To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

I’d drink whatever you have. Maybe just offer tea for the party or will their be uproar if you don’t have loose leaves?

MsTSwift · 14/12/2019 00:25

Instant is a coffee flavoured drink

MsTSwift · 14/12/2019 00:28

I use biodegradable coffee pods which compost
She was rude to say anything obviously but she’s not wrong instant is not remotely comparable to real coffee

Riverviews · 14/12/2019 00:32

I would not drink it and just have a glass of water. Not big deal

Bellsringring · 14/12/2019 00:32

I don’t think it’s a disaster just tell them ahead that it’s instant so they don’t get a shock.

I’ve accepted the offer of a coffee and I have been shocked and disappointed before. Never said anything though. But if they have said it’s instant then I’m prepared and ok with it.

Fantababy · 14/12/2019 00:34

Instant is a coffee flavoured drink

Coffee is a coffee flavoured drink.

MrsFogi · 14/12/2019 00:37

Your friend is extremely rude.

MsTSwift · 14/12/2019 00:41

Proper coffee is coffee
Instant coffee is a drink that is coffee flavoured. It’s not actually coffee. There’s a place for it but I do get those that drink real coffee not wanting instant it’s not remotely the same. But she was rude to actually say anything to you

HeronLanyon · 14/12/2019 00:47

Use coffee bags. Taylor’s do a good one. They are weak though so you may need two per cup. I use them when travelling. Better than instant !

JaneJeffer · 14/12/2019 01:03

I wonder what the supermarkets do with all those jars of instant seeing as only a few of us admit to drinking it?

Pinkshoelace · 14/12/2019 01:23

And after having a chat with a newish group of 'friends' who said they would never drink instant, and if they were served it at someone's house would never go back and would 'drop' them, I stopped inviting friends round.

@PorpentinaScamander I hope you are able to avoid that bunch now. That's some nasty snobbery. Sorry you went through that and that you struggle with anxiety.

Durgasarrow · 14/12/2019 01:28

Instant coffee is instantly disgusting.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 14/12/2019 01:33

I wonder what the supermarkets do with all those jars of instant seeing as only a few of us admit to drinking it?

Exactly 🙄

TooManyPaws · 14/12/2019 01:57

I use a cafetiere every morning and don't find it a faff at all. I do have a jar of decent Fair Trade instant for emergencies though 😁

Anything from Nestle doesn't get through the front door.

goodluckdontdie · 14/12/2019 02:01

It's pretty gross, but I wouldn't make a fuss about it at someone else's house! Most coffees I get out and about are gross anyway.

Also another voice for the "nespresso is just as bad" chorus.

safariboot · 14/12/2019 02:02

It's a children's party, so I say tough shit if the parents can't have their fancy-pants coffees. The party's not about them.

1forAll74 · 14/12/2019 02:27

Just send texts,to all the party guests, and say,oh, by the way, I only have instant coffee, and have been told that none of you would drink it,, so don't bother to attend, THANK YOU..

DexyMidnight · 14/12/2019 03:38

Sorry this has probably been said x100 already but Nespresso is very poor quality coffee, so if anyone is a coffee connoisseur they'll probably have wrinkled their noses at being offered that too.

If you like it that's all that matters though, and your friend is a moron. People will politely take what they're offered like normal decent human beings. I have literally never gone to anyone's home and left feeling disappointed about the quality of food or drink I was offered.

DexyMidnight · 14/12/2019 03:41

I don’t think it’s a disaster just tell them ahead that it’s instant so they don’t get a shock.

Actually lol-ing at the idea of advance notification of the coffee situation.

WatchingTheMoon · 14/12/2019 03:45

Anyone who cares is a dick. The fact you think they might makes it sound like they're not really great friends.

Is Nespresso even any better than instant anyway? It just sounds like marketing, it's hardly freshly ground partially digested civet coffee, is it?

k1233 · 14/12/2019 03:49

Buy a plunger and some ground coffee - beats nespresso easily, not to mention instant Grin

PhoenixBuchanan · 14/12/2019 04:07

Instant coffee is undrinkable. It bears practically no relation whatsoever to coffee.

Pixxie7 · 14/12/2019 04:24

I must come from another planet, haven’t got an espresso far more important things to worry about. I would say like it lump it.

Blondebakingmumma · 14/12/2019 04:33

Just offer tea and add if they are Desperate for a coffee you have instant because you are waiting for a replacement machine.

Angie6868 · 14/12/2019 05:10

I like instant and honestly can't be bothered with a coffee machine. Prefer tea though.
