To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

@Parker21, anyone that likes coffee and is a regular coffee drinker can definitely tell the difference between instant coffee and fresh. The smells for starters. This morning I woke up delicious smell of fresh coffee being prepared by my DH . There is no way the instant would have the same delicious smell or get me out of bed Wink .

KidLorneRoll · 14/12/2019 10:47

Some instants are ok, there is definately a difference in taste.

However, going to someone's house and refusing coffee whilst proclaiming 'oh no, i don't do instant' makes you a proper dick. Just say 'no thanks, I don't fancy a coffee right now'.

LaurieMarlow · 14/12/2019 10:52

What did all the coffee pod lovers drink before coffee pods were invented?!

Ground coffee I would imagine.

Biscuitsandteaplease · 14/12/2019 10:59

I love good coffee and she is BVU and rude IMO

Because of this reaction, I also bought this filter coffee machine for breakdowns which seems an acceptable alternative to instant to those with this attitude Grin

LlamasSitOnPyjamas · 14/12/2019 11:03

I prefer instant too, I must be a pleb!

Bloomburger · 14/12/2019 11:04

How fucking rude. That's just impolite. I bet you could get a good quality instant and some of your friends wouldn't even have a clue.

I'm that old that I remember when coffee was a treat because it was so expensive and everyone just drunk tea.

((Nescafé gold blend smooth (the powder) with coffeemate in is perhaps the nicest drink in the world. It turns all my coffee snob friends))

k1233 · 14/12/2019 11:04

I'll note a friend of mine who could make the best instant coffee. No idea how she did it. I'd use the same coffee and it would taste like crap. So I use proper coffee, 2 x 7g scoops to one cup (one cup bodum plunger), no milk or sugar. Most people would probably hate it, but for me it's perfect. One guy at work commented it looks like oil...

k1233 · 14/12/2019 11:08

@Nearly47 the guy who sits next to me isn't a coffee drinker, but loves the smell of my coffee. It really is different to instant. Work supplies instant, I bring my own ground coffee. My choice.

Arthritica · 14/12/2019 11:19

I would far rather have water than instant coffee. Don't even like the smell.
In fairness, I'm not a nespresso fan either - I like me a good punchy robusta, strong and bitter (like my soul ;-) )
However, it's rather socially awkward to say yes to a coffee then realise it's instant and request a change. I tend to say "actually, what I really fancy is a cold drink - would it be OK to have a glass of cold water instead?"

zingally · 14/12/2019 11:46

I drink either, and have both in the house. Don't care either way, which one I have. As long as it's hot, wet and caffeinated, I really don't care. Don't know anyone else who cares either. Or certainly wouldn't care enough to kick up a stink in someone else's home.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 14/12/2019 11:56

Isn't nespresso a form of instant?

FruitcakeOfHate · 14/12/2019 11:59

I wouldn't touch instant, Azera or any of it. Instant is rank.

SerenDippitty · 14/12/2019 12:07

I’ve never been impressed with Nespresso coffee whenever I’ve had it. I’d rather a decent instant to that.

LightDrizzle · 14/12/2019 12:16

Another one who doesn’t drink instant but I’d just opt for tea. You’re not a bad host for not offering it but in your shoes I would get a cafetière from Lidl or Aldi and go down that route.

I use and love a Mokka pot in Portugal and a bean to cup machine in the UK. I’ve never tried Nespresso, it looks wasteful.

Linguaphile · 14/12/2019 12:36

Your friend is rude but not wrong. Just get a cafetière from Wilko!

Sugarhouse · 14/12/2019 12:46

God she’s rude. I’m a bit of a coffee snob and not a big fan of instant but I’d drink it with no complaints if that’s what’s on offer and actually instant is all I’d expect when visiting someone. I actually think Azera, Millicano or the Aldi version that i drink are good and I may not even bother to replace my espresso machine and drink that instead as it’s less hassle. I actually don’t think much of the Nespresso/ tassimo coffee I prefer my proper espresso machine and grinding my own beans plus much better for the environment than all those pods

Parker231 · 14/12/2019 12:48

OP - offer your friends what you have - I offer instant if I haven’t the time to grind the beans etc. Friends don’t visit for your coffee - they come to see you. If they don’t see you make the coffee I bet they drink it without knowing what type of coffee it is.

Cecilandsnail · 14/12/2019 13:10

I like noice coffee, black. I'm also partial to instant with a big scoop of coffee mate and 2 sugars! Your friend was rude. If you don't like something you're offered, a 'no thanks you' would suffice! I'd also be testing her going forward by secretly giving her instant every time she comes over!

Evilmorty · 14/12/2019 13:17

Of course you can tell the difference but I prefer a clear counter space, fewer plastic pods, no mess of coffee grounds and the ease of instant in my house. When I am out obvs I’ll buy a lovely proper coffee (Monmouth is my fave) but at home, just for me, who can be bothered. Azera is fine, it’s far from the shittiest instant.

Evilmorty · 14/12/2019 13:20

Plus my pour over takes so long and I can’t do more than 2 cups at once anyway.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 14/12/2019 13:34

You could always try fooling your guests by making coffee machine noises in the kitchen whilst spooning the instant stuff in, like in a very old advert...

SidekickSally · 14/12/2019 13:54

I love a mug of gold blend in the morning but also love an espresso made out of my little Italian coffee pot on the gas stove.

I don’t particularly like cheaper coffee or instant decaf as it is really bitter. Saying that, at work I will often take whatever is on offer and no-one has the time or inclination to fuss over whether it is the finest Colombian beans or whether it’s Tesco’s own.

WhenWillThereBeGoodNewz · 14/12/2019 13:59

Ha ha OutwiththeOutCrowd. I remember that ad. For some reason i remembered it being a man who made the noises. My coffee machine makes those noises as it's an 80s style filter machine with filter paper.

Backinthebox · 14/12/2019 14:02

I feel like I’ve fallen through a wormhole into an alternative dimension!

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 14/12/2019 14:03

I'd also refuse a nespresso as they taste worse than instant.

Bean to cup only for me!
