To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

I very rarely drink coffee, but if I do, I prefer instant and I am talking gold blend, I don't even like azera. Mind you I have it so nloody weak, that's probably why!

NotMeNoNo · 14/12/2019 21:02

I'm spoiled for instant these days but still drink it at home much of the time. The OPs visitors issue is not coffee but manners.

Waveysnail · 14/12/2019 21:04

I'm not an instant fan but I would politely sip as it as I'm not rude.

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/12/2019 21:07

Love instant coffee.

Can’t stand those coffee machine/cafetière stuff
They are rank.

Swisskit · 14/12/2019 21:09

The instant maybe nice but it's not like proper coffee.

Get a cafetiere, warm it, add 5 dessertspoons of ground coffee. Add water that's gone off the boil. Leave for 5 mins, then swirl the coffee around. Leave for another minute to settle, then press and pour.

And you shouldn't use Nestle products.

cherryblossomgin · 14/12/2019 21:15

I like instant coffee, I don't drink it alot. We have a tassimo but never use it. Classic Necafe reminds me of my grannies house. DH loves his black coffee and used to drink the cheapest instant. I converted him spending more on it. Its not a disaster to me but it depends on your circle of friends.

overnightangel · 14/12/2019 21:40

I’ve never even met anyone with a coffee machine.

RedLipstickHighHeels · 14/12/2019 21:45

It’s quite the thing,it (apparently) renders one incapable of drinking Anything other than proper coffee...as opposed to improper coffee

Ididit2019 · 14/12/2019 21:46

I much prefer instant coffee

lazylinguist · 14/12/2019 21:53

I would be polite and accept the instant. But it's annoying that people are implying that not liking instant coffee is because of snobbishness or caring what people think. I don't give a stuff what people think. But to me instant coffee tastes horrible.

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/12/2019 23:58

My friend has one of those machines. I always take my own coffee with me as i had it once and it was horrible.

I hate having coffee out because they always use a machine with fresh coffee.

drinkygin · 15/12/2019 00:54

Your friend sounds like a stuck up, insufferable twat. Fucking hell. Instant’s fine.

Rafaroo · 15/12/2019 11:10

Hello All - Quick update! Party is in 3 hours and I have gone for the cafetiere option! Also have my instant on hand should anyone not like the 'proper' coffee. Ha! This thread really made me laugh in the end, and actually yes, my friend is a bit twatty. I hadn't noticed before this thread!!

That happened to me once. It was bizarre.

No grounds, did she think we wouldn’t notice?

LaurieMarlow · 15/12/2019 12:10

Good luck with the party OP.

Eyesofemeraldgreen · 15/12/2019 12:13

I drink instant as it's affordable, although I do buy the one in the nice jars (you know the one) so I can reuse the Jars for other stuff.
More of a tea person tbh! Wink

ThanksForAllTheFish · 15/12/2019 12:29

At home I use my proper coffee machine with ground coffee beans. I also froth the milk. I have a decent selection of flavoured syrups too and those little shaker things for chocolate, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon.
We do have a tasaimo still kicking around somewhere but I’m not a fan of the milk they use and find the coffee has a strange taste to it. DH uses it occasionally.

That said for instant coffee I could drink some of the nicer ones if there was nothing else. The millicano or Azera types are ok. Perfectly drinkable.

To me the difference between proper coffee and instant coffee is like coke-a-cola (or pepsi) vs supermarket own brand cola. Some own brands are ok, some taste horrid. You can tell what is the proper stuff and what isn’t but that doesn’t make all the cheaper stuff undrinkable. Perhaps not your first choice but would do if there was nothing else.

overnightangel · 15/12/2019 13:39

If it were me I’d have bought Aldi/Lidl/Tesco/Asda value coffee, said I’d just got hold of this amazing packet of really expensive fair trade dolphin friendly coffee that was ethically and sustainably farmed, gone in the kitchen and made it and served it up and awaited the reaction ... 😈

overnightangel · 15/12/2019 13:47

@LaurieMarlow
“That happened to me once. It was bizarre.

Good lord!! Won’t someone think of the children?!!

I’d love to know the loves all these people who absolutely MUST have the perfect coffee lead. Do you not drink tap water either? Does the water in your coffee have to come from a certain source, as presumably your coffe is 95% water the same as everyone else’s?
If you want to do that in your own home fair enough but the expectancy on other people to provide this is ridiculous.
Choices of drink in my house to visitors:
Tea (tetleys possibly Aldi)
Coffee (nescafe)
Squash (various)
Beer
Wine (red/white)
Council pop
Diet Coke
Covers all bases

goodluckdontdie · 15/12/2019 14:20

What is council pop? Sounds like a new genre of "urban" music!

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/12/2019 14:22

Council pop is water.

BillywigSting · 15/12/2019 17:33

I don't drink water straight from the tap no.

You can smell the chlorine when it comes out of the tap. You can taste it, even if squash is added.

I filter it or boil it and it tastes completely different.

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 15/12/2019 18:16

Azera is my coffee. Dont do machines unless its my cafetière on the odd Saturday i have off football duties.

If she came to my home id not offer her anything.

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 15/12/2019 18:18

Oh and no to drinking tap water from it. Bottle or boiled. Yrs ago i fell ill (along with hundreds others) when cryptosporidium was found in our supply.
