DH called me an old soak in the middle of the night

That’s it, really - we’d both been at a party, I sometimes talk in my sleep, so in my head was explaining to ds how to play a game, dh woke up and called me an old soak. I am 48 and probably quite sensitive about my age. We have a visitor so couldn’t sleep anywhere else, cried for a while and then got up and I walked two miles to get my car. Currently sat in a car park feeling sorry for myself. Not feeling the happiest of New Years at all!

I think he’s having a dog at your drinking rather than at your age. Old soak is just a phrase to mean drunkard. No-one is every called a young soak.

My DH used to ramble a load of nonsense in his sleep when he drank a lot and it got on my nerves. Perhaps you woke your DH up and it’s happened enough times that he’s getting irritated by it. Perhaps as it’s a time for ridding yourself of bad habits you might think
About drinking a bit less in 2020.

user1493413286 · 01/01/2020 07:53

I think you’ve over reacted and you shouldn’t go to your car when you’ve been drinking as you can be arrested for drink driving if you’re sitting in your car with the keys even if you don’t intend on driving

Makinglemonadeoutoflemons · 01/01/2020 07:53

I think you maybe over reacted a CB little, I agree that old & soak go together & don't really attribute to age,
I think probably the alcohol affected your judgement.
It's a New Year, take some time to think of all the wonderful things in your life, celebrate the beautiful scenery- trees birds etc, and when you go home have a snuggle and move forward

Also, I'm sorry after your long walk, but I doubt that you are sober enough/ under the legal limit to drive yet. Confused

AllideasAndNoAction · 01/01/2020 07:53

A dog not a dog!

CFlemingSmith · 01/01/2020 07:54

HUGE overreaction

AllideasAndNoAction · 01/01/2020 07:54

Oh FFS. Dig.

Doggodogington · 01/01/2020 07:55

Wooow, what an over reaction! I don’t think you should be in your car whilst still intoxicated either. Get yourself back home and tucked up in bed.

BelfastNonBlonde · 01/01/2020 07:56

I’m sorry you reacted badly to it OP - it does seem a bit of an overreaction, but you’re
Clearly sensitive about your age / age difference between you.. Maybe that’s where you need to be a bit more rational.

I’ve never heard the phrase Old Soak before but have to admit I love it - and hope to use it in future!

SillyUnMurphy · 01/01/2020 07:57

Why did you walk two miles to get your car when you were drunk only four hours before that? You can’t drive. And yes, you’ve totally overreacted to the ‘old soak’ comment.

MiniGuinness · 01/01/2020 07:57

Oh you are massively overreacting. What is wrong with being old? It isn’t an insult. My DH and I call each other old soaks all the time. We are old (not as old as you mind*) and love a drink.

*That was a joke OP!

BuddhaAtSea · 01/01/2020 07:57

Lovely, get out of the car and walk back home. You’ve had alcohol, you can’t drive safely. Anywhere open for a full English? Go there. Please. It’s not ok for you to drive.

TaxFool · 01/01/2020 07:59

I'd be more concerned about your irrational reaction than what he called you.

If you've been drinking then it's an offence to be in charge of a vehicle, even if you aren't driving it, so I suggest you get out and walk back. I hope you haven't driven Confused

YukoandHiro · 01/01/2020 08:01

Have you heard the term "old soak" before? It just means pisshead or piss artist. It's not anything to do with being old. He was just claiming you were talking in your sleep because you were shitfaced.
Is there a back story as this seems like a phenomenal over reaction

CatintheFireplace · 01/01/2020 08:02

I think you're overreacting (and probably still a bit drunk - not that I'm judging you, we've all be there). Please don't drive!

AlwaysCheddar · 01/01/2020 08:02

Overreaction big time! You were both drunk and irrational.

adaline · 01/01/2020 08:02

Sorry OP but I think you've massively overreacted here.

Your talking probably kept him awake and he was just trying to get you to shut up!

Storming out and walking two miles at 6am sounds very melodramatic.

YukoandHiro · 01/01/2020 08:03

And yes, get out of the car. This thread is making me think you're still drunk. Please go somewhere for a few hours to have coffee and sober up.

muddypuddles12 · 01/01/2020 08:07

This post has to be a joke

Namechanger23455 · 01/01/2020 08:09

You’ll be over the limit, don’t drive. Also if you are in your car operating the radio or lights etc.... and over the limit you can be done for being drunk in charge of an motor vehicle. Be careful op

GaaaaarlicBread · 01/01/2020 08:09

You’re overreacting OP . Maybe you were feeling a bit tired etc so therefor more sensitive . I called my Mum an old fart on her birthday when she turned 49 this year, I joked about her being in the last year of her 40’s etc. Doesn’t mean you’re really old it’s just a silly phrase . My mum just gave me a look and called me a cheeky sod 🤣 just have a laugh about it and enjoy the new year . Don’t get off to a bad start x

Redglitter · 01/01/2020 08:10

Blimey what a total over reaction. As pp said by the sounds of it you shouldn't be anywhere near your car though

thejollyroger · 01/01/2020 08:10

“Old soak” is pretty rude in my opinion. It doesn’t just mean you’re drunk, it means you’re a drunk. And an old one. And it’s gendered. I wouldn’t appreciate it.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 01/01/2020 08:10

Yes a huge (drunken) overreaction.

What ever else you do this morning, do not drive home! A drink driving ban and fine, would be an even worse start to the New Year.

adaline · 01/01/2020 08:12

And yes, whatever you do, get out of your car and don't drive anywhere!

Walk home or call for a taxi. Or at least go and sit in McDonalds and have a coffee first.

Growingboys · 01/01/2020 08:13

Sounds like a huge overreaction to me and makes me wonder if there's more going on.

Are you worried he's cheating on you with someone younger?

My DH called me 'granny' yesterday by mistake (we are staying with in laws) and we both laughed. I didn't storm off and walk for two miles before the sun was up!

I hope you sort it out OP
