To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

Nespresso is not instant. It’s ground coffee beans brewed under pressure albeit not as high a pressure as an espresso machine. The Nespresso pods don’t use plastic at all, only the third party ones do. Instant is freeze dried drip coffee. Obviously it won’t taste like espresso, it tastes like drip coffee which is perfectly acceptable.

Different ways of making coffee will result in different flavours as you get a different mix of flavours and oils come out of the beans. That’s why I have a Nespresso for quick coffee as well as an aeropress, a Bialetti and a cafetière. I don’t have a bean to cup because I prefer different beans to my DH so it would have been a DH only machine. I also have some instant in the cupboard too. Because I’m not a coffee snob and some people prefer it. And as someone else pointed out, why do the supermarkets carry so many different lines of instant coffee if no one buys it?

I’m amazed that people say they can’t taste the difference between Coca-Cola and Pepsi though. Coca-Cola has vanilla flavours and Pepsi has citrus flavours. I prefer Coca-Cola but Pepsi definitely tastes best if you want lemon in it as it complements the flavours already in the drink.

Scarlettpixie · 14/12/2019 14:56

She is a twat. I don’t know anyone with a nespresso machine (or similar)! People would be very rude to complain about a lack of ‘posh’ coffee.

I do have a cafetière but it isn’t really practical for lots of guests.

Evilmorty · 14/12/2019 15:20

Pepsi and Coke are massively different, I also can’t understand how anyone can’t tell the difference either. Pepsi is the superior because it’s a thicker syrup with less carbonatation. I like sweet!

HeronLanyon · 14/12/2019 15:52

I too know no one with a coffee machine - cafetières, filter cones, stove top espresso things (forgotten name of them) seem to do the trick. Machines seems so wasteful of money resources and counter space ! Always thought they seemed a faddish thing ? ?
Good luck op - loads of suggestions here how to get good coffee supplied and/or not to give a toss if anyone thinks instant is a ‘shock’.

MitziK · 14/12/2019 15:54

Having only instant coffee isn't a disaster. Having no coffee at all is, however.

smemorata · 14/12/2019 15:55

I live in Italy and drink "real" coffee (espresso and cappuccinos) at a bar. At home it's always instant!

53rdWay · 14/12/2019 15:58

I’m amazed that people say they can’t taste the difference between Coca-Cola and Pepsi though

They do taste slightly different but most people can't identify which is which. I know you think you can, and I think I can too, but unless we're the exceptions we are probably wrong. daily.jstor.org/the-coca-cola-wars-can-anybody-really-tell-the-difference/

There was a Coca-Cola executive in America a few years ago who offered to do a blind taste test on a radio show to prove he could tell which one was Coke. Got it wrong and lost his job!

I also think instant coffee and real coffee taste different, but I like both of them and wouldn't refuse either if I was a guest in someone's house. Certainly wouldn't complain and/or sneer. How bloody rude.

Evilmorty · 14/12/2019 16:04

I’ve done the test loads of times for a psychology a level experiment we did. Grin they really are very different. Coffee is slightly different really because of an individuals personal taste but instant is completely fine for at home. I don’t even use our nespresso because I forget to buy refills for the thing!

scubadive · 14/12/2019 16:37

Is it Sunday morning or afternoon?

I hate instant coffee, nothing to do with snobbery it’s just not nice to drink.

Can’t you get a cafetière they are not expensive and easier with that number.

HariboLecter · 14/12/2019 16:49

I would rather not drink instant but at least you had a semi decent one in.

WhenWillThereBeGoodNewz · 14/12/2019 17:53

If i didn't like a particular drink I'd just say no thank you and hope they offered an alternative. I wouldn't be Shock about it like your friend

Andysbestadventure · 14/12/2019 18:07

If I offer someone a coffee at home it will be instant. Expensive instant, but still instant.

I just binned off my Nespresso and gave it to a friend. Can't be arsed with the faff anymore.

I've got a stovetop but again, can't be arsed 🤷‍♀️

Coffee flavour water is fine with me 😁

AlliKaneErikson · 14/12/2019 18:11

I’m a big fan of instant, actually (I don’t even care what people think!).

GooodMythicalMorning · 14/12/2019 18:15

Love an instant coffee and as im the only one in the house who drinks coffee it makes sense it's instant. plus its quicker. It is different though. I've never had anyone turn down my coffee for being instant though.

puds11 · 14/12/2019 18:16

Anyone who uses a machine that requires coffee pods needs to reassess. Fucking atrocious for the environment and so unnecessary. Get a cafetière.

Instant coffee is grim irrespective of brand but I wouldn’t be horrified by it. I’d be horrified by the nespresso machine though.

RedLipstickHighHeels · 14/12/2019 18:19

Haha at all the eww instant,No!
My work has an industrial tub of instant coffee, most folk drink instant

lanbro · 14/12/2019 18:21

I own a coffee shop, the most delicious coffee ever...I still drink good quality instant at home and I'm ok🙂

HeronLanyon · 14/12/2019 18:22

I hadn’t had instant for literally decades and had a cup a few months ago. It was good. It wasn’t the same or as good as better coffee but I kind of liked it (May search out a bottle of Camp liquid - anyone else remember that !!)

HavelockVetinari · 14/12/2019 18:23

I love instant coffee, I prefer it to 'proper' coffee. DH is the other way round, so we have a coffee machine and also buy instant. They're different drinks.

MitziK · 14/12/2019 18:49

Instant coffee is fine if you put the water in when it's hot, not boiling.

Proper coffee for the weekend.

Three cups of IKEA's version before wandering round like extras in a live Escher drawing bouncing around going LOOK AT THIS, ISN'T IT COOL in the Marketplace

Black coffee is the drink of a civilised society..

thenightsky · 14/12/2019 18:53

My work has an industrial tub of instant coffee Hahah... is it the official NHS big blue vat of Maxwell House? I know it well.

RedLipstickHighHeels · 14/12/2019 18:58

Yup,the drum of industrial coffee
Skanky cup cupboard

Glitteryone · 14/12/2019 19:23

I can’t drink instant coffee - I’ve tried, can’t do it. Its vile!

However I have no expectations that nespresso will be provided for me at other houses or parties. I simply choose tea or a cold drink instead.

Your friend was being OTT.

DelurkingAJ · 14/12/2019 19:26

I loathe instant but wouldn’t be so rude as to react. I would just ask for tea next time I was at your house!
