DH called me an old soak in the middle of the night

That’s it, really - we’d both been at a party, I sometimes talk in my sleep, so in my head was explaining to ds how to play a game, dh woke up and called me an old soak. I am 48 and probably quite sensitive about my age. We have a visitor so couldn’t sleep anywhere else, cried for a while and then got up and I walked two miles to get my car. Currently sat in a car park feeling sorry for myself. Not feeling the happiest of New Years at all!

@mrsgrindah Oh I see Confused

Strongmummy · 01/01/2020 15:01

@MrsGrindah I think I prefer stringmummy

Brefugee · 01/01/2020 15:47

sorry, what I meant was the whole thing is a drunk overreaction to a perceived drunk slur.
The reason I said "words that rhyme with maggot" was to avoid using the slur (ie. Taggart)
Because it's a drunk slanging match - it just reminded me of the ridiculousness of the song (which I prefer without the slurs on each so I don't sing them) and I suspect or hope that when the pair have got over their hangovers they'll be back to being friends/husband & wife and not fighting about it.

Must work on my delivery - but thanks for bring it up String/Strongmummy.

Somethingelseentirely · 01/01/2020 16:35

Yes thanks, we're fine now. He said basically what you guys said about it just being a phrase, and I know I overreacted and should not have driven even the short distance I did. But shocked at myself - the pp who mentioned perimenopause and alcohol is v close to the truth, I suspect. Thanks for helping me gain a little perspective when I was very upset.

If you were drunk you shouldn't be driving today

AlexaAmbidextra · 01/01/2020 17:37

I know I overreacted and should not have driven even the short distance I did

So you were lying when you said you called a taxi to get you home from the car park? Hmm

paranoidmum2 · 01/01/2020 17:43

Talking in your sleep seems very mild compared to the women who post about their husband's pissing and puking all over the house after a night drinking.

Somethingelseentirely · 01/01/2020 17:50

No, Alexa, I drove about a quarter of a mile from outside the house of the party to the carpark where I started the thread, via a petrol station for coffee. Obviously I shouldn't have.

Zippyx · 01/01/2020 17:58

You can't be that old if you've never been called an old soak!! Wink

theWarOnPeace · 01/01/2020 20:20

So you drove for a quarter of a mile before realising you were in such a bad way that you needed a taxi?

Squigean · 01/01/2020 21:29

No, Alexa, I drove about a quarter of a mile from outside the house of the party to the carpark where I started the thread, via a petrol station for coffee. Obviously I shouldn't have

No, you said you walked to your car in the car park from your house (you had a visitor and you were in bed which leads to the idea you were in your house):

We have a visitor so couldn’t sleep anywhere else, cried for a while and then got up and I walked two miles to get my car. Currently sat in a car park feeling sorry for myself. Not feeling the happiest of New Years at all!

CFlemingSmith · 01/01/2020 21:34

@squigean

Hmmmm hadn’t noticed the inaccuracies!

CatintheFireplace · 01/01/2020 21:36

@Squigean I interpreted it as she slept at home, then walked 2 miles back to the party house where she had left her car, then drove to the carpark. (Obvs she shouldn't have driven either way)

Squigean · 01/01/2020 21:38

Ah yes, that could be it. Otherwise it's a new layer of batshittery

TooManyPaws · 01/01/2020 21:48

It’s like “old lag” isn’t technically a term that means man, but it’s almost always used to describe men.

Mainly because men statistically make up the vast majority of people who spend most of their adult life in prison.

TiddyTid · 01/01/2020 22:34

Perimenopause and alcohol is a bad combination. Your overreaction and subsequent behaviour resonates with me. I've had to reduce my alcohol intake dramatically because of it - I thought I was going mad!

So, cut back. It's better for you anyway Smile

letsghostdance · 01/01/2020 23:20

You drunk driving is far, far worse than him calling you a name when he's half asleep in the middle of the night...

Singlenotsingle · 01/01/2020 23:27

He was probably still half asleep. Maybe even talking in his sleep. Anyway so you're 4 years older than him - so what? I'm 3 years older than my dp. I don't care and neither does be. I call him old sometimes - "old fella, old boy". Women age better than men as well.

Rtruth · 02/01/2020 17:33

So your sleep talking, could be misunderstood for drunk ramblings.

You could be called far worse than a casual drunk.

Liketoshop · 02/01/2020 17:39

Is he 25 years younger otherwise age shouldn't be a sore spot. Maybe you're feeling down or overly sensitive after Christmas and maybe both of you could steer clear of alcohol for a while? It's nothing really unless he's hit a nerve.

manicmij · 02/01/2020 18:06

What do you plan on doing to change the 'old' part ; revert to being 36. You can't change your age. Whilst 48 may be old, it certainly isn't ancient. You were probably a lot more drunk than you think the way you have reacted.

Lincolnfield · 02/01/2020 18:11

Bloody hell! My ‘old man’ - yes I do call him that! Has over the years called me ‘little piss artist’, ‘chubby’ (yes I am) and various other rude names. However, we’ve been married for 47 years, he’s my right hand and my rock and if he called me an old soak I wouldn’t give a toss. I know he adores me.

I think you’re overreacting and probably need to stop drinking so much!

Drabarni · 02/01/2020 18:12

YABU, and 48 is old, but life is what you make it, and you are as young as you feel.
I'm 53 and feel much younger than I did in my twenties and thirties, running home and kids.

Tombliwho · 02/01/2020 18:15

You knew what reaction you would've got if you had included the driving in your OP. That's disgraceful.
