different when they are dressed normally when at home or non official outings. Less obvious who they are or something. I think anyways. He can't help how he's dressed. Kate n Williams kids are gorgeousSmile

BanKittenHeels · 04/01/2020 10:33

I think he looks lovely.

cola2019 · 04/01/2020 10:40

I don't like the shirt but the trousers are ok. A smart dark coloured shirt would have been better. My brother lives in London and walks his dogs in kensington gardens and he has the royal children twice, once George was running about in an England football kit and the other time he saw Charlotte and Kate just before xmas and he would not have known it was them only the security that gave it away- Charlotte had jogging bottoms on!!!!!!

zzzzzzzx · 04/01/2020 10:46

How lucky to be able to photograph 4 generations like that!

Stayingstrong24 · 04/01/2020 10:51

I was more surprised that Prince George appeared to be almost as tall as the Queen. Then I realised he was standing on a step!

recrudescence · 04/01/2020 10:54

Couldn’t someone have run an iron over those trousers? Really.

hotcrossbun4321 · 04/01/2020 10:58

I understand the 'work clothes' thing for the kids, but there's a middle ground between Rupert bear and a tracksuit. Some smart chinos and a shirt and jumper for instance. I think it's a little sad that George keeps being pushed forward recently to show the succession thing - it's a lot of weight for someone so young, and it would create an odd dynamic with his siblings - see Liz and Margo in The Crown or William and Harry. Considering most of us won't be around to see King George, they could let him be normal for a bit longer surely

feelinglost02 · 04/01/2020 11:00

I think the little Peter Pan collar is a bit young for him now but it's not a terrible outfit

diddl · 04/01/2020 11:01

Wasn't it the same day as the pudding pic?

Perhaps the top was to match HM?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 04/01/2020 11:11

Certainly looks like pudding day.

Actually I'm a little disappointed that they haven't released a picture of them sitting round a table eating their own Christmas puddings wearing paper crowns.

In that scenario, though, Prince George might accidentally on purpose drop some pudding on his blouse...

Blackbear19 · 04/01/2020 11:12

But I think Kate is VERY lacking in risk taking and original thought. She is very stuck in doing what those before her did. Giving birth at the Lindo Wing because Diana did, dressing her dc as Diana did even though that was a generation ago

I wonder if its trying to keep Diana's memory alive thing going on. Or following what she did as it seemed to work.
The Lindo Wing probably makes sense, close to home, able to deal with security and the steps are good for the photographers to get pictures.

What I do find weird is Louis' Trooping the Colour outfit was Harry's. Yes he was in his Uncles baby clothes. Who keeps clothes that long?
Makes me wonder how many outfits do the Royals actually keep?Confused

Chickydoo · 04/01/2020 11:19

I had a friend who dressed her boys like this. I think she thought she was upper class (she absolutely is not)
Shoes were Navy buckle, lots of cardigans, tartan trousers & Peter Pan collars on shirts & coats. The boys looked ridiculous. She thought hoodies or tracksuit bottoms on young boys was common.
The world has moved on and this class driven way of dressing is obsolete now and madness. Also the children will hate you for it.
I no longer see the friend, too narrow minded & judgemental for me.

Runmybathforme · 04/01/2020 11:20

It’s a formal photo, I think he looks very smart.

Mlou32 · 04/01/2020 11:24

He looks lovely! I agree, quite mean to sit and insult a child clothing.

diddl · 04/01/2020 11:26

Maybe when the kids were younger they didn't have that many "formal" outfits or wear them that often?

I don't think that it's that odd that they are looked after & put away.

It's not as if there's not the room!

I think that HM, PP, Charles & Anne all have some things that they have worn for years.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/01/2020 11:28

I wonder what is in the Queen's handbag?

I mean - she never carries money, and I can't see her nipping into some random "gender-neutral" lab to touch her lipstick up . . .

I'm guessing:

1- packet of Fisherman's Friends
2- a damp sponge in case one of the grandkids sprains an ankle tripping over a corgi
3- the most recent "Fifty Shades" paperback
4- toothpick
5- foldable sword that can be flipped out for a quick knighthood to execution
6- small wax models of Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, stuck full of pins
7- extra pins
8- half-a-dozen Gordon's Gin miniatures
9- packet of pork scratchings
10- taser

Peregrina · 04/01/2020 11:28

He's the future King FFS, he's not going to wear trackies from Sports Direct.

No, but back in the 1950s and early 1960s Prince Charles and Princess Anne wore the same sort of clothes as most children of the same age did. I know, because I am of the same generations as Princess Anne and had dresses very similar to ones she wore. They weren't going round dressed as though they were children from the 1910s and 1920s. So I think their parents are being a bit stupid making them look so twee.

At least Archie's hat will benefit a good cause.
and Archie's hat could be worn by anyone of thousands of babies and small children up and down the land, without comment.

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 11:28

He looks sweet and suitably dressed.
