To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

What model do you have good?

evilharpyinapeartree · 17/12/2019 10:32

I use an aeropress most of the time for ease and speed. Sometimes use a stovetop bialetti pot, and I also have a larger one of these for when I need to make several cups for visitors.

Santa is bringing me a Hario V60 carafe (similar to a Chemex, makes pour over coffee) so I can make multiple c

evilharpyinapeartree · 17/12/2019 10:32

Argh. So I can make multiple cups without needing to use the hob.

Gillian1980 · 17/12/2019 10:37

Wow, this has really surprised me!

I absolutely LOVE coffee and I happily drink instant if it’s a decent one. Really cheap instant and Nescafé original I really can’t stomach, but most mid range or above I can enjoy.

My preferential instant for home is Cap Columbie.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 17/12/2019 10:44

I prefer instant to cafetiere (always cold - even in my old dual wall boden) or any of the pod machines (the coffee always seems to taste like paper).

We have a bean to cup with milk frother which is nice (well, if we get nice beans), or in the old days I used a stove top, which always reminded me of my nan making coffee for my dad when we visited, so I liked the whole procedural bit of it.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 17/12/2019 10:57

We have an espresso machine two bialleti stovetops numerous cafetieres and I'm just about to make myself a big old mug of instant.
All slightly different coffees, if people don't like something that's fine but it sounds like your friend is a bitch.
Being disparaging about a friend's hospitality is shallow and rude.
Hopefully no-one else is that mean!

evilharpyinapeartree · 17/12/2019 10:58

Treestump I like the ritual of making coffee too. I find it comforting somehow.

I don’t like the ritual of cleaning out the stovetop pot though. The aeropress is easier.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 17/12/2019 11:04

Hope the party was fun OP and rude friend stayed away!
Did you offer her a drink?

ImnotawitchImyourwife · 17/12/2019 11:08

I wouldn’t drink instant if you offered me it, but I wouldn’t be rude about it. YANBU to offer it if it’s all you’ve got. Don’t bother getting the nespresso machine fixed though. YABU for thinking nespresso is proper coffee. Not much better than instant taste wise and awful for the environment. Get yourself and aeropress and some decent espresso.

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 17/12/2019 11:13

I love a good coffee, if someone only has instant then I’ll just choose a tea or squash. The only thing I (silently) object to is not having the chance to politely turn down instant coffee. But even then I certainly wouldn’t be rude in any circumstances. It’s only a drink at the end of the day. I say that as someone who freshly grinds their own coffee every time.

Lweji · 17/12/2019 11:16

How is squash any better than instant coffee?

Squash is the equivalent of coffee substitutes to fruit.

evilharpyinapeartree · 17/12/2019 11:21

Squash and instant coffee are two entirely different things. Why would you not like squash if you don’t like instant coffee? There’s no correlation.

coffeebliss · 17/12/2019 11:59

OP how did your party go? What did you do in the end?

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 17/12/2019 12:11

How is squash any better than instant coffee?
Just personal preference. Like some people might prefer a herbal tea rather tea with almond milk substitute, whereas others might not light almond milk or even like it!

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 17/12/2019 12:11

might not mind almond milk, that should have said.

goodluckdontdie · 17/12/2019 12:20

What model do you have good?

The brand is De'Longhi... not sure of the model off the top of my head. I actually bought it based on recommendations on a thread on here a couple of years ago!

NotMeNoNo · 17/12/2019 12:52

We do drink instant but our alternative is an Aeropress as it's so easy to clean, just have to shop around to get fine ground coffee.

The Franke bean to cup machine has broken at work which made me realise my dependence on a real coffee at least once in the day.

Lweji · 17/12/2019 14:19

@oncemorewithfeeling99 and @evilharpyinapeartree

Or read the following sentence on my post.

I find it funny when people are so particular about their coffee not being instant and then drink squash (basically syrup and fruit flavours).

LaurieMarlow · 17/12/2019 14:28

I find it funny when people are so particular about their coffee not being instant and then drink squash (basically syrup and fruit flavours).

Why though? They're totally different drinks. I think most people are judging on taste rather than what's in them.

I find
Proper coffee delicious
Instant coffee rank
Squash blah but drinkable

The problem is that we use the word 'coffee' for drinks that taste very different from each other.

evilharpyinapeartree · 17/12/2019 14:44

@Lweji I can read, thanks.

Doesn't make it any clearer why you find it funny. Most people who dislike instant say it's they don't like the taste, not because they are snobs and/or consider it inferior. There's no reason why, if you only drink ground coffee, you should dislike squash. Do you also think that people who only drink ground coffee should refuse oven chips because they're not as good as proper potatoes and have preservatives etc?

Aroundnabout1 · 17/12/2019 23:41

I read that a cafetiere is more unhealthy than say filter coffee... something to do with the oil increasing bad cholesterol as it is not filtered out. Does the aeropress filter out the bad cholesterol? Not sure how it works ...

AleFailTrail · 17/12/2019 23:44

Also it depends on the instant. The general freeze dried stuff I can’t handle but azera/milicano types fill the hole

SerenDippitty · 17/12/2019 23:56

Aren’t an aeropress and a cafetière the same thing?

midnightmisssuki · 18/12/2019 00:04

My husband is a very fussy coffee drinker (will only have bean to cup) - BUT he would never be so rude as to say something like that! When he goes to my parents house, he happily drinks instant as my parents don’t drink coffee. And this is the fussiest coffee drinker i know.

Kab30 · 18/12/2019 00:15

Im a massive coffee drinker and there are some very nice strong instants out there...xx
