To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

I love coffee, but not the stuff from those home machines. I have friends with them, and I hate the coffee, it's always a bit flavourless

They taste of marketing bullshit mixed with eye-watering profit margin.

nokidshere · 13/12/2019 22:52

I only like instant so it would be fine for me. As for my guests, if they didn't want what I had that would be fine, they could have tea or something cold instead.

victoriashleigh · 13/12/2019 22:52

I wouldn’t dream of being rude about it but I’d just pass. No big deal!

lotusbell · 13/12/2019 22:54

I prefer it hahaha! Tell her to stick her cafetiere up her snobby arse!

drivingtofrance · 13/12/2019 23:02

I don't drink instant. If I'm visiting someone I will take coffee bags as a compromise.

I hate milk - black insrsnht5is quite different to a mug of the stuff with milk in it.

DM won't drink anything but instant though. So I make sure there's a jar in for her.

KidLorneRoll · 13/12/2019 23:07
  1. Any friend that judges you by your coffee is a dick.
  2. That said, Nespresso coffee is no better than instant and is horrible for the environment. Get an aeropress and start drinking the good stuff.
Birthdaycakemondays · 13/12/2019 23:10

I actually prefer instant coffee Blush

Etinox · 13/12/2019 23:10

Your friend is a dick. Buy an aeropress and a bag of coffee rather than offer instant. But your guests can cope. Don’t worry and enjoy the party.

BarbedBloom · 13/12/2019 23:11

At my house there would only be instant as none of us drink coffee and my mum will only drink instant. We would have tea though, but only have whole milk which is another issue for some guests. Grin

astralweaks · 13/12/2019 23:15

Instant coffee is awful. Prefer my coffee out of a Bodum. The machines are unnecessary and the novelty of them is short lived.

ForkThis · 13/12/2019 23:16

I am absolutely shocked that mumsnet, the place you go to get a bollocking about your lack of concern for the environment, be damned for eternity for how many children you have, taking flights, too much plastic blah blah blah, are all over coffee pods. Shock

I’m pretty shit with my single use plastic, but even I stopped using the pods years ago. I hope none of you coffee snobs ever give anyone a hard time ever again about their flights or plastic water bottles!

Wow!

FWIW, I only drink instant. Has to be either moccona or Nescafé gold though.

Squirrelplay · 13/12/2019 23:20

I have a fancy espresso machine, have trained/worked as a barista, have visited coffee plantations all over the world... and yet I prefer Azera instant Grin honestly I think this is one of those things where people pretend they can't abide instant, because they think it makes them appear oh so cultured and sophisticated Wink

WoodliceInSunderland · 13/12/2019 23:23

Just stick some Baileys in it instead of milk and no one will care!

MyBlueMoonbeam · 13/12/2019 23:39

Coffee snobs are so tiresome
Yes and to refuse instant in someone's home is unutterably rude 🙄

RainingFrogsAndHats · 13/12/2019 23:49

AND it's a kid's b.day party. That is the priority, not the adults, who you cater to just to be polite.

Why are the adults even staying if the kids are 9???

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 13/12/2019 23:52

Cosytoaster

Its nothing about being "a cut above using nespresso" Hmm

I don't like a lot of the blends in their pods. Lots use robusta beans blended with arabica so they taste quite like instant. DH and I were given a machine, within a few months we realised the crap tasting pods cost the same per cup as premium beans from the likes of fortnum & mason.

We swiftly replaced it with an old fashioned basic espresso machine and can now enjoy beans from wherever we like instead of being limited to whatever crap comes in a pod.

YouokHun · 13/12/2019 23:52

Force your friend’s jaws apart and tip tepid Mellow Birds down her throat until she gets over herself.

BearFoxBear · 13/12/2019 23:56

What's with all the up their own arse coffee twats who clearly don't give a shit about the environmental impact of coffee pods? I'm embarrassed for you.

LemonPrism · 13/12/2019 23:57

Just use a French press?

LemonPrism · 13/12/2019 23:57

I'd still drink instant though

alexdgr8 · 14/12/2019 00:08

give each adult a dish of lurid coloured jelly, wibble-wobbling, as they come in, and ask if thy want turquoise or purple slush-puppies.
then sit them down with stern instructions to play together nicely and start pass the parcel.
meanwhile the children can discuss house prices in the kitchen as they sip azera and lament the entitled attitudes of some adults nowadays.

PorpentinaScamander · 14/12/2019 00:13

A group of coffee snobs are part of the reason my anxiety got worse and meant not only did I get anxious about going to other people's houses, but also about people coming to mine. I actually never invite anyone round anymore. Unless I have known them for years.

I used to only have instant in. And after having a chat with a newish group of 'friends' who said they would never drink instant, and if they were served it at someone's house would never go back and would 'drop' them, I stopped inviting friends round. Yes it seems like an extreme reaction, but that's anxiety for you.

Annoyingly I only have cafetiere coffee in at the moment and really fancy a milky coffee to help me sleep. But I need instant to make thatGrin

PlaymobilPirate · 14/12/2019 00:17

I genuinely don't know a single person in real life who would refuse instant!

StillWeRise · 14/12/2019 00:19

er, you don't have to use pods/machines to make proper coffee
(and to the pp pages back, aluminium is far more resource intensive than ordinary tins)
and if people want to use instant, fine but please don't buy a Nestle brand

OneHanded · 14/12/2019 00:19

Instant is awful but then so is nespresso so YABU Grin
