To think that Turkeys Voted for Christmas?

NC. This could appear goady but honestly it's a genuine confusion to me.

According to what we are led to believe by the media / some people on MN, "northerners" (as a generic group) voted for Conservatives because they are disadvantaged and fed up with the north south divide among other reasons.

How come disadvantaged Londoners voted Labour? I work in support sector and many people in my care will be in shelters this Christmas, and others rely on food banks. They were saddened and disheartened by Labour's loss and felt the Conservatives in no way represent them. This is on top of the Tory devised hostile environment and Windrush scandal making peoples' lives hell.

I understand that people are / have been pissed off and wanted to have their voices heard. But WHY would the very communities ravaged by the Tories in the 80's vote for them?

Why is it that Corbyn who lives in a very modest way, in Upper Holloway and who went to grammar school is seen as less acceptable than an old Etonian millionaire proven liar? How can Boris Jonson be seen as someone who can help the north south divide or to champion the working class FFS??

I completely accept Corbyn's leadership has been poor and don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan. BUT, given the alternative, I can't understand HOW working class people could vote for Johnson?

AIBU to think the turkeys just voted for Christmas?

You have one vote. All votes are anonymous.

WobblyAllOver · 15/12/2019 13:47

Not another one. When will Labour supporters realise that calling people stupid is not going to make them vote for labour.

Because Corbyn and his cronies were obsessed with their little London echo chamber and made it clear they couldn't give a shiny shit about them and their lives.

The Janice Turner article in the Times is spot on if you would really like to learn.

In my opinion this election was essentially a second referendum. People want Brexit, and the Tories are the only ones who’ve said they’ll deliver it. It’s nothing to do with a new-found love of Tory policies.

You won't get too far with this thread I'm afraid. People that voted Tory tend to get shouted down or won't bother replying because of the abuse they tend to get,
I'd love some people in Sedgefield ( for example) to come on here and explain their vote , but mumsnet seems more labour/ London centric.
The result is what it is. People voted for the ones they thought would implement brexit and turned from Ukip to the tories to achieve this. It's what I think ( for what it's worth)
Plus Corbyn was unelectable even though I voted for him , I knew it was futile!

You are spot on op.
I can only surmise, that people are thick. They believe what they read in the sun or the mirror, or what they see on fb. They think someone with a posh voice knows better than them. They love a bit of tugging the forelock and knowing your betters. They believe whatever they're told.
And don't the tories know it.

People voted Tory because they want brexit
If corbs et al wasn't so bloody minded and listened to what people wanted he would have stood a chance

Maybe labour could have that as their campaign next time. I am sure it will get them just as many votes.

YABU to start another thread about it.

Stop clutching your pearls, join the Labour party and make it something people will vote for. Or stop whingeing. And calling people stupid.

@trewser I am going to read that article, thank you. It really didn't come across to me at all that Corbyn thought he was superior - this is why I'm confused. For me (and disadvantaged people in London) the superior attitude flows freely from people like Priti Patel, Raab, ReesMogg and so on.

I have it on good authority that turkeys definitely voted Labour, especially Norfolk turkeys who in the past had relatives in Bernard Matthews concentration camp.

Btw I'm not supporting the OP's point about north / south as such, but do agree that the unrelatability of the Tories is staggering.

So fucking sick of this bullshit Momentum rhetoric. And you wonder why switched on intelligent people did not vote Labour? Tone fucking deaf.

I'm a north-easterner and, like you OP, am at a loss as to why traditional and staunch labour voters in the area voted Conservative. The very party which decimated the area and continues to ignore it. I live in Scotland now and asked my sister who she voted for and why. She said it felt odd voting Tory, but that it was for Brexit. She think Johnson is 'a good laugh' too. I was so upset. Had I still lived there, I wouldn't have voted at all.

I've always voted Labour previously. Being in Scotland and wanting to stay in the union, I voted tactically (Labour, in our case, but it was with reluctance) to get the incumbent SNP candidate out. I wouldn't have been particularly happy with a Corbyn govt but it would have been preferable to a party which doesnt represent me or my home area at all.

anothernamejeeves · 15/12/2019 14:02

It has been the downfall of the Labour Party branding other votes thick and being so utterly aggressive

Report

WobblyAllOver · 15/12/2019 14:04

I can only think that labour supporters who think this must be happy for their party to keeping losing elections because calling everyone else either selfish, evil or thick isn't going to win people over.

@WobblyAllOver please point out where in my post I said people were stupid? This is the line that gets trotted out all the time which I feel is just said to "shut us up". I am asking what it was about the Etonian millionaire liar which made him seem more representative of working class that a life long campaigner for equality from a much more modest background.

As Corbyn’s London house is knocking a £million, he went to a privileged prep school where the education no doubt helped him get his grammar school place whilst growing up with his parents and brothers in a house called Yew Tree Manor, I don’t think this ‘modest’ man is too much different from ‘an old Etonian millionaire’.
